but how awful would it  be to support Norf? They are going nowhere.

They’ve got a young list. Some gems in there though. They’ll be a good side in 2 years, possibly earlier.

Adams showed some really well timed spoils (has good closing speed). Gave away a silly fifty. He was only noticeably beaten once that I saw. I think he will develop further this year as the key back at VFL but did not look out of p[lace today.

Agree - I think he's probably jumped ahead of Marty Hore - play slightly different roles, but I think Adams offers more.

I've read two comments indicating Harvey Langford may lack pace. I'm a wrap for Harvey but is this a genuine concern or about adjusting to a quicker pace?

Nope

Wouldn't mind seeing some crossover between WCW and AFL. Maynard and Moore could tag team as the Deadly duo using the Flying Mare and The back attack to terrorise the opposition. Jack Little as AFL Media Director would be on hand to issue a firm WOW! to help promote AFL betting agencies.

Long-arze post but I REALLY wanna share this since it was so special…

During the break between matches I met a lovely family: a mum and dad, their son and daughter, and a grandmother. We were chatting (they were sooo nice and in particular, gentle and chill) and I noticed the mum (Nina) wasn’t wearing a hat. I happened to be holding a wide-brimmed Dees straw hat that I brought in case anyone in the DA needed it so I asked Nina would she like to wear it. She said “No thank you, I’m fine, but Nan might want to.” Nan definitely took up the offer and she looked so bloody cute in it (very wide hat on a very small person) so I said she could keep it if she liked and she indeed liked. She was so pleased and was super grateful.

Anyways I asked if they actually do go for Melbourne (since they weren’t in footy colours) and they said yes they definitely do. I asked if they were there to watch the match in general or if there was a particular player/s they’d come to watch (there were friends and relatives of some of the Casey boys there) and Nina said, “Yes, we’re here for Ricky.” I blurted out, “Oh I love Ricky! He’s an awesome kid!” which amused them greatly. I asked if they know him personally/well and it turns out it was his mum and dad and brother and sister and of course his beautiful Nan wearing my (now hers) enormous straw hat 🥹

They are absolutely delighted with how the club has embraced Ricky and the respect they’re shown. Ricky Snr and I had a simpatico conversation about Culture Shmulture and geez how I wish the media would do a story about this family and how they regard the Club. (Yeah, we all know this would NEVER happen.)

R snr spoke highly of everyone but the most beautiful words he had were reserved for his children. He said his two older sons (big age gap between them and Ricky) are Ricky’s biggest fans. They’ve encouraged and supported Ricky and loved him from the day he was born. They both play rugby and basketball and despite Ricky being “probably better at basketball than footy” they haven’t nudged him in that direction rather they’ve got his back no matter what he chooses.

Then R Snr asked me what I think of Ricky and I told him the truth, that Ricky is a sweet kid, he’s polite and very respectful and listens and remembers things he’s told and that he’s becoming a little bit cheeky as time goes on but only when training is done and the other young guys love it coz he’s pretty funny. R Snr was genuinely moved by this. He and Nina said it was good to hear the opinion of their boy from a fan. We all hugged it out and I asked if they could adopt me into the family and we all laughed but Nan quietly said “Yes, of course.” Stop it now 🥹

Report of the day Gw. Lots more please!

He's a bust unfortunately. Haven't seen anything in two years to indicate he is anything more than Weed 2.0.

You will regret that statement.

He is developing as space and will have some days when he will only have 6/8 possessions and 3/4 goals and a couple of assists. Never hoping to be a high possessions winner but good value for the cones he gets.

Remember my take vs yours.!!!

Happy for you to book mark this page and let's revisit it in five years after he's traded or delisted.

Depends on whether you rupture it completely or just strain it. Three weeks all the way up to half a season.

You're an absolute gem and a credit to our club GW.

Such a lovely story.

Have they come down from Alice? And are they from Arrente country up there?

It's so important our club looks after these young kids and creates an atmosphere and culture that has them thriving and hopefully wanting to stick fat with us.

One of the positives of the day was Tom Campbell. Held his own against one of last year’s best ruckman in the AFL in Xerri. Also showed unexpectedly competent skills for a ruck, highlighted by some quality set shots at goal.

It’s reassuring to know that if Max has a niggle, we can rest him with the knowledge that we have a secondary ruckman that will be competitive. We’re (touch wood) clearly not having a repeat of the Freo debacle last year when the game was over before it started re: conceding hit out and clearance dominance.

Lastly, sounds like he’s has a great pre season, looks fit for his age and by all reports is a cracking bloke.

I sat next to Jeffo’s Mum & Aunty yesterday . His Dad was up close & personal with his camera following his son. Really lovely people ..nervous ..proud..excited. I loathe these types of comments ..where you write off young players so early in their careers. In conditions not favouring tall forwards he def showed some promising signs. I’ll also bookmark your comments,

He walked happily in the Midsumma parade with BBB, Hester and the Ruby Demons.  He seems like a really nice bloke from the little I've had to do with him.   He looks strong and fit.

I feel many of the Jeffo non-believers had already made up their minds the day he got drafted………

………then you have @picket fence

May the force be with you!

I reckon that was Jeffo's first ever pre-season game in the 1's against AFL opposition, in previous years he's been in the VFL squad

Our club fosters the development of the indigenous boys in a way that ensures they are understood and made to feel like they don’t have to conform to something they’re not. At the heart of this is an amazing and dedicated person who quietly goes above and beyond and that’s Matty Whelan.

Wheels is the one who’s a gem and a credit to the Club. He was there yesterday checking in on the Mentha family, making sure they were fine. At one such time I told him he can relax coz I’ve got this  😅Nan had her Dees straw hat so all was good in the world. 😁

Before I  knew who they were I thought they lived in Melbourne because Nina (Ricky’s mum) said they left at 9am to come to Arden St. I didn’t know she meant they left their hotel at 9am. So yeah, they flew in on Friday from Alice.

PS the fam eventually caved and moved back from the boundary fence to the shade during the match. I playfully teased them about not being able to handle the heat as well as I could despite them coming from Alice. But they got the last laugh because no amount of sunscreen was ever gonna prevent sunburn and incidentally who the hell thinks to put sunscreen on their forehead when they’re wearing a baseball cap?! 🤨

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
