I like the fact we've gone with a dedicated small forward. A lot of players that have come through the conventional footy systems have great fitness, and there always seems like there's an intention to eventually transition them into a midfielder. And while a midfielder who also averages a goal a game is very handy, there remains great value in having crafty forwards who know exactly what their role is and won't get sucked up the ground too much.

To be honest, I was misled by a dodgy stat about LSP published in the lead-up to the draft. Some reports had him at 170 cm tall, but he's apparently 182 cm, which is a huge difference! It makes you wonder how many others were misinformed like me.

Kozzie is about 170ish tall I think

JT also mentioned Kozzi specifically wants mentor responsibilities. The best organisations inspire their people by ensuring they continue to grow professionally and as human beings. Having a generational talent like Koz - who makes us all catch our breath when he's near the footy - guide Latrelle's development? It’s a win for Koz and Latrelle which we all hope will lead to a huge win for the MFC.

Koz always talks about the responsibility of being a role model for his younger siblings and cousins back home. You can tell by the beaming smile on his face right now that this is a genius move by the Club; Win for Latrelle, win for Koz. I expect we're going to see a lurch forward in development of Koz going forward too - not necessarily in his onfield game, but his leadership skills.

Lots of talent and all the best for him!

Just pondering why the club dosent seem to draft big power fwds, understanding we JVR & Miacheck but not convinced on Jefferson

He is only 19??

Bloke looks 32!

Your question has the answer.

We picked up Jefferson based on (my opinion) us needing a tall forward and he being the ‘best of the lot’ at ND15 a few years ago.

You don’t push it with ‘needs’ at the draft.

if you want a player whose going to give you something to build a midfireld around, play 200+ games and maybe captain the club you would look to taking Sharp. If you want to add a bit of mongrel and offensive defensive role you take Taylor. If you want a guy who is going to run rings around defences and drive opposition coaching crazy you pick Latrelle. We look like having a very tall forward line with both Gawn and Heath resting there for 40% of the time. Mihocheck, Petty and a new look JVR are also very mobile so it's perfect for Latrelle

Dees have taken a risk with Pickett at selection 12. you can see that he has exquisite skills however he hasn’t played much at senior level or top under age football. Is this a concern?

I actually think the gap year(s) issue could actually be made into a positive by the AFL pouring some resources into the SANFL, WAFL and VFL to ensure their fitness and other programs are closer to the AFLs in standard.

that is never, ever going to happen

Big risks can have big returns

Correct that he hasn't been fortunate enough to have been playing Coates league but there are quite a few examples of players taken from other pathways that have proven more than capable at AFL level

These kids all mature at differing rates, the opportunities presented may be quite different based on a whole range of factors

He is still very young, but I like the fact he has been playing against mature aged players albeit at a lower level

Get him into our system, get the right people around him (coaching, conditioning and players) and hopefully he will be another diamond in the rough

One of the greatest raw talents we have ever seen at the MFC was plucked from obscurity - anyone remember that bloke from Yuendumu Magpies (Liam Jurrah)

I was stoked with the Taylor pick and I'm pleased with the calculated risk taken on Pickett.

Bold moves build clubs.

Im surprised some on here are complaining when he was a rated a 1st round pick anyway. I watched him a few times for Glenelg and he basically has the same attributes as his cousin without the physicality. Trust JT with this one.

Latrelle comes to us with a nickname which he’d like to keep…

'Twas a clever-d*** inquiry as to veracity.

That worked well.

Steele and Viney are the future, so you wouldn’t necessarily NOT pick an inside mid based on that if you highly rate them - there’s every chance they just didn’t rate sharp becoming that level of inside mid and see - to your point - opportunity next year to fill a potential need

I guess that’s what my son was getting at (no, I’m not throwing him under the bus 🤣), so yes, I do understand your point.

weird way to spell kuzzy

Sounds too much like Kozzie. When we adoringly chant for a player like the psychos we are we’d prefer folks to know for whom we chant 😜

I can hear us now…

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
