They would have been a very handy 4 points. We really ran out of legs in the last.

Delighted for the positive signs from our debutants. XL in particular looks fantastic.

Predictable result, but pretty happy with that as a first up hit out. First times looked good, especially XL.

Fritta would want that game back. Shocker

[censored] flat after that, deserved to win.

Lindsay had one of the best debuts I’ve seen from us in recent years. The stats look good but his football IQ is off the charts. Goes in super hard too which is unusual for his style normally. Gun.

Being a Dees supporter you knew the script but some great signs

Really missed May, McVee and Pickett. A step too far with all the injuries/unavailable. Sure, lots to be positive about, but a loss is a loss.

The 'Kids/Debs':

Goals:

  • 1 – Windsor
  • 1 – Roo
  • 1 – Sharp
  • 2 – Jeffo
  • 1 – Henderson
  • 1 – AJ

Lindsay:   D: 22,  T: 6, Eff: 81.2%

Langford:  Not on field for long.

I said earlier in the week if we lost it wouldn't be for the kids/debs.  In fact they kept us int he game.

They did their job superbly.

Our skills and pace are still the bane of our existence. Until we fix those two it'll be hard to expect a great season. Fought well today.

I thought we were the better side all game. GWS did have many chances late - that they squandered. Result is what it is. We played a lot of debut players, and, didn’t run the game out. Only so much fitness you can get into players not in the system.

Yea. I think Kozzie played his part too.

But some great positives from some new faces

Kozzi?

A few may being deleting some old comments re Jeffo! Didn't have a stack of it but a strong debut

We SHOULD have won that, but sadly that’s not how the points are awarded.

We had our chances, and they took theirs. Giants are a seriously good team.

Pretty gutted to start the season with another one that got away, but I’m proud of the boys today, great first outing and particularly so from the debutants.

Bright future ahead 💙❤️

Really disappointing result, but I thought it was promising signs. Our contested game looks sharp, pressure was good, Trac back to his best. The first gamers all added something. Lindsay is clearly already a gun.

Going to be a fun ride this year I think.

Thanks for the positive post Nasher. I needed it.

It's just the way it went down.

Kind of like we knew it would happen for some strange reason.

But yea some good signs against a very very good team

He’s on notice now. Need a rocket. Love him, but looks lazy. When he delivers it looks silky and classy, but if he’s struggling…

Couple of really good efforts on the members wing though that set up our final shot. But he just doesn't seem to have the core strength to win a ground ball.

we would only have 6 goals without the newbies!

crazy

Im gutted but considering a third of our team are the new, the effort and team work was outstanding

Not sure what’s happened to Fritsch over summer. As someone who’s watched the match sim, practice match and Round 1 in their entirety, I don’t remember him even having a moment. Worrying signs.

That was a good effort, disciplined the way we set up players in sync preventing there run for most of the day.
Could have gone either way but plenty of positives other then 4 points lost taken from today.

Some should look for positives because plenty of the usual suspects nothing but negativity on the game day thread FFS

Oh Bowey only 2 tackles - he was very good all day

Rooey running under the footy- Sam Taylor had zero impact and was unable to create rebound because of this.

On to next week

Max Gawn needs to develop a banana kick, he misses too many of those 15-20 m with an angle. You just can't miss those opportunities and he misses many of those.

The Demon stalwart surpassed the number of his father's appearances for the club towards the end of the season. As he approaches his thirties, his pace is inevitably slowing, and he is likely to explore alternative opportunities beyond the team's midfield.

The Demon premiership defender who has the reputation the master of intercept possessions as well as great leadership qualities managed only eight senior games this season as he battled injury and form, prompting speculation that he might be enticed to look elsewhere.

“Disco” took his time (four seasons) but the mid-season draftee has been a shining light of Melbourne's campaign, improving to become a versatile option at either end of the ground. He has great marking skills which allows him to play as a marking target up forward or an intercepting defender down back.

The skipper delivered another outstanding season, leading the team from the front, participating in every game, and earning club champion honours, while also securing an equal record eighth All-Australian blazer as a ruckman.  Max Gawn is arguably the greatest exponent of ruck skills in the history of the game; an exceptional leader who has guided the club to a premiership, through the challenging times that followed, and now into the next phase of its storied history.

It was a frustrating season for the former number 13 draft selection, who failed to build momentum in his second campaign; Tholstrup played only nine games, having been omitted twice and substituted out three times. However, he demonstrated promising signs in the midfield at Casey towards the end of the season, and big things are anticipated from him in the coming years.
