Welcome to Demonland: Harvey Langford

Kind of shocked heโ€™s about 1 from 100 in taking contested marks even with getting clean hands on the ball so often.

That has to flip, got to be purely confidence and some strength under the ball because he marked it with ease in juniors.

His reading of the play and decision making are both excellent. Hopefully we see some more on ball time because we need that smarts in the corridor

Possibly his best game yet. I know he kicked 3 against the Hawks earlier this year but today everything he did was damaging. On top of his use of the ball by foot, I was really impressed by his releasing handballs and decision making.

agreed. the release to chandler for a goal was superb.

ย

24 touches, 6th most on the ground, at 75% DE, 3 goal assists, 9 score involvements, and always in the right place to receive on the outside of the contest.

Kid is a jet.

That kick to Melk made me drool. His gut run to spoil (3rd quarter?) was also exceptional.

3 goal assists, 9 score involvements, 500m gained. Seriously good.

Just now, whatwhat say what said:

very hard to see him not being the rising star winner at this point

not sure what other rookies are close to as assured

curtin 26 and 1 for the crows yesterday his only competition for the award

his skills are clean and sharp and he uses the ball very well

great pick for us

Curtin giving him a run for his money but to be fair heโ€™s a second year player in a top 4 team

Youโ€™d have to think Langford is polling the best out of the 2024 draftees - having an absolutely stellar debut season ๐Ÿ‚

For someone so left-side dominant, he still has plenty of time with ball in hand.

Heโ€™s arguably in our best 5 players already and will remain that way for many years to come

imagine him after a full pre season

XL too who barely had any preseason and itโ€™s showing now

Surely heโ€™s the Rising Star favourite. Another excellent performance. He was so composed in tough contests.

Reckon Curtin is currently

Realistically, how many players in the comp can spot that handpass to Chandler, and also nail it? That's just one of his brilliant displays today. Kid's a star.

Absolute gun..

His kicking is an absolute weapon. Hes got a great mix of that Pendles composure and Viney grunt.

Have to agree this kid plays like he has 100-150 games under his belt. Poise and makes the right decision so often.

Vital for our future.

Curtin has had a few good games recently, but across the whole season Langford is a clear level above. He's averaging 7 disposals more, more goals, more tackles, more score involvements, higher disposal efficiency etc. He's currently ranked in the top 100 players, with Nick Daicos the only other debut year player to do that since pre-covid. Levi Ashcroft is the only player eligible who could otherwise win it, though he's had the luxury of playing in the top team, getting lots of easy ball fed to him across half back and his disposals haven't been as damaging. Langfords disposal efficiency and hurt factor is through the roof.

He's absolutely flying and looks like exactly what we hoped he'd become. Future star midfielder who hits the scoreboard - our next Trac.

He is 5th line of betting which is absurd.

Must be because most punters don't watch boring Melbourne matches late every Sunday arvo. I don't blame them.

He's worth a bet at those demented unbalanced odds. Thanks for the tip!

Not sure if its been mentioned but the handball in traffic in the second quarter to set up chin for a goal was just sublime vision.

So many would have thrown that on the boot to a pack inside f50.

Crazy that he has that sort of game sense and IQ in his first year.

Should be the favourite for the Rising Star.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFLโ€™s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.ย

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

Iโ€™ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we wonโ€™t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything youโ€™d like to ask or say below and weโ€™ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics youโ€™d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
