This was very much my audible reaction! But, and I hate to say it, something about it rang true to me. And he's out of contract. After he hit 100, I was reflecting on the idea that at some point something would have to give (new challenge for him, new voice for our players), but was hoping for one more season so we can really hit our stride in this iteration of the team.

Anyway, time will tell. All focus on tomorrow! Game result aside, very likely our last game in Melbourne so a last chance for many to send off some key figures in person. Not to retire or trade anyone early (I refuse to be wrong about Paxy for the millionth time)!

I do wonder about the possibly of Chaplin as a late out...

I really hope so. Good for continuity and she's highly rated. If there's going to be a vacancy, I hope we're able to jump early and get the best candidate (sound familiar?!). Hopefully the club is on the ball.

Yes, after such a glorious stretch it does make a lot of sense that he may wish to pursue a different challenge, try a new environment... but much like you, I was hoping for another year or two with our young core.

can barely watch

I'm running laps around the living room, too intense!!

Norf cleaner.

Fantastic effort Dees. Tried hard all day, hold your heads high. Great learning curve for us to fight back next year

Concentration started to slip in the last, and there were too many contests and loose balls we were second to get to.

Great effort, needed just a bit more for a bit longer.

3rd qtr and thew inability to convert into goals going into the last qtr really hurt us. Otherwise it was a great game by the girls against what has been the best team all year. As I said, we needed to win the first week of finals to avoid them in a GF. If we played like the last 2 weeks, then we would have beaten Brisbane but we dropped the ball that game.

One team had a weeks rest and I think it showed in the last.

We ran out of run and gun.

Incredible effort by this team.

Bugger

Ah damn. Always up against it to beat that outfit. Just goes to show that the gap is closing and I think this year will be Norths last year of domination.

Awesome game by the girls. Effort and intensity was brilliant.

Unbelievable efforts from the girls.

Just couldn’t keep the manic pressure up for 4 quarters

Should be very proud of their effort but it must sting

Needed win Qualifying final to also have a week off

North over powered us in the end but a valiant effort.

To genuinely compete We need more grunt. Heath hanks bullied too much

Third quarter misses very costly

Great season though. They can hold their heads high

Was never happening. AFL do like an interstate prelim

It’s a pity more dees fans aren’t interested in aflw. We have a great team to follow. Plenty of heart.

And I had no problems at all with the north fans today. They supported their team throughout and showed up in big numbers.

Great effort to stick with them and keep the pressure on for so long, their overall talent and inner belief were just to much for us today. Top effort Dees. Will be sad if Stinear leaves though.❤️💙

You can't blame them in some ways. They've had nothing to cheer for for years with the North mens side.

Good on them for showing up and thanks to everyone from the MFC that made it there today.

It sounded like a great atmosphere on the coverage

An incredible game by our girls... they put everything they had into it. Wish we'd managed to overcome them in the last, but at least we gave them a good scare! Could see some desperation from North was required to get over us.

Just from seeing the scores, it looks like we were in front for the majority of the game, they just got us in the last quarter

Melbourne supporters are an absolute disgrace and should be ashamed of themselves for that turnout.

I was there and it was 90% North supporters , helped get them over the line in the end.

Felt sorry for our girls and embarrassed.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
