Kozzie and Trelly are blood relatives but it’s by no means easy to explain.

Trelly’s mum and Kozzie’s dad are first cousins. One of Kozzie’s aunts has children to one of Trelly’s dad’s cousins (Trelly’s second cousin). On Trelly’s dad’s side Kozzie is Trelly’s nephew and on Trelly’s mum’s side Koz and Trelly are second cousins.

That’s how Trelly explained it. He must’ve noticed I was battling to keep up so he said I should write it down, and I did. There was no way I’d remember it.

Trelly said Koz calls him “Uncle.” I said, “Really?” Trelly said “Yeah definitely, ask him.” So I did. Koz said yes he does call Trelly Uncle.

At this point I was confident I understood the whole thing but then Koz said “and I call Trelly’s dad Pop.” Once again I was back to the land of confusion. I said “So, Trelly’s dad is your granddad?” Koz said, “Nah I just like calling him Pop.” He was greatly amused by my confusion. Cheeky bugger

A new sneaky tactic: They could explain all that to oppo players during the game. The opponent would be so confused they would lose all concentration on the game.

When I arrived Langdon was on the ground by himself, drifting up and down the ground, kicking the ball to himself, and having shots on goal, whilst the staff set up.

TMc next to arrive, then Max G, wearing a bucket hat. Last out were Viney and Hendo who spent most of their time on the bikes. Viney was man on the mark for Trelly and was yelling 'Its your first game, and your having a shot....

Ghosty was in fine form

Berry looks a footballer but his lack of AFL fitness does show.

If the game is in the balance and Max H is kicking for goal look the other way.

Disco and Max G running the boundary, with disco looking over his shoulder as if to say Where are you? The gap widened. Btw those running the (boundary) line have right of way so players coming off for a drink have to make way.

First time I have seen Trelly and he moves very well in traffic. Was impressed.

XT obviously has 'it' and is very energetic.

May is a good kick for goal.

Lever was yelling encouragement to Tom Matthews as he rehabed. Tom spent most of his time running, under the watchful eye of a trainer. Knee still an issue.

Onley led from the front in his groups running.

Langford looks colosal. Ran the line then kick to kick with trainer/Jones from 10, 20 then 30m etc. Did a drill where he ran in a straight line, turned left then about turn to the right. Repeat.

As I left 4 galahs were watching on from the top of the netting behind the goals.

So 4 more demonlanders were there then....

Apologies for the late report.

Absent: Bowey (understandable) JVR and Mentha (gastro mentioned) and Laurie

Serious rehabbers: bikes, etc.. Viney and Henderson

Contuining rehab: Mathhews, off his PCL, McAdam off his achilles, AMW

Niggles only in rehab: Gawn, Campbell, Langford, Melksham, Langdon, Turner

Concur re Trelly and Culley as standouts. Onley hard to get a read on (athletic build) - no serious matchsim today.

AJ and Kentfield look seriously fit. Good to see Mihocek seems to have no issue with his toe/tendon, has been in full training for a while - same with Steele and CJ. Heath hasn't missed a session - in other words the trades (in) are looking good.

Hendo is rehabbing from injury, but it’s not his groin as some of us thought, his groin is (in his words) cherry ripe.

This is a new injury. At the camp he started to feel pain in his lower back so was sent for scans. Turns out he has a small bone fracture in his sacrum. It’s called a fatigue fracture (same as a stress fracture).

They told him it’s likely the result of him going too hard in the gym, coupled with the fact that he hasn’t been eating enough.

He said he doesn’t think he needs surgery as it would’ve been scheduled and done already.

He has a program that includes exercises that help with healing the area and he said the pain is manageable and has decreased a lot.

Still on the subject of Hendo: he works so hard and does everything he possibly can to be at his best. Despite the injuries, he’s always in great spirits and is always optimistic. He’s simply a wonderful person in every way, and he’s ever-grateful to have been picked up by us.

Is Jack Viney in doubt for the opening rounds?

Hard to say - but they are clearly being cautious. Of all on our list he should be able to catch up on the conditioning. Even on the bike he goes hard!

any update on JvR?

Not sure if it’s already been mentioned but both Ricky Mentha and Roo have a gastro-type illness. They’re both expected back for Friday’s training session.

Gastro apparently.

I attended some of this session. I had the great pleasure of talking to my great friend the wonderful Ghostwriter. I was impressed with the way that Trelly moved, and his great skills. It was good to see the CEO attending most the session. It was good to see Ryan Hoffman formly of the Storm there. Was it Matthew Scarlett working with the defenders?

Yes, I think it was Scarlett - looks like Wednesday is his day. Well spotted re Ryan Hoffman - had the official tracksuit on. Maybe a tackling specialist coach?

Ta

Was hoping there was no correlation between him getting a bake last training and his non-appearance today.

Would love your thoughts on the following:

  • Trelly Pickett - how does he look on the track and do you think he is a high chance for round 1?

  • Riley Onley - does he move well and look solid through the midfield?

  • X Taylor - could he be the Bowey replacement?

Ron (Riley Onley) is very agile and even nimble for his size.

Thanks to Six6Six

Wonder if Gawny requested Matthews be his ruck opponent. Good confidence booster which as we all know Maxy desperately needs in the ruck, .

Yeah must be

Trelly’s first request for his signature on a #33 guernsey. I told him he’ll be getting many requests for his signature on #33 guernseys. He smiled broadly.

Luker saw us from a distance and came over. He said, “I assume that’s not yours, it’s a gift for someone, right?” I said yes. I lied. 😅

I wonder if Barnes is alluding to more midfield or forward time for Kozzie?

I hope Petty remains as a forward. Aside from 1 good game V GWS, he was really poor in the early 2025 games as a defender.

When I played grade 3 basketball, our genius plan was similar... eat chives from the playground and blow bad breath in our opponents faces so we could steal the ball 😂

I played junior football against a renowned tough team and one of my teammates applied stick on tattoos to ‘disrupt’ the opposition.

The problem was that it started raining and the aforementioned skin ink ran and the moment was lost😱

Is it possible there's nothing wrong with Langdon and that he's running with Langford as a pacemaker, or just to keep him company?

Fun thought but they’re not going to sacrifice Lingers pre season to be a pacemaker

Eat baked beans and it won’t be bad breath you are blowing

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
