really, he should be the logical 'replacement' for viney in the midfield

i'm yet to be convinced he will be

I would have let him go. He was bloody awful v Magpies. Has stagnated

UM,.. check the top of the page for the authors best 23, that'll do me!!

I’m pleased Jeffo is seemingly progressing nicely but I’m not sure we should be playing 3 tall fwds plus Fritsch. Will be interested to see who makes the team come rd 1.

MIhocek integrated back into full training this week and Petty trained with the non contact cap on. I assume both will be ready round 1.

How the hell does Howes make the team and Latrelle doesn’t?

I wouldn't have Howes in the side.

Panics and coughs up goals in defence when the pressure is on.

Opposition small forwards would be licking their lips against that backline

McVee gone and Bowey injured stings.

Well Trelly doesn't replace Howes. I have him in the team ahead of Melky.

CJ is in the backline as well. I have queries on Lindsay's defensive abilities and whilst Taylor will go past Howes I'm not sure he's there yet.

So Howes is in my team at present but all that could change with the match sim/ practice matches. It is a rolling 23. AMW is the other I really want in the team but he has to earn his stop back.

IMO Kozzy/Rivers/Steele will be our midfield core. Langford and Culley will rotate mostly through wing/HF/midfield IMO.

FB: CJ xxxxxx xxxxxx

HB: Salem Disco Lindsay

C: Langdon Steele Langford

HF: Chandler JVR xxxxx

FF: Fritsch Mihocek L. Pickett

Foll: Gawn Rivers K. Pickett

Int: Culley, Windsor, 3 x ????

Backs: 2 of May, McDonald, Petty, Lever or Adams. One of Howes vs X Taylor. Smokie -AMW

Mids: need one more mid, likely Sparrow, perhaps Laurie. Viney if healthy.

Forwards: 1 of Jeffo, AJ or Luker. Perhaps Melk when fit. 1 more half forward, Possibly Kolt. Perhaps Laurie or Sharp. Smokie - Mentha.

We might change up the roles but there’s probably 17 that are a lock if Trelly Pickett can back up the training form.

Practice games probably sort out the talls which could go a lot of ways. Then sorting out the last guy picked back, mid and forward.

Yep not up to it yet, and may never be. LATRELLE has been sensational and easily makes my team

Seriously Chandler has done zilch in match sims this season, underwhelming to say the least!

Kade is a lock. Future captain material.

All set to dominate in 2026.

Haven't seen anything in this player that screams best 23, haven't heard any track watches exhorting his match sim form and as for captaincy material, he can captain Casey!

I would add that sparrow is a lock at half forward. Has been very involved in the match sims and brings as much tackling and fwd half pressure as anyone on the team

It is difficult Picket when a player annoys you it’s hard to look past the annoyance to see their virtues but I think that Kade Chandler has a great tank and a lot of tools to work with, he also sleeps, eats and breathes team first ethics and Can mark and kick.

I agree he goes missing for long periods, Chandler is not an automatic lock in best 23.

Chandler will get picked before Jeffo.

I bet he'll kick more goals in season 2026 as well.

He's played every game for the past 2 seasons. I think that gives a pretty good indication that if he's fit, he's pretty much a lock.

Um they play different positions for a start, and as for playing every game under the Goodwin regime, that might well be but this is a new ball game. Finally agree he does go missing for long periods, a seriously OVERATED player, but lets revisit as the season gets underway eh then again at halfway and at seasons end!

That didn’t seem to be an issue when you were replacing Howes with Latrelle Pickett

My rolling best 23.

B: Lever, Petty, Lindsay

HB: Taylor, Turner, Jiath

C: Langford, Steele, Culley

HF: Chandler, van Rooyen, L.Pickett

F: Fritsch, Miocek, Jefferson

FOLL: Gawn, Rivers, K.Pickett

IC: Windsor, Langdon, Sparrow, Mentha, Laurie

EMERG: Howes, Tholstrup, McDonald

as it stands i think round 1 is looking something like this

McDonald Petty Lever

Taylor Turner Jiath

Langdon Steele Lindsay

Gawn KPickett Rivers

Chandler vanRooyen Fritsch

Melksham Jefferson LPickett

Culley Windsor Langford Sparrow Tholstrup

E: Heath Johnson Howes Kentfield

?: Mihocek Salem Sharp Laurie

No Chance: Viney Bowey Henderson McAdam May Campbell

on paper its poor and worse so is the absence of any meaningful depth beyond the side except for key forwards ironically

do we actually know whats up with salo?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
