Maybe we can trade Fritsch, pick up Owies to do that job for cheaper and use the bulk of the draft picks leftover to go get a proper 2 way forward.

Let's compare some key stats Owies and Fritsch in 2024. I'll throw Kade Chandler in there too.

  • Kade Chandler: 12.4 disposals, 3.1 marks, 0.8 goals, 4.1 tackles, 20.1 pressure acts
  • Bayley Fritsch: 9.5 disposals, 3.4 marks, 1.8 goals, 1.2 tackles, 8.3 pressure acts
  • Matt Owies: 8.7 disposals, 2.9 marks, 1.4 goals, 2.3 tackles, 12.1 pressure acts

Owies is right in the middle. Less goals than Fritsch but more pressure. More goals than Chandler but far less pressure.

I would keep Fritsch every day of the week and ignore Owies.

Of all positions on the ground, I think that small forwards would have the highest strike rate of being immediately impactful at AFL level after being drafted. Use a pick rather than trading one for Owies.

I think McAdam plays more like a medium pack marking forward than a small crumbing type. Only averages 1 mark on the lead per game over his career. For reference too, he was number 1 for us this year, albeit in only 3 games, for average tackles inside 50.

Owies averaged a 1 mark on the lead every 2 games this year. He's not a leading player either. In terms of pressure, this year Owies averaged more pressure acts than the following Demons in similarish positions - Laurie (tbf was sub a few times), Billings, Hunter, Fritsch, Spargo, Melksham. It's not as bad as is being made out in my view, plus surely we have more of a focus on attack and scoring next year?

Yeah but Schache and Spargo were tied at no.4 in that stat so it's not the most reliable reference. Not saying it's wrong but just not enough data.

In the few times I've seen Owies closely I thought he did make pressure acts but it's sounding like that's not his forte. If we're going to bring in another small forward then I want elite ability in one of these areas:

- Speed

- Defensive pressure

- Ground work and crumbing

- Goal sense and ability to split the sticks out of half chances regularly

Any less than these isn't worth chasing IMO as we have enough 'nearly men' in our small forward stocks. As mentioned you guys have probably watched him a bit closer so if you think he can help with one of these then maybe it is worth it at the right price, just treading with caution

Huge and unnecessary risk imo

Get our system entering F50 fixed and Fritta will pay us back in spades

With Mitch White leaving we aren’t going to have anyone to kick to him

Reminds me of the 'he gets on base' scene in Moneyball.
I don't particularly like watching Owies go about his football, but he kicks goals.

Ok so you think Fritta is playing at Casey ?

If you think that much of him and others share your opinion then we won’t get anything for him in terms of draft picks

Not sure your logic is that sound on this one

I've lost a lot of interest in Owies since learning the correct pronunciation of his name. Before that, I would keenly seek out Carlton's weekly injury list to see if he was featured just for a bit of a chuckle.

I see you’re clearly not familiar with DeeSpencer’s work on Fritsch.

I hear what you're saying, but I guess my interest in going for Owies is a microcosm of what I want from our style next year. I want less 'contest and defence' and more attacking footy and scoring. I think we have plenty of defensive players and pressure players and Owies, while not great, isn't terrible in those areas so it's not enough of a detriment to put me off.

More cutting edge in front of goal, I see what you mean.

I had thought he’d be great if we could contain all our injuries within him, but if his name isn’t quite that, I’m worried the lygon mafia will consider whatever pick given will never be enough. Don’t want such a debt hanging over us

No

Hes a little smart ar#e & not very good, haven’t we got McCadam, Chandler, Kozzie & Spargo for this

We had Bedford the best out of the lot of them a couple of years ago and let him go

Please don’t go down this path again getting C grade players

I tend to ignore people that are overly negative these days

The reality is Fritta would be a walk up start and welcome addition to almost every team in the competition

We can be overly harsh on our own only for that look questionable after the fact

Seen many posters have crazy revisionism with Bedford since his trade. But he could not hold down a spot in the 22 when he was in this team.

Bedford was still a developing player who wasn't given the opportunity to solidify a place in the team. From what he showed at Casey, he always had far more upside than Spargo. Unfortunately Goodwin liked to stick fat with the 2021 Premiership players regardless of form, instead of grooming the next crop. We are paying the price for that now.

He is a big cheat for free kicks that lead to many of his goals.

Think that’s a bit of a misnomer based on stats. Average frees for per game below;

K Pickett - 0.6 per game

Owies - 0.8 per game

Ginnivan - 1.1 per game

4 players with AFL debuts last year, 5 this year.

Yeah this is the exact revisionism I was talking about. Bedford has had a very similar year to Chandler, nothing exceptional.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
