You’re breaking records bluey with the number of dislikes. My record is 5 so you’ve blown me out of the water

I'm not always a huge fan of Gawn's media work, but I thought he was very good last night. That show probably suits him more than more serious formats.

That said, it was concerning that he couldn't come up with a couple of decent captaincy options from the current group. We clearly have a massive leadership void.

A great segment. Do yourself a favour and watch it. Max is a not only a great ruckman but a real entertainer. Funny and articulate - something special.

Apologies Chook, I’ve just realised I repeated some of your Gawn’s attributes.

Great minds think alike

No I don't. I hate company... unless its animals.

How dare you have a contra opinion?

Perhaps we can cite the lack of succession plan? Nope....don't go there!!

Maybe it is difficult to publicly anoint your replacement, probably will be decided by who is still standing when Max bows out. Rick is the obvious one but will depend on his ability to regain full confidence in his body. The players will have a big say in who leads them forward, we don’t know what level of leadership training the players are receiving but in a group of 40 players there will be 6-8 that see themselves as future leaders of the club. Unfortunately Angus Brayshaw was wiped out and no one has stepped into his void just yet.

Jakey Lever would make an outstanding captain

Any thoughts on how the club will transition a new ruckman into the team?

That really is the burning question jr we need to find a suitable applicant asap, we do not have a player on our list capable of holding down No.1 Ruck role and Maximus has such big shoes to fill.

A true leader and a genuine custodian of the sport and the Melbourne footy club.

With that [censored] Harley Reid seemingly ruling out “bottom 4” clubs, it speaks of his weak character. He seemingly wants to desperately come home, but only if the right club comes along.

Gawn is the antithesis of this. Probably could have left due to admitting Jamar playing good footy, hence keeping him out for long periods, but decided to crack in, dispose of the bad habits and work hard.

The grass isn’t always greener and Gawn is proof of this and was greatly rewarded.

Interesting that he mentioned Lever but not Trac who are both the same age. I guess the vibe is that Trac is either not seen as a leader or doesn’t want to be a leader of the MFC.

Should things not work out with Lever I wouldn’t sleep on Disco if he jumps up the leadership ranks over the next couple of years and establishes himself as a staple best 23 player.

Jeez, what's your childhood trauma?

Is this comment necessary?

Regardless of whether you agree with the comment or not and its fair to say we all disagree with Bluey on this one.. but to go down the personal route and say this, is really inappropriate.

You dont know what Bluey has experienced as a child and neither is it anyone's business especially if its deeply sensitive and triggering.

You being a high school teacher of all people should know better.

Agree

Shame Grundy didn't work, but there's no point 20/20 rear visioning

Wonder if Sean Darcy is available?

Genuine concern for your mental health, but also blocked because nobody needs that [censored]

I wouldn't read to much into Max's answer regarding next captain. He genuinely came across as having never thought about it, ummed and ahhd and spat out an obvious answer.

He'd also been peppered with 27 nonsense questions in a row.

Were you being serious? Nothing wrong with different opinions, but please not illogical ones. Do you think it's a good look whingeing about a teammate's verdict given the bias and potential backlash , and the fact that many e former players (and even Paddy Cripps) are much more effectively championing May's case for acquittal? How about Gawn's son? Don't make out Dad went out of his way to teach and coerce his son into singing the Carlton theme song. It's fluff that gets a quick, harmless laugh and not even remotely a black mark on Gawn. So what was illogical? Melbourne having any interaction with fans and viewers? The whole team not whipping themselves as per the villain in The Da Vinci Code? No!

And while I agree with concerns of you and @poita it is what it is. We lost Bradshaw. We almost lost Trac. The likes of May, Lever, Viney and Oliver are getting older and slower and well, the next captain choice hinges a lot of whether it happens in 2027 or 2029. If it's the latter every current player has at least 4 years under their belt and possibly a player from another team comes across and after 2 or 3 yrs is the unanimous choice for Max's replacement. Honestly you may as well be having big discussions with your spouse about which high school your newborn should be going to.

At the end he says he 'has his head on' 2 more years, 'maybe 3'. Earlier he refers to 290 as his last game, currently on 240, i.e. 2 years including (premiership-winning?!) finals and the occasional 'managed'?

So, we have him for 2026 and 2027. Then, maybe 2028 at a stretch.

Apologies if this has been mentioned, but Max chatting with Edie on Insta is priceless.

It's just an estimate. I'm sure at the end of some season he'll realise it's time. End of 27 or 28 is realistic. But like other old-timers he might go longer if his body and motivation are still strong.

Could absolutely do a Goldy and be a backup and ruck coach beyond his current contract, if he's willing

Just looked at the footage now. Hearing young George sing the Carlton team song made me spew all over my cornflakes.

That [censored] is never funny maxy. Parenting fail 101.

Relax, it's a reference to a quote from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
