It was another non-selection special adding to some of the baffling match committee decisions we’ve seen over the past three seasons.

Could not disagree more

You don't select players who don't deserve a call up.

Ever.

yep… but it leaves an even bigger question mark around spargo in round 1 doesn’t it.

You can’t make that argument about the MFC having selection integrity when Petty was as useful as an empty bag of chips that floats around the third level of the Warne Stand for the whole season, and not once was he dropped.

when Goodwin put a line through him last season

To be honest, this shocked me. Goodwin is generally cautious in press conferences. His comments weren't direct - he didn't say Fullarton's name - but his meaning was very clear.

I was quite excited to get him at the start of last year, simply because I thought we needed someone capable of playing forward and at least breaking even in the ruck. I thought he would be a solid upgrade on Schache. Goodwin made it sound like he was nothing of the sort. And by that stage of the season, and with our injuries the way we were, nobody would have cared that we were experimenting. It was damning that he didn't get a game.

Jeffo has more natural ability

AJ has more campaigner

Leaves Fullarton in limbo and to spend his twilight years at Casey

Sam Weideman and Josh Schache arguably had more ability than any of them

That alone isn’t enough to make it sometimes

2025 is possibly make or break for as an AFL listed player it’s all up to to him now

Surely absolutely not possibly.

Keeping in mind that we still needed Petty in the side to help out JVR in the ruck, what was the alternative?

Don't say Jefferson (not ready), Fullarton (cant ruck, and offers less around the ground than Petty) or Schache (goes without saying?), cause none of them were even close to being viable options last season.

Tom has obviously been in the gym since the end of last season, as he is now massive. His upper body has transformed.

It’s up to Tom in 2025 obviously, as it probably is a make or break year for him.

Always striving to stay glass half full

If he's to make it, I think it will be as a key position player.

He's not a ruckman.

Seems to have good hands and a bit of agility, just no ruck craft.

He will have to learn to be capable in the ruck, because he isn’t taking JVR or Turners spot. But agree

We did pay for him. A late third round draft (albeit a cheap commodity), salary, a list spot and club resources. He isn't playing for free.

I never thought he would be a pure ruck but it's easy to see why other supporters think he is when our own website has him listed as one.

I have no idea why he had such a stinker of a season. His stats and history suggested that he could play at AFL level.

I'm predicting he gets played on defence at Casey at some stage this year.

Fingers crossed he is able to turn it around this year.

Maybe May, Petty, Tommy or Ricks spot...

A 200cm ex basketball er, professional footballer, can’t jump up and tap the ball?

Come on.

Could he play CHB in VFL and be a backup tall back? His height would help vs a Harry McKay, King bros. Darcy etc in time. Still young enough to play 60-100 games by age 31-32.

Possibly.

Is this bloke going to get a go forward in the seniors this week or in the next month?

Or has he been put on the blacklist for delisting and might be given the token game at the end of the season when it's too late if he's lucky? (Goodys press conference writing him off as a ruck man might point to this)

Are we watching a story unfold in real time that In a few yers time, will we look back on as more signs of the bad culture of Goody playing favourites at selection?

Club have released a video of his VFL highlights last week, often done before a player is included. I reckon he plays this week.

The poor guy. Much easier to step into a team that's travelling well and you've been practising the role expected of you. What would the expectations be on a first gamer currently?

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
