Hasn't he recently departed all things Melbourne after finishing his little consultancy like 'casho' wrt Caulfield ?

The Club clarified in reference to an earlier article that Pert is no longer involved at the Club.

What it didn't say or ask was what is Gary Pert doing?

Nothing I presume. We were told he was going to continue consulting on Caulfield but seems to have been quietly shunted off as recent articles about Caulfield have mentioned.

It's damning on the people in charge of the governance of the club that it has come to this. Some of the things pointed out in the article are farcical. A comms director put in charge of football decisions? A CEO applicant told no but then asked to keep the seat warm all year? A CEO appointed but can't start for 6 months? I know there have been apologists on here that say it's usual for CEO's to have lengthy notice periods but this is not the case. Organisations don't want CEO's hanging around once they've made the decision to leave. If it were usual then other clubs would have similar issues and it wouldn't be unusual for us to have to wait an entire season for the new CEO to commence.

Also why was Shand at Monday's Board meeting? That seems highly unusual.

Williams one of the most highly paid development coaches in the league. Richo still contracted til end of next season. 🙄

Edited by Dr. Gonzo

It is strange that a CEO doesn't start until so many months down the track. I mean yes he has things to tie up, but but in any organisation I've worked at we've never had to wait this long.

And it's after the season to. Yes I know he's walking with the coach but this is an organisation that is in a rabble at the moment.

Yes the club is in a mess - I'd say that even if the CEO/Board etc were perfect - playing badly is what matters most and that's what we've been doing.

But typical C Wilson. She looks to put the boot in from every angle, however absurd. For example:

"An even stranger double-up was the move to use player development manager Reece Conca as a runner on match days, a clear conflict given he was delivering instructions to players at the same time as he was also responsible for their welfare."

Even stranger?? You could argue that the welfare manager(with footy experience) is the perfect person to be the runner. A person without current experience in that role is more liable to cause damage than one who knows the welfare situation of each player.

C. Wilson has been contacted for comment. (Actually she hasn't, but what a slimey line she repeatedly uses.)

Thanks .. I was really just replying to Bin.

Pert managed to eek yet more coin for God knows what !!

Caulfield, about as symbolic of the club as anything in my view.

Other than temporary job sharing SHE perceives as a major issue l didn't learn a thing other than opinions

The Reece Conca was ridiculous and shows they are putting an article out when to will get clicks due to our onfield efforts

I never know what to make of these articles. Clearly there are on-field problems and obvious shortcomings off-field. But the conclusions may not follow and some BS/unsubstantiated stuff can be thrown in. This piece is not enlightening, just depressing.

I used to think that too, but in the media jostling and scrabbling for AFL headlines, she's slipped.

Had she done her research, she would have known Conca has been a runner since he started at the club (replacing Burns in the same role).

Perhaps she could have also mentioned that Guerra's prior commitment to organising a world conference actually might be significant and that to ditch that for his new role might also be showing a lack of leadership.

Green has always maintained he is President for the short term and that it is particularly difficult juggling that with a young family and a business. If Green was 'bristling,' I doubt it was about that.

Other than that, I agree with the leadership questions but good journos deal in facts rather than framing to suit their narrative.

Green did “bristle”, markedly, in a series of radio interviews earlier this year when he was described as “interim president”. He steadfastly said he was not interim.

She’s paid to write stuff

And there’s an article there (without wishing to comment on the content at all)

So, you can’t blame her

If we were slaying everyone, toward the top of the ladder and the base was underway, we wouldn’t be in the news

Our seemingly constant ineptitude is definitely newsworthy

Anyway most Melbourne supporters are going to be shredding the pow this weekend anyway, right?!? (I know I would be if I was in Melbourne still!) so who even cares?! 🕵🏻🤷😜😅🧐

Things I learnt from the article

  • Richardson is contracted to end of next year

  • Shand was at Monday's Board meeting

  • Pettyfor, appointed as Comms Executive, is taking up a dual role as head of football for AFLW including list management. The previous incumbent in that role also took up a role in the AFL FD

  • Williams is one of the highest paid development coaches in the league

  • Williams and Griffiths are out of contract at end of season

  • Our media boss was in charge of babysitting Clarry over 23/24 summer when he went off the rails. During that period Oliver was "undergoing direct and regular intervention from the AFL’s mental health team, league chiefs, AFLPA bosses and Pert."

No pressure on the new CEO, but the five month wait between hiring and starting (taking in almost the entire season) will leave people expecting that he's got some amazing super moves up his sleeve to make the wait worthwhile.

And this is why players from other clubs won't come to us, no stability, no proper training base, no consistency on field & we are a laughing stock

I think it is very healthy and wise to be sceptical of anything written in the media.

to my eye most of what was written was factual. It's clear the board have been a shambles for a while.

Not much by way of new insight i'll admit

probably one of the easiest articles Caro has had to write for a while.

Wasn't Shannon Byrnes our player welfare office and match day runner when we won a flag? Not sure what the issue is here.

The point is he's not here, the right candidate would have been well entrenched in the job.

Particularly given the importance of implementing the recommendations of the 2024 review.

Reporting mental health stuff like always a bit uneasy for me tbh

I think it's a bit of a nothing but the substance of the article is very concerning.

Yes and me either.

I don't get it. He's always maintained he's there until Smith takes over and that he doesn't have the time for the role. What's he taking exception to? The word 'interim'?

Have a listen to the interview he did on 3AW before the Gold Coast game in Round 3, available here:

https://www.3aw.com.au/what-the-melbourne-president-thought-of-simon-goodwins-comments-about-max-gawn/

Around 25 mins into the longer of the two clips. He gets introduced as interim president but tries to cut Tim Lane off to correct him that he’s not interim, he’s president for 12 months under a succession plan.

IIRC he did other radio interviews that day where he said the same thing.

I'm certainly not saying he is the right candidate and I'm well aware that 99% of readers on this site believe MFC/AFL takes precedence over everything. Just not sure if he dumped this world conference at this late stage, how good a look it would have been. Maybe that's back on the board for agreeing to it. Either way Duffy is suggesting he's on holiday so who knows WTF's going on.

I think it's more than a bit of nothing. By bringing up the runner-welfare duplication role Wilson show she enjoys putting the boot in regardless of relevance. In fact as I wrote above, you could well argue it is a good thing to combine the roles. But she implies the opposite just to sink the boot in.

That casts doubt on everything she says about anything, not just MFC. I'm not saying we are not in a mess etc, but as a general policy, I'd look at everything she says as liable to have been twisted or exaggerated to support whatever case she is making.

Geez, it's not hard to jump on the dissapointing Demons bandwagon after that loss last week.

If she was in a gang she'd be the first one in with the boots when someone goes down.

It reads to me like an example of slective writing, taking every opportunity to be negative. Balanced? [censored] off.

Brad Green is the President of the MFC last time I looked, sounds like Caro has spun it all together to show what a mess of a club we are after losing to Saints last week, AFL Media love to put the boots into us, knowing that our CEO is in transition, we are are an easy target. They know how to get up our skirts because we always react in the same way, even our more measured supporters have been worn down over time that is why I have disengaged from the media pack.

True but our management and Board has never been up to standard. Even when we had PJ the Board rejected his recommendation for the next CEO.

We're forever paying the price of being a former low priorityl offshoot of the MCC.

We all know we're going back to being a mid table team at best where we'll get excited about the mathematical chance of making finals.

Can't even do a Richmond as our stars are way overpaid.

On Guerra he's a speculative appointment at best given his non sports related history but the five month delay had flashing warning lights all over it when you combine it with the Chairman in waiting scenario

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
