Worst Ever Draft Decision (& Best)

Thank you Captain Obvious. So enlightening.

And in the PSD we had first pick & picked a dud instead of a champion - and then told supporters it was a coup.

Okay, so, let's imagine you've got five bricks.

You pick up the first one and drop it on your head.

You pick up the second one and drop it on your head.

You pick up the third one and drop it on your head.

You pick up the fourth one and drop it on your head.

You pick up the fifth one and drop it on your head.

You exclaim "There's something wrong with that fifth brick, it dropped on my head! Stupid brick!"

Taking 4 players before Nat Fyfe wasn’t exactly state of the art drafting by the club in 2009.

Also, (allegedly) promising Rory Sloane’s parents that we’d pick him with our second to fourth selection after Jack Watts. Only to then proceed to pick up Blease, Strauss and Bennell while allowing Sloane to be picked up by Adelaide in the 40’s.

Amid the raffle that is AFL drafting, the Rory Sloane one is probably the one that I feel most ashamed about as a Dees follower. I know there are no guarantees, but MFC gave solid assurances to Sloane and his family, only to renege. Poor form.

Recruiting Heffernan from the Bombers was an absolute howling trade.

The hype around Diamond Jim Tilbrook was an epic fail.

The Kozzie/Jackson/ draft was one of our best - had a direct impact on us winning a flag.

Not sure of what your point is other than maybe you enjoy bricks landing on your head.

The fact that us (& Richmond) passed JM & DG in the main draft is irrelevant.

In the PSD we effectively had a clear choice of 2 & demonstrably got it wrong.

Find a worse drafting decision we have made or go & find more bricks.

IMV Jimmy Toumpas was the WORST DECISION EVER for MFC I remember getting shouted down by demonlanders for non support of his selection. But suffice to add what a shocking selection!

The point of these types of thread??

Presumably to perpetuate MFCSS when in remission after a solid JT draft

I’m outs here.😁👍

Surely skipping Dustin Martin in the Scully / Trengove was the biggest fail.

With hindsight, there hasn’t been a bigger draft fail in history. Our two picks who went pretty much nowhere. The one behind him won a Brownlow and 3x norm smiths 🥴

Dylan Grimes was available for the entire national draft, in which we had six selections, none of which were Dylan Grimes.

I'm beginning to convert my irritation into a kind of Petrie dish fascination.

Not sure he was that good looking, LG, but your fascination does have a place here. He went at 23 in his draft (2000). Our pick before (16) was a good'un...for another club: Scott Thompson.

Not a great drafting year for us after the highs of that year, except for another pick deep in the rookie draft...for another club: Darren Jolly. Ross Funke added some naming fun, and Daniel Breese, well... Thereafter, a 'What ever happened to?' list: Mitchell Craig, Nick Gill, Kevin Devine, Mark Berts, Ben Doherty and Tom Marshall.

Eeyores gotta Eeyore

Hard to go past Scully. You could forgive us picking up a disloyal little [censored] who was an exceptional footballer. Or a rock solid citizen who turned out not to be the player he hoped. But to go for the greedy [censored] who ended up having two years as a B-grader, and the rest a bog ordinary running ball butcher... awful.

But he captained Vic Metro and was widely regarded to be a clear number one - so a lot of people got him completely wrong.

I was likely one of the shouter downers Picket. I thought he was bankable as a dynamic goalkicking mid in under 18s. Still shocked at how it all turned out.

I will say though that people are never quicker to defend Watts with the line that he would have thrived had he come to a club that wasn't a basketcase. It's rare to hear people say this about Toumpas and the club was even more of a basketcase when he arrived.

Hindsight is easy.

So true.

I just predicted we would win the first test in two days, as well as predicting the winners of this year’s Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate.

Jack Watts was a better player than Toumpas without question and was acknowledged as the best or second best player of his ND year.

Toumpas had his doubters from the beginning and many wanted Jack Viney’s good mate Ollie Wines and were very upset when we chose Toumpas.

But spilt milk now.

There is no doubt that after an few obvious picks each year, the job gets much harder predicting who will be a good AFL player.

I never saw Kozzie as he is now, but JT might have.
