Footballing wilderness? We had one year out of the 8 and still had 11 wins… after what I witnessed from 2008-2013 that wilderness is quite tranquil

A nice feel good media snippet. I feel the same optimism.

The Melbourne Football Club has been a huge disappointment since we won the flag in 2021. We’ve had a very good list, who have underperformed due to (well we all know but we can’t say on this chat group). Plus we lost Brayshaw due to a total thug act and Petracca for some time to another thug act which has been glossed over. The same player did it again soon after. A huge man kneeing you in the lower ribs/spleen area is bound to result in a splenic injury. There is a duty of care and that was lacking. A lack of discipline has been very evident. This includes alleged off field behaviour by several players and the coach and also by Pickett on field. We’ve missed our chance at more premierships with a cohesive disciplined group of players. Which we don’t have. But we could have. The leadership of the club and the individual responsibility of the players and coach have been lacking in the extreme. To now say everything will be rosy this year is incomprehensible. And total nonsense.

2018-2013?

Luxury. Sheer luxury.

Try 1975 to 1987.

Now that's football wilderness.

I was born in 1987…. Maybe I turned the tides?

I'll see your 1975 and raise you by ten to 1965, the year I started following Melbourne.

Wilderness looks even more wilderness-y from the oasis of 6 premierships in the first 11 years of one's life.

As to the OP news piece; aren't they clever how they turn a piece about a player and his game into being about coach, club and other players. Skill.

And on a footy calendar as Mr September hopefully. By the way, where can I get one? Asking for a friend

The end of 76 was fun… so close. Yes it was disappointing in the end I admit,  but I think for a true definition of wilderness you have to start at 77.

I don’t know. Clue please.

Not being a smartarze, I genuinely don’t know.

Who said everything will be rosy?

Also, ANY club (ie. not just us) saying everything will be rosy is incomprehensible and total nonsense.

“… and also Pickett on field.” Are you [censored] serious??? You describe Moore’s action which could’ve killed Tracc as “a thug act” and rightly so. But when it comes to the reason for Kozzie’s suspension, Moore’s magically no longer a thug???!!

Huh? So, we do have, or don’t have???

1000% agree. Moore slid. Pickett should be free to play. Absolute rubbish.

That's how bad we were - there were mutiple tides to turn!

This might be sacrilege but the AFL helped turn the tide by ending zoning and introducing the draft.  When did the salary cap come in?

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
