This is fantastic news once rubber stamped. A generation of young demons will worship this guy for the next decade..

I only hope we have a clause that incase something like Gus happens we are protected.

No, no, I think it's a great idea because he's torn up so many games playing in the middle with 30 plus possessions and a beacon of consistency.

Let's make sure we throw every last bit of our cap at Kozzie and make it the least team friendly contract possible. We dont need a key forward or any other pieces You said it yourself we'll be bursting at the seems with nothing left for anyone else. There is nothing risky about it at all and no-one will be annoyed when he misses games with his token suspensions.

My take is what it is, don't let it spoil the mood. I couldn't give a stuff anymore and if people don't like the lack of pom-pom flogging and feel good [censored] then I obviously don't belong here anymore.

You definitely belong around here layzie. I am going to join you in the minority, I am wrapped that it looks like Kozzie is going to sign on. He is our most important player in my opinion and I am not so worried about how much we pay him but the length of the contract is crazy. Our list management team seem very happy doing this I am not such a fan, but that’s just my two cents.

As long as we pay the man who cares hey!

And anyone who dares to think sinking a king's ransom into a small forward is risky is clearly off their head.

He’s more than just a player like Oliver and Petracca. He’s a marketers dream and yes we haven’t been the best at that but losing him would make us look very foolish. You gotta pay what the market dictates and if he gives us 9 more years of service I reckon we’ll all be happy.

Go back to pre season and I don't think anyone at the club would've put any money on Kozzie staying. Keeping him last year was a desperate way for us to salvage the off season.

To then keep him now and long term is a serious credit to everyone at the club and credit to the culture. No way you can keep an unhappy player in a culturally different environment away from their family without showing them the love and support that we have shown Kozzie.

Well done Melbourne

You belong here more than many other posters, Layz 💕

Just a point on us. All of you people on this site are reasons why a player and person of his calibre wants to stay here. This is on top and additional to the biggest component reason why he would stay. There is no other Club like this club for all the peace of mind and high standards of a club where companionship and safety are paramount.

Try not to get down layzie, it’s natural to look at the pro’s and con’s of holding onto a like Kozzie, my first thought was that is a hell of a lot of coin and 9 years wow a lot can go wrong but Kozzie is a generational player. He is a one of a kind, he can turn a game off his own boot, he is loved by the playing group, coaches and supporters. Losing Jackson hurt us badly and we can’t afford to lose Kozzie when he is blossoming into an outright star of the game. Try to put your concerns aside and join in the celebrations if this comes off.😁👍

forward / mids who have the skills around goal and to play through midfield like koz are once in a generation players

imo he will finish his career with a better record than cyril rioli

Am I the only one not a fan of this massive long deal? 100% sign him up, but for 7 years?? [censored] that is asking for trouble

The long-term contacts allow the clubs to spread the money and pay more or less at different times. I understand the risk but it also gives the club the chance to balance the books

I'm apprehensive about very long performing contracts.

The player/performer/artists life often changes when they know money's rolling in for years and they often loose incentive to perform as brilliantly and risk all to be incredible.

Yep - Koz is box office.

That goal he kicked of the ground from 45 was lucky, but genius makes its own luck. It was yet another jaw drop moment he's given us.

He's just so great to watch - and surely that's should be a massive factor in his salary.

That and the fact he's arguably our best kick, certainly most reliably accurate goal kicker, best mid and best forward.

When I heard Buddy Franklin was getting 9 years - I was strongly of the opinion it would bite the swans. But it didn’t.

I’m not sure where I heard it - might have been on the Demonland podcast - but it’s a contract to play AFL. There is nothing to say the player won’t move in the future , but as others have said, we hold all the cards.

Given the current way inflation is going 1.4 million in 2034 might only be the cost of a new car 😂

Same. Completely changed the culture of thr club. Went from cellar dwellers to powerhouse club all thanks to Davey.

Yes.

Marley is down at boarding school here at Xavier College.

A friend of mines son plays in the same team as Marley for east Malvern last year and he said he saw him kick 6 goals in a game playing as a midfielder after kicking 5 the previous week. Said hes got genuine talent.

It's only early days and still a lot of water to go under the bridge but signs are looking positive so far.

Jason Taylor keeping close tabs on him.

Turned 15 this year.

A boy from the Kimberley I coached in development is at Xavier and close with Marley, told me he’s a freakish talent

This is what I want to hear.

I’d say Jackson wanting to come home forced their hand here. Once he came into the equation made it very easy for us to say he’s going nowhere unless we get Jackson, and Obviously they’re not letting him go.

So then Kozzie has to choose between what will likely be another failed trade request to go home OR secure his future at a club he loves in one of the biggest contracts in AFL history. I think if Freo could make a trade happen he’d be out.

If Freo really want him they can offer him the same deal we have. They can work that into their cap. You can’t tell me they’re paying their list more than we’re paying ours. We just know what he’s worth to us and it’s plenty. We’re bland without him and just about anything is possible with him on our list.

Redo his contract with a big front end offer with a couple of years extra and put it to him that if he wants the bigger coin over the next 2 years this is where he will find it. Or wait until 2028 is up and then go to Freo. No one, especially someone with a young family, wants to wait 2 or 3 years more for the big pay day. Trading him is a ridiculous idea.

Sorted.

Advice like this. Thats why they pay me the big bucks.

Can't see them affording Jackson, Darcy, Serong, Brayshaw AND Koz (even if they traded Darcy). Treacey would be wanting some of the action too

Bolton on plenty too and Young just signed a monster deal for 8(?) years

There’s not a club in the land that couldn’t work out how to get Koz on their list if he wanted to come. Players retire, players get traded, front and back loading, a rising cba, where there’s a will there’s a way.

I found it hilarious reading through some social media comments which all said something along the lines of "YoU'd ThiNK MelBournE woULd HaVe LeaRNt FroM PetrAccA and OliVEr nOT tO GivE LonG teRM dEALS."

Last time i checked, claz and trac are both still pulling on the red and blue each week and both are pretty damn good players.

Not going to celebrate early but this is a massive win for the club if it happens. "Talented" does a disservice to describing Kozz, what a superstar he is.

Also if it does happen, I along with many others will enjoy getting absolutely stuck in to that [censored] Flogmantle.

How come you did the Capital letter in words thing? That would be fairly annoying and time wasting to write I presume?

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
