What if we don't improve under Horse? That would be a 'mare.

Was once under a horse myself. can confirmed i went backwards.

I would prefer us to get a highly rated assistant (like a McCrae), however it seems like our club is such that we need a respected name that has the gravitas and strength of character to pull us out of the quagmire. Longmire would have to be my first choice.

Left field approach but is there a way to do another master/apprentice style, say approaching one of the senior experienced coaches to take on the role for 2 years and get someone in as coach in waiting. Not sure who would be open to that.

It's sounding like we are looking for an experienced coach, to me Adam Simpson seems the logical choice with Horse being second.

Assistant coaches wise, is Cam Bruce looking to take the leap into senior coaching? He's been involved in several successful systems in a similar way to Yze.

I feel a poll coming on. It's been a while.

Goodwin had already won a flag. So in a way he knows how to do it.

Getting any of the up and comers is just going to put the team way behind the premiership race.

Bring in Horse and he knows how footy premierships are fought for and won.

Only Horse for mine. Alternatively ask for Goodwin's forgiveness and give him one more shot next year (oh but the club probably is too proud to admit they made a mistake).

There is really no-one out there that I would prefer to Goodwin.

We needed to throw Nate Jones and Selwyn Griffith out at least. But Goody?? Big call. It's all too familiar melbourne demons melodrama for mine.

Prediction is that they'll sink hard

Whilst possibly unpleasant to process what we are seeing today is the result of of much deliberation and consideration. Another part and somewhat prerequisite would be .... well if not Simon, who ?

I can only imagine some calls were made sounding out these options. It would be a little naive i think to think no one has been giving this any thought at all. Despite the utterance , " we're now looking for a coach " .. they've a number ( specifically) in mind.

I bet you there's a list and obviously there'll be someone on top..... even now.

Just my thoughts

Of course they have sounded a person or two out!!

I'm into having a senior assistant to a first time coach, but can we put two people under the cap while still paying Goodwin next year? Maybe they could reshuffle a couple of other FD roles to make room for it.

It may be counter intuitive but

If we are in a rebuild (even small) then you bring in an experience coach; if attacking the finals then the best upcoming fresh coach.

The experienced coach quickens the rebuild and established standards that sets up success for the next phase.

The upcoming fresh coach introduces new and innova6 game plans that are provide an advantage over the tried and now common styles!!!

Flags are very difficult to win.

In the meantime I will settle for finals most years and often contend at PF and GF ala Geelong and Sydney.

Longmire's track record speaks for itself.

He galvanises players and will make the tough calls on standards and culture eg. Didn't select his Captain for the 2024 GF even tho fit. He has gravitas and will not let players rule the roost signs of which have crept into our team in recent times.

As they say in the classics: you need to be in it to win it! Longmire is thereabouts most years. So Longmire for me.

I had thought we should go an untried assistant but the mess the club and FD are in I think we need a savvy operator and experienced head. It is not just about coaching. Actually Head Coaches don’t do much coaching these days. It’s a manager role. Influence our direction, who to trade in, game style, manage assistants.

I doubt Horse would come but he’d obviously be great.

The recent grand final teams were very workmanlike teams who were well drilled but lacked the star power to seriously contend for the flag. Brilliant coaching/effort/discipline to get to the grand final. Perhaps not factoring for water under the bridge, but I think our star power at their best is better than theirs at their best. Be very interesting to see what he could do.

Ange Postecoglou. I believe he is available.

Premiership pretty much guaranteed in 2027 being his 2nd year ... l'll take that

Whoever it is, I for one can't wait for the usual Demonland sad sacks to start to question him immediately, and blame him if we don't go on to win a flag in 2026.

My dream:

Horse to replace Richardson

Enright to replace Goodwin

Cam Bruce to replace Jones

Chaplin back to backline coach

Brad Miller in as forwards coach

Let Choco go if he won't renew for cheaper

Selwyn out and pay anything left to convince Burgess to come back

This would just be to of a good scenario for the Dees, doesn’t fit the script 😂

  • Demonland changed the title to Who Will Be Our Next Coach?

Hard to go past Horse.

Three GFs in 12 years. Almost always in finals

Yes he had COLA & academy i realise but all you can do is get your team in to a granny.

A bit of prep and strat leading into it of course but the rest is on the playing group to deliver on the day.

There aint a heap of stuff the coach can change on the day to win it for them other than minor tweaks.

That's IF he still has the fire in the belly?

If not then fingers crossed the club gets this one right.

There's still a prelim or two (or better) left in the bulk of this present group with a few tweaks i reckon.

Is it too early to start the “Is X the right guy” thread?

It’s just been revealed that any potential suitor for the coaching role will have to answer this question. Will Petty be moved back into defense?

So you are wanting our new coach to have a nervous breakdown on commencing?

One thing i do know, if it's Horse then Kolts getting promoted into the middle!

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
