So, I understand that XT is more of a half-back type but as an extra rotation through the midfield as an option? Maybe on the back of the midfield, clean-up style

Back in the day, that role was described as the kick behind the play type

Remembering that a lot of the onus in the midfield will fall on to some relative newcomers (Windsor, Lindsay, Langford, Kolt and even Culley)

Our midfield will contain a lot of young talent but nevertheless, our combined midfield might be the youngest in the comp (without Viney and without the 2 others that headed North )

I can see him playing a fold back wing role. I suspect they'll ask Culley, Langford and even Howes (as he did in the practice games) to take on that kind of role at times. XT would be another option. Rivers and Steele will also both play like that from the midfield at times.

If we have more than a few half forward injuries I'd just throw him forward and tell him to use his competitive spirt and athleticism to do his best. Richmond did that last year with Luke Trainor. I don't think it would hurt him as a short term thing, and the way he reads the play and attacks the ball at half back would make him a bit of fun across half forward, at least in getting the footy.

So what's the story with XT?

Thought he might have been a plug-in-and-play type. Track-watchers?

We actually have an abundance of taller guys that can play down back so I think they are just taking their time as he missed valuable practice game time

We have Petty, Lever, TMac, Turner, CJ, Taylor and Howes.

From watching some of the better sides in Opening Round I suspect transition defending is basically impossible against good sides (or even mediocre ones). There's a very limited window to get pressure and force a turnover.

The speed at which players were retreating after a turnover was insane. The focus to set the defence was huge.

That will settle down after a few rounds I suspect but teams like Coll and Bris were happy just to chip it around their backline, changing angles and waiting for the right angle kick before pulling the trigger.

Interesting watch and the better drilled teams seemed to come out on top.

Does anyone know if we've gone back to having a day's break between our main training session and our Captain's run or are we still doing the main training, then captain's run then game day (i.e. 3 sessions in a row)?

I always thought the change last year caused fitness issues...

How good is it having a pre-game thread again!?

They're always filled with such hope, promise and excitement - moreso this one given we're close to our first game of the year. A clean slate. Lots of kids out there.

And as of now, WE ARE UNDEFEATED!!!

whos XT

Xavier Taylor...plays for some club called the Dees

What I will be looking at this game, the first game, is our conversion rate. It is so important to bed our conversion rate for our confidence.

Players individual performance is secondary in my book at this stage to getting goals.

One might be forgiven for suggesting individual performances should always take second place to "getting goals' ( as a team ).

The goal is after all ....goals

going now.....

A crowd of 50k would be a nice start.

Who do we play on NasiahWanganeen-Milera?

I suggest trying one of these 3

Koltyn Tholstrup

Changkuoth Jiath

Trent Rivers

Round 1, 2016 vs a highly fancied GWS side and we knocked off. We can do the same to St Kilda, albeit they aren’t as talented as what that GWS side was.

The side we have now is still capable of competing. On paper, we should be pushing for finals (7 or 8). All the talk from ā€œexpertsā€ about wooden spoons and bottom 4 is [censored]

A fit Lever can form a strong core with Turner, McDonald and/or Petty amongst the likes of the emerging Blake Howes and a Salem who can still contribute.

Then there’s the midfield. Langford can seriously break out such is his talent and Windsor + Lindsay playing with a lot more freedom and license to just roam. Compound those 3 with Rivers, Pickett, Langdon the reliable Steele, that’s an exciting midfield blend of youth, speed and experience.

The forward line is the most interesting part . JVR has shown potential in his first 4 seasons, so he should be gearing up for a big 2026, but a fit Mihochek will help him immensely. Fritsch, Chandler and Sparrow to boot . Not a bad forward setup.

The side we rolled out in round 1 2016 is not as talented as the one we will roll out in 6 days time and beat the side that many tipped to make the top 4.

I just don’t rate St Kilda at all. We can beat them and beat them well by around 3-4 goals.

Nice to hear optimism on this site.

PS I think you forgot Culley, as a mid and or forward. Strong, fairly quick, high flying and a good kick.

Getting real now! Extended bench announced tonight and the full team announced Friday! Fingers crossed we see a few debutants and the club release some videos of players getting told they’re plying this week. So pumped for the season and can’t wait to go on this new chapter and ride with all your dees supporters! Go dees

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
