Yes, it's a mashup.

I heard they recorded with a chipped mic.

You can aways get an indication of the crowd the day before the game, when they release the GA areas on the MCG website

If they close the 4th level of the Warne stand (which has only become a recent thing for MFC games) you’re looking at a sub 40,000 crowd.

I expect high 30’s based on previous games between the 2 sides at the G.

It’s round 1. High 40s I reckon

It does make me wonder if we pick a more dynamic small forward in Matthews or Cross purely because of the need to score and create chaos inside 50 in those brief windows you've got to score or force a turnover. That might depend on just what they expect from Latrelle and Kozzie and how far up the ground they play.

I can't see us selecting a player who didn't play a (senior) practice match.

Sounds like Culley is a lock, but that is injury related.

I’m not sure the likes of Sharp, Laurie and Kolt got enough out of 6 quarters of fairly low quality practice games to cement them in. Especially if others are doing more in match sim drills that have been held routinely for weeks now.

Jai definitely. Kolt, maybe. No Sharp or Laurie in my team.

Should be a large number of Saints supporters given that it's the first Melbourne game with their new dream team.

MFC makes good money from away supporters but I'm not seeing any great media build up. Essendon v Hawthorn seems to be the one they're pushing.

Predictable given the last game fiasco b/w these two teams and the list changes over summer

Our team needs to earn respect by playing a game that justifies growing expectations

I’m not surprised, there’s a lot of unknown quantities with us. New coach, new game plan, new midfield group, more reliance on our younger brigade, May’s influence absolutely waned last year but he was still the glue of our backline, Tracc and Oliver were pretty consistent week in, week out (i.e. below their best but still ‘good’) so we knew what to expect by the end of 25.

Is JVR dependable as a KPF? Is Petty dependable as a KPD? Lever, Petty, Disco in a backline not working off May? Will the new midfield group gel together from round 1? Forward connection fixed? If not fixed, better?

IMO, there’s a lot that needs to go right from so many changes in key parts of the ground. If King has us ready to go and is able to address our previous shortfalls and we win Round 1 then bloody hell my hat is off to him. But I think that is a lot to ask for in one pre-season.

The Saints played at the MCG on Sunday v Collingwood and attracted > 82,000 spectators (albeit most of them Pies fans).

edit: I assume you meant a game IN Melbourne, not against Melbourne.

Sorry

I forgot that the interstate opening round had a Melbourne blow in.

I was more concentrating on Oscar's off at Albert Park and didn't bother too much with football.

So, I understand that XT is more of a half-back type but as an extra rotation through the midfield as an option? Maybe on the back of the midfield, clean-up style

He’s been asked this a couple of times now Macca & he’s always mentioned himself just wanting to play in the back half.

Play where you are picked?

Or is that just Boomer talk? haha

I think it will be Langdon tagging NWM

I think that's a good idea.

Langdon did a good job on Nick Daicos keeping him to 19 touches last year and the latter's lack of influence went a long way to us almost pinching the game despite us being in the midst of a horror month of performances. A good job on NAS this Sunday and we're in with a shot.

NAS must receive a close tag IMO.

St Kilda will only go as far as NAS will take them this year. Last year he averaged 32 possessions in both games against us and single handily beat us in the round 20 Marvel game. Had he not played that game, we 99.99% win it and Goodwin might be still coaching us.

Is anyone else almost grateful that happened? We needed a fresh start and honestly I am much more optimistic this year compared to last

It hurt like nothing else being at that game. The humiliation walking out of Marvel while St Kilda supporters were celebrating harder than their 1966 premiership will be hard to forget.

The coach had to be sacked after that game as the entire "on field" component of the club lost the plot in a quarter of footy, after a prolonged period (30 odd games) of poor results and downward trends.

However, things happen for a reason, and as you said the club was crying out for a fresh start.

I would start Kossie in the midfield and Langdon forward and then push Langdon to NMW and let Kossie cheat forward.

Looking forward to seeing Jack Steele in those red and blue colours.

When are we announcing our debutants? If we have any ofc

My tips are trelly, Jiath and Steele and hopefully the big moose

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
