Simon Goodwin, Melbourne coach (17.07.25)

Podcast Episode · SEN Breakfast · 16/07/2025 · 14m

Interesting interview.

Few points he made that pricked my ears

  • Off season focus will be adding more midfield talent to fit in with our transitioning game.

  • I think there will be another focus on adding forward talent and experience. Quote, "leaving no stone unturned" when I heard that my initial reaction was Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay.

  • Exposing talent. Spoke about the likes of Jeffo, Tholstrup, Lindsay, Langford continuing to get opportunities. Will look at maybe exposing more, but key focus is to also win and win well.

  • Spoke about continuing to work with Oliver and the work hes done on and off field. Focus has been building his capacity on field and has seen the growth on a weekly basis to then hopefully have a huge off season to get him back to his best.

  • Goes on weekly walks with Paul Guerra to discuss on where the club us at.

  • Incredibly disappointing about the 0-5 which puts club under pressure and challenges within the club. Proud of the club that its been able to work through those challenges over the last few weeks.

  • Found Adelaide the most challenging team we've come across this year.

  • Was asked about Judd McVee and Bayley Fritsch. Laughed about the Bayley Fritsch rumour. Said we need forwards and hes a valuable member of the team

  • Judd McVee is still working his way through his contract and negotiations. Said "we're hopeful Judd will sign on in the not too distant future". Didn't exactly sound all that confident. Sounded very similar to the Luke Jackson talk imo.

Thanks for the write up

I’m very curious how they’re going to square the circle of seemingly wanting to retain players like Clarry and Fritsch but then being on the hunt for midfield and forward half talent

Obviously Goody can’t come out and say that anyone is going to be traded but it’s difficult to get a read on just what the club is prepared to do to stay active this off season

This is based off my own gut feeling, but I think Fritsch will definitely stay and Oliver could potentially be shopped around.

When I thought about him saying that we're trying to evolve our midfield into a transitioning team, to me Oliver is the odd one out.

As you say, they're not going to come out and say we're not trading anyone out, but I think we're going to be ruthless this off season. And when you're ruthless, sometimes you have to give up quality to get something back in return.

Doesn't sound like it going by the above 'dazz'...

Weekly walks with the new CEO is the interesting point to me.

The conversations would be fascinating to hear.

Next Year’s Strategy is so important for this Club

Thanks Dazz. Saves me a listen.

Goody never gives much away but he’s always pretty easy to read and reliable regarding Player contracts and whether they’re staying or going. The Jackson comparison is spot on. In 2022 Goody went from being “extremely confident” to “hopeful” to “making the most of the time he has left with us” all in the space of a few months. That quote on McVee is very concerning. I reckon he’s gone for sure after reading that. Sounds like Fritta and Clarry will be there though.

I’d recommend listening, the Mcvee quote has a different context when you listen to what he says.

It’s more dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s

Feels like we are watching an election campaign, he is literally a politician, trying to remain in office by any means necessary.

Totally agree, he’s the best Spin Doctor in the AFL, talks a lot, without saying or doing anything

Every interview is exactly the same, next it will be we are on a journey and taking it one week at a time

Thanks for posting this Sir Why You Little, it was an interesting listen, Tim and Gary asked some good questions and I thought Goody responded as well as possible under the circumstances.

Glad I’m not the only one and I’m not being jaded. Every week is the same spiel and it’s exhausting.

In saying that, I do think we are slowly evolving, and making some changes, however I’m not sure when that plan hits its believed target.

I’m also not sure if Goody will be the one to continue to see it out, or if they can replace him with a fresh coach who can do that, and excite players again.

He has certainly bought himself some time. But he must be ready for serious scrutiny next Season

He has set a very high bar for next Season….

Interestingly, I attended the Crows game and the corporate lunch at the behest of my client the other week. Their Head of Footy spoke before the match and sounded word for word like Goody. "Trust in the process, one game at a time" etc etc

Seems like it's a prudent approach to keeping the lid on things at the club, rather than spin.

(So nice to see my first game in person this season!! Bizarre to have to bite my tongue and there were a few moments that the Crows supporters gave me a dirty look or two. They were good sports, though, and even clapped Lever off the field. Maybe in part because I said loudly "it's not like the Crows would want to boo an injured player" and clapped menacingly 😁)

Absolutely this. I stopped listening to him 18 months ago — figured if he ever said something interesting, it’d spark a club-wide review, an AFL Integrity Unit probe, land on the Commission’s agenda, get a mention in Parliament, and kick off a Royal Commission chaired by Kelli Underwhelming herself.

I love that he hasn’t hidden away this year

Probably his one positive, having said that, to move forward he still needs to go at seasons end!

I think they're making room in the cap as Goody takes on a "HR consultancy gig" with Haymes paint in the off season. 👍

Not at all, Goody 💯 deserves to see out his contract and the amount of disrespect he gets is a disgrace.

Wont argue with you, lets agree to differ! But happy to revisit depending on circumstances and or decisions made in the future!

Wish someone would ask him about his dreadful match day tactics. Vs GWS, Geelong & St Kilda supporters & commentators & everyone but the Brains Trust (sic) could see the problem.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
