Started well, he had the skills, just not the mental drive to use them at the AFL level.  

 

 

 

Heard that Weid may be going back to where it all started by playing for Vermont in the EFL next year.

 

It is all in his head, just needs someone to "poke the bear".

He'd love that one back JT no doubt, just to tame to play even at state league level let alone at the top level.

Would’ve just kept Schache if we had any interest in a back-up back-up forward. Check out their career stats below (for full stats, see the link), basically the same player (height and weight(ish) included):

That moment broke him. He wept in the change rooms, and the broadcaster chose to put cameras on him. Was a vile decision from them to add public humiliation on top of the personal misery of a young kid still trying to find his feet in the game. He never found the confidence to bounce back from that.

I thought about this yesterday actually.

It can make some players but it can certainly break some and understandably so.

Sport at the highest level is all about bouncing back from adversity. Many a player has made a mistake which has cost a team a win. If that moment defined Sam's career, then he obviously wasn't cut out for high level sport.

You can't blame the media for broadcasting a player's emotions.

The only major discrepancy worth noting is the hitouts. Despite that, Schache seemed to be suggested as a ruck/forward option far more regularly than Weideman.

As I wrote in my initial post, it would have been interesting to see him in the ruck/forward role after Jackson. This would have obviously been a significant downgrade on ruck talent but I think it may have been beneficial to Weideman to have been forced into the contest. I think that’s the only grounds for him being considered. I agree there’s no point him being considered as a KPF alone. But with Tomlinson, KFW, and Schache off the list I think there is a small case to be made for Weideman.

Whether Weideman would even want to be on a rookie contract is another issue.

I totally agree that the moment on the field itself shouldn’t be enough to deter a would-be professional athlete.

Don’t know if you can recall the broadcast, but it was a very intrusive shot through a window, into an area where he probably thought he had a degree of privacy. I was quite struck by it at the time, as it is rare to see such a thing after a match. Particularly when it isn’t a high profile player. 

Good luck to him - I actually think he could play a role at Casey, he always seemed to go ok, and Casey has not had a great couple of years. Have wondered about him as a defender. Not sure how to explain it but I still think he has more to offer than Josh, I'd also have him as a pure back up ruck even if undersized I felt like he did ok rucking.

It's funny you should say that, the one knock on JVR is he's not always a one grabber (though much better than weed in that regard - and i reckon having to ruck is a factor as he'soften gassed)

Hello Steve the Man Jordan, aka Jimmy Gadson, aka middle aged  Demon.

Weed delisted, and likely stranded on 76 AFL games (can't see another club picking him up, though stranger things have happened).

Meanwhile, my boy Omac, keeps keeping on, and with a bit of luck with injury will play his 100th game of AFL footy next season.

I beg to differ, I saw a change in JVR's marking in '24, is one of my season positives, he is much more a 'one grabber' now than before R6. I reckon he added 30-40% to his value with the improvement in his hands (BTW I know we are in furious agreement on how he is tracking as a young fwd).

Fair call, he Waa clunking them better, which suggests it's not a technique thing.

I predict after another preseason the days of jvr being underrated will be well gone.

If Jefferson can fulfil his potential (which would free up petts to go back or play as a swingman) talk of needing to bring in another key forward will also be gone.

Sam had that awesome elim final against Geelong. I'll always remember him for that mark over Blicavs in the first and the look of shock on Blicavs face. I was there that night with 95k people and reckon I've watched the highlights a minimum of 50 times 

This is how I will choose to remember him.

In the draft there was supposedly 3 of the best young talls in a while, all pundits, commentators etc agreed,  Josh Schache, Aaron Francis and Sam Weideman, all 3 went top 10, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Interestingly the knock on all 3 is aggression, perhaps the game evolved too quickly for them.

I thought the same thing myself when I walked our Swiss Shepherd past Box Hill Oval this evening. I watched him play a fantastic Casey match in 2017 or so. He kicked 6, 5 before halftime, and he marked everything in sight. A friend of mine—a Lions supporter—has known Sam since he was a junior footballer, and he always spoke very, very highly of him. 

Clearly a nice fella, and we all wish him the best of luck.

But perhaps time to close this thread?

I wouldn't mind seeing him back. The guy had so much potential.

Yes I often thought the same, needed Mr May or someone to thump him on the way out the race,  nice bloke, nice skills but never got angry enough,
