Welcome to Demonland: Oscar Berry

Now that you are officially a Demon, Welcome aboard Oscar Berry, hope the memories come flooding back Aberfeldie B&F playing โ€œAussie Rulesโ€ junior football. 23yo 6โ€™4โ€, decent basketballer, educated, good pedigree ๐Ÿ˜, another 194cm player on the list, we were way to short in โ€œ22-23โ€. Thanks daisycutter๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

Not a beanpole and was on the development path (Western Jets) before heading off on his basketball scholarship.

One to watch

Letโ€™s give the guy a go.

I know, itโ€™s so much easier to write him off before he even arrives at the club, based purely on the fact that heโ€™s coming from a basketball background, but letโ€™s see how he goes.

He's a gun picked us over 5 clubs. Played footy til he was 16 so he has the skills you watch the next Harris Andrews!

205 lbs is equivalent to 92.986 kg. Certainly a frame to build an โ€˜AFLโ€™ ready body.

College basketball in the USA unlike the precious pretenders here, is able to give fans some idea about physical presence of an athlete.

You can still use the old non-metric scales, like the one for talls that goes from 'beanpole' to 'big lump of a lad'.

He's already been assessed as between 'chunky' and 'solidly built', which actually mean the same thing but also both mean different things depending on how much you like the person in question.

there is also a third one, wilson, younger than oscar, currently a punter at kentucky uni (but think he left for states much younger than oscar, so no u16 b&f)

He looks a big unit. Only 194cm but hopefully his athletic profile lets him play a bit taller

Hope it works, not had a lot of luck with this category, but atleast he is solidly built unlike some of the past types

you're just being deliberately obstreperous, bbb. you knew quite what the poster meant

and, i can assure you that young people (i.e. the juniors), do in fact refer to australian rules football generally, as "afl".

and those same kids dont go out into the street to play ICC or head down the courts to play NBA so it should be stamped out and corrected every time its spoken, although I confess I think its gone to far to be corrected

Sadly I've taken to saying AFL given half the time when I talk footy in Sydney people think I mean NRL... But the upside is that it is always a relief when I find someone who actually knows footy!

Have also started saying Melbourne Demons when asked for my team because people... feels wrong but it is efficient!

The best way to solve this problem is to eliminate the other codes so Australian Football can reign undisputed. At least in Australia.

I'd settle for just eliminating the Rugbies, then we can have Football and Soccer, which is simple enough.

In fact, in all circumstances, it is a good idea to eliminate rugby. Who loses from that, really? It's like banning smoking. Sure, some people will be cranky for about 8 weeks, but by week 10 everyone is winning.

I live in eternal optimism that if you throw enough darts at the board you will hit it eventually. Surely on the law of averages we are due for a hit. Smith finally cracked a best 23 spot just before he destroyed his career but I'm hoping for more from Berry. Earlier and better. We can but dream.

Cranky for eight weeks??? It takes a minimum of 10 weeks just to get to the point of not wanting to kill someone.

talking of kids and language, this gave me a chuckle

my mum texted, "What do IDK, LY, and TTYL mean"

Me: "I don't know, love you, talk to you later"

Mum: "Okay, I'll just ask your sister"

Aussie football is the game, AFL the body supposed to run it but instead try to ruin it

Footy = our game

Soccer obviously

Rugby (both) rename scrum ball

No idea why the American game gets called football when only one player ever kicks it, occasionally

I promise it'll be easier without any triggers around.

Plus, there should be a nationally supported sick leave entitlement for extra days off, called 'not murdering people leave'.

"I'm taking a homicide day" should already be a thing.

I do laugh when people say only 194, like theyโ€™re 200 cm themselves. Not saying youโ€™re meaning it like that but just generally find it a funny comment.

Giants really are a bizarre club.

Block the trade of this guy for no reason and then delist him.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
