Most disappointed in Windsor’s game today. After the first few minutes just couldn’t get the ball all day which is a concern. Not on his own of course.

Will be interesting to see if King thinks he would be better served next week working on his deficiencies in the two’s or persisting with the firsts. Thinking he might need some magoos time and have a look at someone else. Maybe Langford in the middle more to see what he’s got there.

Boy we did look slow and sore today, especially TMac and Salem (till injured).

7 disposals 3 tackles for a centre bounce midfielder is a killer. Thats the output for 1 quarter so you're effectively playing with one less player.

I just cant see why is he in there permanently. Even if he breaks free on the end of the chain he is the worst uncontested kick in the team for the last 3 years, which is saying something for a team of below average kicks.

The other issue is he then has to match up on the guns of the competition around the ground. It was disturbing how easy zach merrett lost him in the goal he kicked in the last.

Agree. Windsor’s been doing his role well but had a complete non factor day today. Moved out to the wing which didn’t help. Culley on ball didn’t help Culley either. Hard to say Langford is the answer given he looks half asleep on the wing.

Kolt and Windsor swap but we saw Windsor half back last year and it wasn’t pretty. Kolt’s also doing some really good things down there (mixed in with some very bad)

I like Chandler on ball but he’s vital at half forward.

Not sure what the answer is.

At this early stage.

Out: Salem (inj), Melksham (inj), T-Mac

In: Rivers, Jefferson, Laurie

Hopefully Rivers is fit.

Windsor to the wing, Langford on ball.

JvR to chop out in the ruck.

Out: Tholstrup, McDonald, Salem (injured?), JVR

In: Rivers, AMW, Kentfield, Heath

Really annoying that casey have had such an interrupted start to the year and don't play again this week but i think Xavier Taylor will bring some much needed mongrel and fight to our defensive 6 when he's ready to go.

Kentfield haas to come in for T Mac as fwd/ruck

Petty goes back.

AWM in for Salem

That's for a start. Tempting to drop 5 more but we don't have a lot of cattle.

Windsor is not at on-baller. He's panicky in-close and just hacks the ball forward. Should certainly remain in the team - as a winger. Similarly Lindsay - good player - is not an on-baller (at least not yet). Think they need to bit the bullet with Langford and give him some time in the middle.

Dont think Langford is suited to the wing. Can't take Culley seriously until he does something with his [censored] hair.

I think the unfortunate answer is that we’re short a gun midfielder

We need a genuine accumulator who can win their own ball but still has the speed and skill to spread and impact the scoreboard (is that asking for too much? 😭)

I know King wants to be a low disposal high impact team, but sometimes you just need someone to go in there and get you the pill 30+ times (or at least be smart enough to position themselves to get it that many times)

Reckon we’re at least one more draft and trade period away from a really contending in any meaningful way

Out

I must be selective as we have no replacements, and all of this years crop look a complete bust.

Vanruin, a plank of wood would do a better job, must be put on the market for whatever.

Culley ,VFL player just signed a fat two year contract, not going to make it.

Checkers, a real poor effort, finished as a player.

Melhshan, one Dads army cadet too many..

In, some youthful exuberance, and A.J will keep them looking over their shoulders.

A.J, he’s the man.

These exercises are much more fun after a rousing win. It’s funny how fast we can go from excitement to rabble.

No idea about changes, I’d love to sub out nearly everyone who played today for a total lack of skills and very little heart, but we don’t have that luxury so almost everyone will line up next week for a much tougher assignment, and so a good opportunity to show some pride and earn back some trust.

Out. JVR (omitted) Melksham (managed) Tmcd (managed) Salem (injured)

Ins. Heath. Kentfield. Moniz-Wakefield. Rivers.

ANW Petty Lever

Howes Turner Rivers

Langdon Steele Windsor

Sharp Kentfield Chandler

Latrelle Mihocek Fritsch

Gawn Sparrow Kozzzzy

Int. Langford Kolt Heath Culley Lindsay

Emerg. Henderson Jefferson X.Taylor

It’s a no to Bailey Laurie. Surely he’s bound for the SANFL or VAFA next year.

Yes. Like this lineup and changed

I would say Salem, Windsor, Tmac and JVR need to go. Kentfield, AMW the only ones I can think that come in.

Problem I see with our side now, if we are full of wingers, half forwards, who get sucked into the contest. We struggle to hold our width. Needs some coaching

Some people are able to move on this this thread so quickly. I usually need a few hours to pick myself up off the canvas

Agree

Depending on weather I'd change the balance. One too many talls if not two.

Petty back and TMac rested.

AMW in place of Salem.

No reason to punish Gawn in a losing match. Bring in Heath as back up.

If we can win two quarters next week it's a good result

Seriously... we just gave him a three year contract !!

I think the extra runner in Laurie last week worked better. We had two many medium fwds and not enough pressure. Bill isn't amazing but racked up a few tackles especially when we really got on top of them - he was a part of it.

Culley - needs to stop fixing his hair. Play the damn game son.

I'm not sure if Latrelle is a net positive for the team yet. I know he's very raw and come straight from SANFL reserves but he has some very big deficiencies.

Windsor needs a rocket or new position. Still plays like a kid who's not sure what to do.

We do need X Taylor to come in but unfortunately he doesn't get structures yet. Can't carry that in defence at AFL level (although we did with CJ)

Yeah well we got rid of CLARRY ........... Just sayin!

Turner will probably suspended for his gut punch off the ball in the third quarter.

The AFL are now handing out suspensions rather than fines for those type of incidents.

Well if thats the case deeekhead zorko should be rubbed out for his cheap shot to the niagarras today for 4 weeks!

Probably lost about 5k supporters showing up next Sunday due to today's loss. A potential match of the round to a game of "How much by for Brisbane". I've lost a lot of confidence in this playing group after today. A win against the Lions and Richmond can only atone for it.

Don't need to beat Brisbane. We do, however, need to show the same stuff we did against Gold Coast.

Then regain some confidence before ANZAC eve.

TMac has been a wonderful contributor for Melbourne over the years.

But he was never a greyhound and is starting to look more like a carthorse.

Sadly, I think his time is up.

And I know Max likes to spend almost 100 percent of every game on the field.

But if his ageing body is going to last a full season, and with five spots available on the bench, it surely makes sense to start giving Heath, apparently his anointed successor, some minutes as a backup.

Kentfield or Jefferson surely couldn't be any worse than Van Rooyen has been for the past few weeks.

And in my view AMW has always had more long-term potential than Laurie, who looks like one of the many good VFL players who don't quite have what it takes to bridge the gap to AFL level.

Unfortunately the replacement cupboard at Casey is threadbare, but surely something has to change after a non-performance as dismal as today's.

We are really missing Bowey and Viney.

Perhaps our team thought it was going to be an easy kill against the Bombers. The coach should send a message to the players that there job is not safe. I would drop a minimum of 3 players per game. We have to praising the coach as he is a demi god or what ever. Our moto should be is wait and see before making early comments.

Gawn once again dominated in the ruck yet we lost the plot especially after half time. We have to change the way we play , beating Kozzie usually results in our down fall.

What if the purpose of having Heath an emergency week after week , basically he is robbed of match fitness and experience , I am sure he didn't come to us to become an emergency.Heath and Kentfield needs to come in. JVR , Petty ,Salem and Latrelle should could come under the microscope. Perhaps JVR will become a defender either for Casey or the Dees.

B: Lever, Turner, Howes

HB: Taylor, van Rooyen, Moniz-Wakefield

C: Windsor, Sparrow, Langford

HF: Chandler, Johnson, L.Pickett

F: Fritsch, Mihocek, Jefferson

FOLL: Gawn, Steele, K.Pickett

IC: Lindsay, Tholstrup, Sharp, Melksham, Kentfield

IN: Taylor, Moniz-Wakefield, Johnson, Jefferson, Kentfield

OUT: Salem (inj), McDonald, Petty, Culley, Langdon

We’re a lot more than one draft away.

We’ve got 8 over 30 veterans in the side and maybe one replacement in Bowey for Salem on the list. Perhaps Taylor for Lever in time too. And hopefully one of the young key forwards come in to cover Melk or Mihocek.

And we’ve got a bunch of young guys who clearly have something to offer but they aren’t Tracc, Oliver and Viney either.

We can’t rely on Steele dominating every week or on Sparrow and Windsor to be prime movers. A pure mid would be very handy.

If we don’t want to go too far backwards in years to come we’re going to need to find some quality bargain finds from somewhere. We can’t have Bailey Laurie as the only remotely viable midfielder at Casey.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
