Hopefully he doesn't!

It's hard to understand the critics of this decision. We were exposed last year with no credible ruck back up when Max was injured, but no ruckman with ambitions of regular AFL matches is going to join us behind Max after ther Grundy experience.

Tom Campbell is the perfect depth bridge to a long-term Max replacement. Hopefully we rate Dodson in this year’s draft and can position to take him. That would be an ideal outcome.

Max has just re-signed for 3 years (he will be 35 then)

No quality ruckman wants to be drafted to sit behind Max for 3 years on the off chance he gets injured.

It's going to take at least a year, probably two, before a drafted ruckman is ready for AFL. How many ruckmen successfully carry the #1 mantle in their first two seasons?

By season three in 2027 the transition will be in full swing, a draftee this year will turn 21 then. This is the perfect time to do it, it's too late doing it in the 2026 draft.

It all depends on if we rate Dodson though.

Agree with that . Was really referring to a Campbell type that will have to sit in line behind Max for 3 years.

Destination club!!

In the same way a retirement home is sought after real estate I guess.

It’s pragmatic but boy it’s unremarkable

Agree. I think the pick 25 from the Crows should be used on Dodson if he’s available.   Serves apprenticeship over first two years.  Wait and see.

We have way too many holes to be using valuable picks on rucks unless they are huge standouts

Develop up rookies and hope you get a good one.

If not, there will always be someone when needed

Fair enough. But strong rucks are hard to find and you don’t want to be left with a Soldo type as your messiah.

Brisbane seemed to cope ok with a second string ruck in the GF

Unless they are taking contested marks regularly and kicking goals their influence can be overstated imo

Rucks don't matter, unless they're a total difference maker eg. Gawn.

A battler who competes hard would be fine, and they aren't that hard to find.

In - Campbell

Out - Clarry, Kozzie.

Probably tips the scales our way.

Don't forget Owies in and Trac out.

Real winners of trade week right there.

Staggered why they don’t look at this 25 year old option from Southport who has played in 2 x VFL Grand Finals still with upside and mature enough back-up. Surprisingly a very good kick and had an awesome first half v Werribee in this years Grand Final.
8 yrs younger than Campbell!

Nothing against this. With Fullerton and Verrell still seemingly miles off selection (we choose to play Petty as a key ruck before them for goodness sake), Campbell seems a low risk high reward recruit.

Welcome TC.

Very highly rated as a person, I wonder if he's in a semi ruck coaching role with Verrall, Fullarton etc. while offering the big body Max needs to train against, plus offers a break glass in case of emergency option.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
