6 May - aside from that shocking smothered kick howler early, he was prominent all game. Marked well and generally kicked well. Getting older though - no longer sprightly with ground balls.

5 T.Mac - as with May, our only chance of someone taking a clean mark and I can't remember any errant disposals. And anyone who thinks Lever should come in for him next week has rocks in their head. By contrast our third wheel down back Petty clearly should spend a long stint in the magoos.

4 Chandler - gees this guy has improved. Played left half back and is just so smart and puts his body on the line.

3 Bowey - got better as the game went on and continues his great start to the season.

2 Fritsch - has copped the blowtorch the past three weeks and clearly was our best forward all night. If it wasn't for the fact that he currently has the yips, then no-one would be knocking him.

1 Gawn - embarrassing early with a couple of huge howlers, but you have to give him credit for sticking at it and hopefully he played himself back into form, especially now that TC is injured and not an option to help him out.

3 - Pickett but wasteful

Tracc & Chin were more than handy, our bottom six really stunk it up.

6 May - with TMac was the difference between a defeat and a humiliation.

5 McDonald - definitely one of his better outings.

4 Gawn - still a true warrior even if the years may be starting to take a toll.

3 Chandler - for his sheer effort and gut-running all night.

2 Petracca - influential but still not the dominator of old.

1 Fritsch - some classy moments but sadly the radar is still astray.

Thats it

Gawn. 7 x one percenters. Team of 23 players had 30. His intensity and desire was miles ahead of his teammates.

5 clearances. 12 contested possessions.

Like all of us, I’d love to have been celebrating 4 points, but it was at least a comfort to see several of our ageing leaders showing the way.

My assessment:

  1. Gawn - Great to see our Skipper fight off adversity, and get back to some solid form. Work ethic was exemplary, and did lots of little things that often don’t get noticed (as borne out by his stats sheet shown by @spirit of norm smith above). Thanks Norm.

  1. May - The ‘dam wall’ would have broken much earlier if it hadn’t been for Maysie’s staunch defence. Great to have him back, and back in form.

  1. McDonald - Tommy wasn’t very far behind Maysie in deferring the inevitable last quarter breach in our once impenetrable defence.

3. Oliver - A fair way off where we know he can get to, but that just shows how good he is at his best. He’ll get there, I reckon.

  1. Chandler - Busted his gut all night, applied pressure and I don’t recall any significant errors. Our only season-on-season improver imo, and it’s mostly based around fitness, work rate and consistency.

  1. Langdon - Worked tirelessly as he always does, and disposal was ‘iffy’ at times, as it often is.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
