When he took his 4th AFL game by the scruff of its neck with 3 final-quarter goals, I thought this kid could be anything.

    At the end of the season, I would have handed the Captaincy to Petracca and let Gawn focus on footy.

    That, obviously, has been blown out of the water and leaves a big hole that the club would have expected to be filled by Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw and ANB.

    The obvious void is a very specific, Gus shaped, one.

    Iโ€™m on record as saying Lever needs to worry about his footy more than his leadership, heโ€™s treading a fine line between being useful and a liability.

    Iโ€™m not sure Rivers needs the pressure of leading others, heโ€™s had some flashy games recently but has a decent way to go before he cements a midfield role, let alone a leadership position.

    I think the cupboard is quite bare between Max/May and the rest

    I acknowledge however he looks like a leader on game day in the backline with the way he works with Lever to hold the structure together (whether that is valued or loathed by the club and his teammates I am unsureโ€ฆ guessing a bit from column A and a bit from column B though).

    Thinking about it more, I think his quarreling with Lever is over the top and probably a distraction on field for the younger blokes

    I am certain Troy Chaplain would have made moves to eradicate this if he felt what you are intimating.

    Yes in most team situations you would think it would be disruptive to the backline boys but I think it only is when something goes wrong so there is a genuine reason for some โ€œcollaborationโ€.ย 

    I canโ€™t say I have visually seen it live or really had it ย bought ย to attention on TV by commentators so your worries seem to be needless. They compare it to a husband and wife arguing in the kitchen!!!ย

    Under your criteria NO ONE will be fit to leadership duties at our Club.ย 

    Some players are leaders and your worry that say Lever has to be too concerned with his own play is over blown. Joe knows if he makes an error and he speaks quite authoritatively at pressers. He IMO could be a Captain. And how is Riv going to get experience if not encouraged in this fashion yo become a leader. He has already adopted better than your opinion by the Club and commentators plus experts this season to his role in the midfield. Sure he is not the finished product but generally is performing well.ย 

    Look for what players have as attributes not what you see only they donโ€™t. Faith in ability is a rewarding thing in Clubland. It creates positivity and spirit that helps breed success.ย

    Agree, if Chandler gets a game on his lackluster season just gone he will be playing magoos! As for notion of Captaincy?? Give the humour a miss!

    I think bringing in Nathan Jones allows Viney and the rest of the mids to fall under his tutelage/leadership and focus more on pure footy

    Gawn should keep the captaincy for as long as he wants. Nick Maxwell was a dud compared to past captains and did extremely well controlling a team with the [censored] likes of Didak, Shaw, Swan and Johnson.

    Gawn is very much this style of leader and is 5x the player AND he still has at least 2 years of top level football left I reckon and any following years would see him taper off but still be an important contributor.

    As long as he feels he can no longer mentally lead (or god forbid get injured and force early retirement), then the likes of McVee has a lot of time to further grow into the role should it arise.ย

    I think that our backline is well lead, Gus often referred to it as the Menโ€™s department with much pride and it has been our strongest suite since 2020, the loss of Gus has hurt us much more than a lot realised and we now need a couple of Rivers, Judd, Bowey or Howes to step up and help fill the Gus void.ย

    Agree with Ted and you DubDee, I would pencil Roo in as a potential Captain and I also think that Trent Rivers oozes leadership it just needs to be channeled, this new leadership development team that the club are bringing in will unearth and develop 4-6 new leaders that already exist within our group. Remember ANB as soon as he was bought into the leadership group his game went up several notches and continued to improve right up until his last game with us. With an ounce of luck we will bring in another this draft.

    Steven May is a former co-captain at the Suns of course. Jake Lever has that uncertain je ne sais quoi quality about him. Must be the iconic moustache. No problems channeling Captain Peacock or was it Group Captain Lionel Mandrake from Stanley Kubrick's darkly prophetic movie? Keep it hisute, Max the Beard to be succeeded by Captain Rick.

    As others have stated I can see leadership in JVR and wouldnโ€™t mind if he was brought into the leadership group as early as this season. He leads by example and brings a great positive energy. Would be great for him to learn of our current leaders and provide a good link to the younger players.ย

    Beyond that Iโ€™m not too sure whatโ€™s there. I could see the Kolt standing up once he goes up a level or two but Iโ€™m not sure we have many younger player that are born leaders.ย

    I think that leadership qualities is something we should be looking for with our top 10 picks this year.ย

    I'd like to see Kozzie in the leadership group. Has the ability to impact games and lift the team, and has matured quickly as a dad given his young age.

    I'm with you on this. I think it would assist his game, ย and bring a different perspective to leadership. I think he is generally underrated with regard to his strength of character.

      ๏ปฟA hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.ย  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the โ€œFuchsias.โ€ They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturdayโ€™s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach inย Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but Iโ€™ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation.       Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.       The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourneโ€™s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle.ย As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nationโ€™s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.ย
