There’s a longer gap between Opening Round and KB than between KB and the final round, which is when we’ve played Collingwood the past two years.

According to Caro, fight is on as to who gets to play the filth in round 0 as a standalone game at the G on a Sunday night - it’s between us, aints, and one other

Can we just ditch opening round as a concept? Just play the prime time games in the northern states in round 1 if we must.

One of the worst concepts the AFL have ever put together.

The only reason opening round should exist is so the teams playing ANZAC day can have a bye before/after.

And its a Saturday next year so completely irrelevant.

Oh, look, a negotiable fixture, rather than one based on fairness and equity. 😅

Looking forward to the Buckley appointment then.. the commercial reality is that Buckley (not MFC) versus his old club, is the best narrative to sell that opening match.

Just imagine if Buckley pulled out now.....just imagine for a sec.

I have a feeling we are going to hear more about this coaching process in time. I wonder who is the main interviewer for these applicants?

I put my hand up but nobody noticed,I would be a great coach in the mould of the great EJ .Pack the back line ,if you cant get the ball belt someone

Get it done Dee's we need the gravitus of Nathan.

Buckleys or nothing.

Whoever becomes coach will need to combat the main issue.

Max Gawn.

Heroics and trophies aside, we need to gain an advantage in the middle, from ball ups, and from kick outs.

Why do we have this vaunted ruckman and champion on field brigade but rarely have a positive ball going our way.?

The season of Woodstock needs to finish.

Hmm

I see to be reading this all different than most. It may be Buckley. But I think he's just the media front-runner because he's a champion of the game, experienced coach who works in the media (and they love him). The process of selecting someone for a position means you start broad and narrow the field. If someone is not in your top 3, then it is better to let them know rather than stringing them along. Yes it is a two way street - they might think this is the wrong fit. But AFL coaching jobs don't come round very long and the Tassie job and any other ones that come up in the next 2 years, they will be battling Longmire, Hinkley, Goodwin, Simpson in addition to other exerienced assistants. There are some drawbacks with the Melbourne job - but most clubs have that one way or another - particularly if they're at the stage of needing a new coach (but things are never as bad / good as you think they are).

So I don't think Skipworth pulling out is necessarily because he doesn't want the job - it's more likely because he knows he's not in the running and so wants to save face. Equally I don't think it's Buckley's job yet. He has the biggest profile so it makes sense in the media. But if those on the panel go through a sham process select Buckley and one of the others goes onto be the next Clarkson / Scott etc then it will be embarrassing for them and the club. It is their job to find the best person - how could any of us say for sure that's Buckley?

I'm hoping for King / Kelly. Obviously will get behind Buckley if it's him.

A potential bonus of an untried coach is I assume they would be paid less than Buckley - which may free up som $$ to get some high quality assistants in.

Ok well...I'll do it as long as Dazzle man is Senior Assistant, and Uncle Bitter is chairman of selectors and after match entertainment coordinator, might give Ghosty a gig as well!

Ghosty would make a great spiritual leader

"A competition source with knowledge of the situation, who wanted to remain anonymous, said Skipworth removed himself from the process as he wanted to continue his development in certain areas under Magpies coach Craig McRae, to whom he is a senior assistant. He is also focusing on his fourth finals campaign at the Magpies as they prepare for the preliminary final next week."

(The Age).

OK, but then why did he agree to be part of the process in the first place? He could have just declined, as others have done.

He's might have pulled out knowing he's out of his depth.

Removing oneself from the process is a bit like a preemptive break up. "You'renot dropping me I'm dropping you."

You get to preserve your brand and dignity.

I didn't want your sh6tty job anyway.

Especially the claim he wants to continue to develop but has consistently put himself forward for roles before this one that are far less attractive.

He didn’t want to get turned down.

Answer because in footys worst kept secret ALL guys pulled out coz they know Bucks has the job!

Guys pull out for lots of reasons: injury, form, or just a well-timed act of risk management.

Caro has given us another almighty whack that seemingly has no basis in reality.

she stated Goodwin should have stayed for the final 3 games, and been sacked at the end of the year. My info is he was offered that and declined. We told him as soon as the decision was made respectfully and we celebrated his time as coach and spoke glowingly of him.

she said he should have been at the BNF. Again my info is he was invited to come and very welcome but he respectfully declined.

now I’m just a random person and I could figure this out, so either Caro has really average sources on this, she hasn’t done enough research or she’s running on bias and telling a fib. I don’t really know what it is, but the idea Melbourne haven’t handled this respectfully if Goodwin is a bit of a joke in my opinion.

My only criticism is I wouldn’t have sacked him and paid him not to coach unless we had someone we saw as an upgrade ready to step in. If John Longmire was keen to join the club for example.

No offence Ted but if your still bothering to read or see anything Caro has to say about the club you're a glutton for punishment. When was the last time she said anything positive about us? IF we kept goodwin and sacked him at years end and had no time to get a new coach before trade week, she would also have laid into us about that too.

Goodwin was her source at the club and she's upset he's no longer there. She was also running PR for Andrew Dillon re: the Quaynor stuff last night. The notion from some that she's a thorn in the AFLs side is ridiculous.

I wonder if he'll get a 3, 4 or 5 year contract?

You'd suspect 4 or 5 given his experience and we'd probably need to pay another year to get him over the line.

That would be a great result, we’d get one of 4 quality assistants

If we get Buckley good chance we get Pies in Opening Round at the G next year.

Potentially but it sounds like St Kilda are campaigning hard to have the annual "Spuds game" in round 0 Sunday night at the G as a permanent fixture.

Happy to play Collingwood just once each year. Cannot beat that mob and we can't afford to be throwing away 4 points to the usual oppo suspects.

She won't care, she can make up stuff and who will make her accountable or challenge her claims?

Unless the club comes out denying the allegations.

“Disco” took his time (four seasons) but the mid-season draftee has been a shining light of Melbourne's campaign, improving to become a versatile option at either end of the ground. He has great marking skills which allows him to play as a marking target up forward or an intercepting defender down back.
