POSTGAME: Rd 05 vs Essendon

Crikey. As i said to bro during the week, "this is our biggest test for the year... we so often drop matches like this coming in as favs".

And sure enough here we are.

[censored] the bed as favs again and made them look like a top 6 contender.

For whatever reason this club is unable to bring a professional 'big' game most weeks and i'm saying this in a cultural/ general sense not looking to put the blame on Kingy as he will need two to three seasons at least.

Just when we appear to take a step or two forward we always manage two or three back and so often its when we're playing a badly out-of-form team. Playing them into what seems like 'great form'.

Soft underbelly remains.

There's a serious trust issue with too many players out there. Some are past their best and some may well be at or near their best but aren't quite up to the challenge at AFL level.

Time will tell and its a long season but alot of air was let outta the balloon today.

We're a rebuilding team, lose games - hopefully our next lost doesn't have the same hallmarks - that's all we can hope for I guess.

Where do we begin;

  • Too flat;

  • Too tall;

  • Let them have too much of the ball;

  • Essendon with 41 clearances, season average for them is 24.8

  • Efficiency inside 50 down, made them look like a team of AA defenders

  • Gave away the pill too often;

  • Obviously injuries to Salem/Melk didn't help,

  • umpiring was almost as bad as we were, i know we were cabbage but momentum killer in the 3rd

Windsor, Culley and sparrow really went missing today . It felt like we were two men down in the midfield all day.

Dare I say it , but Kingy was well and truly out coached today had no answer to the short kick and chip keeping off game.

Our terrible ball use and turnovers early, especially going inside 50 really gave them the confidence they could get on top.

They wanted it a lot more than us too

Time to play Max Heath.

Other Max, yes is GOAT, but makes us so predictable, he cannot carry us every week.

Backline needs change, need to get better ball users.

Teams sag off Lever and tmac hoping ball goes to them, there kicking is F grade level

I didn't see a second of the game, but I've read the script before.

Overpaid, overrated group of lazy footballers decide it's all getting a bit hard and just give up.

Has King dropped anyone in the first five weeks? This is what he gets when the players aren't held accountable for their efforts, or lack thereof.

I can stand losing, but I can't stand not trying. I can't imagine what Brisbane will do to us next week if there isn't a decent response.

jake lever - slow, poor decision making, hack kicking.

harvey langford - minimal effort, poor skills

xavier lindsay - needs the weight room.

jai culley - provided nothing.

tmac - no good.

overall that was terrible. poor skills. consistent turn overs from kicks long down the line. Broken tackles.

same old melbourne.

flame head looks great but its not helping out preformance. bin it.

on the brightside:

blake howes unreal.

Great goal though

Back to earth today. Out played, out coached. Bummer..s

First play of the game.Gawn gets a magnificent tap out, straight to Windsor who collects it, bounces once, and then… a grubber kick to Essendon.

WTF??

And more generally: Melbourne hot favourites to win against a bottom of the ladder team, and we lose? Has that ever happened before?

And I completely agree with everyone who says, what on earth are we doing? Letting players be 20 m free for a short kick, no doubt thinking that the short kick doesn't matter?

It does.

Reality check.

It's more annoying because now we have to hear in the media about their win.

People ask me have I been to gather round. This is why.

Such a poor performance today, can’t stand losing to them.

I knew there would be ups and downs this season but after a few good wins it’s harder to swallow this kind of loss. We looked way off the pace, lacked intensity and coordination around the contests, didn’t run hard enough, made a bunch of skill errors and just didn’t take it to them.

Highlights were Steele, Kozzy, Disco, Langford’s goal at the end, and 250 games for a great servant of the club.

Lowlights were the umpiring, Garry Lyon on the commentary, and numerous MFC players.

Welcome to the MFC Kingy

Good luck with that

I recommend completing the frontal lobotomies on the players before the next game

When i saw the messiah pic of King after last weeks win, i knew we were doomed.

We really gave up 2 first round picks for Petty to turn him into undersized ruck, huh.

I said in the pre game that Scott would use an uncontested game against us and I was proven right. He just knows that it's our weakness.

Brad Scott with his unbelievable record against us plus our terrible Adelaide oval record since 2023 = disaster

We did go 2-0 at Adelaide in 5 days in 2024.

Scott did the same thing last year but obviously nobody watched the game as part of the prep. Or it was never mentioned, or the players did not implement. One of those.

in a performance full of lowlights i thought our hack kicks and bombing it inside 50 was the worst

Intent wasn't there today. How many missed tackles did we have? Clearly just thought we'd win and not have to show up.

Welcome to the real Melbourne, Steven king

Not sure Culley has been seen to go missing so far this year

we’re all gonna die one day etc etc

I nearly died in my forties when Tsatas kicked a goal.

Two of the better wins since the flag followed by one of the worst.

We made so many absolute nothing footballers and third gamers look like stars. I mean Darcy [censored] Parish. Jesus [censored] Christ.

But the midfield was actually 'outdone' by the backline. Said it after the Freo game: Xavier Taylor can't come on quickly enough.

My eldest didn’t watch the game (thankfully) and I kid you not he just showed me this page of a book he is reading, and asked me what those words mean…

Contemptible

Deplorable

Despicable

Loathsome

Hahahah life is funny

(I said broadly ‘very bad’ and did not tell him the result).

He looked better when moved forward in 2nd half.

Other point should be is where did Van Rooyen go after and 1 .

Must of already hit performance base in this year's contract

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

    Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

    Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

    I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
