Sam Grlj

Sam Grlj (pronounced Grill, or George to his mates) zigs, zags, dances and prances his way to yet another Demonland draft thread

Ironically enough Draft Central compares him to our own Caleb Windsor:

A bolt from the blue in more ways than one, Grlj (pronounced โ€˜grillโ€™) was cooking early in the year. The Oakleigh Chargers speedster has a bit of Caleb Windsor about him in the way he takes ground so aggressively, tucking the ball under his arm and gaining separation from the chasing pack with ease. He is incredibly difficult to contain, often dancing around opponents or buying just enough time to find a teammate, but also tearing off into space with his potent turn of foot. Grlj cut his teeth as a half-back and outside runner last year but has transitioned beautifully into the midfield, bringing his brand of footy to the fore each week. Line-breaking players can sometimes lack composure but he has showcased an ability to hit targets on the move and not blaze away at all costs. He reverted back to his role across half-back for Vic Metro and remains in the picture as a top 15 talent after his emphatic return to action with Oakleigh. Some clubs may pick him early on a needs basis.

think he is my #1 now, extremely impressive numbers at the combine

I'd push for 2 highs picks for Trac in this years draft. One to secure Grlj (assuming Robey not available) and the second to get Oskar Taylor. Both are quick, great kicks, take game on, very athletic.

Good that he is an actually good prospect, because that name MUST be drafted. Behind only Yze for efficiency of scrabble hand.

I would've thought his nickname would be 'Bjr'.

If we sign this lad, cant write to post about him on the Dmnlnd.cm/frm

Bro was running so fast even his last name got jumbled

I definitely think Grlj will be on JTs list.

But โ€ฆhe was excellent for the Richmond VFL team in two games this year. The Tigers VFL described him as โ€œvery impressiveโ€. Theyโ€™d be mad to bypass him with their picks, but itโ€™s a strange world so you never know.

Grlj had great draft combine

From ESPN FOOTY

The 2025 combine king

Sam Grlj (pronounced Grill) didn't claim any combine titles but he proved himself as the premier athlete in this year's draft class.

On Friday, the dashing midfielder trailed only Jack Dalton in the 2km time trial at AIA Centre, breaking the line at 5:59 to sneak under the six-minute mark. It was a time that would have taken out the test in last year's stacked pool.

On Sunday, Grlj backed up his endurance feat with a fantastic 2.931 seconds in the 20m sprint. No prospect has combined for a sub-six minute 2km and sub-three second 20m sprint at the national combine in the past two years.

His acceleration is backed up on-field -- Grlj takes on all-comers and burns away from his direct opponents in space. Clubs have had concerns around his contested work and damage by foot but Grlj's athletic profile and attacking mentality give him massive upside in time.

the more i think about it the more i agree especially as he played in richmonds vfl side

WCE: Duursma CDT

Rich: Robey Grjl

Ess: XTaylor, Sharp?

i really don't know where that leaves us

i kind of dont like where we sit at all, would love to be at 5 and 15 so much more i think, maybe we pick one and then slide back when someone else really likes whats left over

NHH, Farrow, Lindsay

if we are to slide, i think the Dons bid on Dean, swallows pick 9 and the blues 11 gets pushed back and we offer them GC F1 to move back and then sell one of ours for a future pick elsewhere to get the Dove

tigers will end up with both imo

Iโ€™d be taking those two over Duursma and CDT (West Coast)

Duursma has no weapons imo, a jack of all trades master of none type.

Richmond went tall last year, so will focus on mids/ smalls this draft no doubt

This makes me wonder if they would be open to splitting 3. They've got big bodied Smillie and Lalor to go with Taranto and Hopper. They get their outside mid in Grlj to go with Hotton. Would it make sense for them to grab some more pieces around the park in their rebuild like a Lindsay at HBF etc

According to Twomey, pick 12, which is effectively our #8 after the 4 academy/FS selections prior

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: โ€œIs Melbourne even at the ground?โ€ Moments later, as Carltonโ€™s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demonsโ€™ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.ย
