It wad brilliant. Good on him. The second-proudest I've been of Gary Lyon since he couldn't help himself and gave our boys a subtle fist pump while holding the Premiership cup with Chris Grant during the 2021 grand final pre-game formalities.

Also an interesting tidbit later re. Clarry exploring a possible overseas training camp in the off-season and being hell-bent on hitting 2025 in ripping fitness.

THIS needs more attention. Saying Clarry has fallen in love with the club again and wants to repay it. If Clarry was dominant for the past 5 years leading up to this season with whatever antics occurred behind the scenes next year could be a new level.

It was good, but jeepers, a few of you made it sound like the sermon on the mount.

If you want a sermon, come to me.

Adam the Jesus?

View Gazza in conjunction with WJ’s match report Red Faced if you really want to take the grin off the faces of the so-called experts. Although I reckon they’re already moving on elsewhere to say Flagmantle or Brizvegas especially if they lose again this week.

  • There have been some great speeches over the journey. “The Sermon on the Mount” by Jesus Christ (c. 30 AD), “The Citizen of the World Speech” by Socrates (399 BC), “The Quit India Speech” by Mahatma Gandhi (1942) are no doubt in the top 10.
  • Jack Dyer, when asked for a comment about Carlton great Bob Chitty, who had died a few days earlier, Jack replied: “Yeah, bit of bad luck for Bob . . .”. This easily gets a nod in my top 10 (squeezed between Soc and Gandhi).
  • Gary's squeezes into the top 10 (although I haven't listened to it - but judging from Demonland, it clear is superior to carp like “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. (1963) and “We Shall Fight on the Beaches” by Winston Churchill (1940).
  • John Kennedy's "Don't think, do" ranks at 1,967, 456, 835 on my personal list.

Maybe you’re right.

It was just something different compared to the year where we’ve almost become accustomed to being smacked around by the media and seeing clubs circling our playing group like seagulls around a chip.

For him to come out and show his passion for the club and the “he can go to Tazzy” comments, it was just a very pleasant listen.

A big let’s get this right together and the club is always first.

I thought it was great

I disagree. He sways in the wind and goes the easy line. He’s smart enough to see the whole media got it wrong and things are not as bad as are being made out. He’s probably close enough to the club to know more than many and earlier than many what Trac said. So now he wants to redeem himself in the eyes of MFC fans and many will fall for it. Not me.

If he’d stood up for us last week then the praise in this thread would be justified. He didn’t. And he’ll turn on us as quick as blink if any more bad news turns up.

That reminds me I need another box of business cards 😉

I must have watched something different..

There was nothing brilliant or inspiring what Garry said.

He went a bit silly and nuffy with the whole keep him for 3 years then trade him to Tassie.. seriously?

He'll be 32 by then and there is absolutely no way any club would be giving up first round picks for anyone at that age.

I'm a Garry fan but that wasn't his finest nor is this thread either

Haven't watched it, might not bother ruining the good vibes by even bothering to be honest. It's a difficult job to be impartial in the media and at times I think you have to call out players, officials or the club that you support for their own sake.

But when it's time for unity - and more often than not in footy unity is the right answer - it's nice to have someone dig in and provide a bit of a defence and cover for the club. Good for Gaz.

Don't bother.

Good statement speech from GL.  Very impassioned but in a coherent and comprehensive manner.  I loved the comment about offering Larkey 1.5m!!  Very funny but very pointed

Slight aside but the most exciting comment from last nights show was the tid bit that Oliver may be going overseas for a high performance training camp this off season. Clearly determined to get back to his best.

Haven't watched it either. More often than not though people get more excited than I do when it comes to pressers, talk show interviews, statements and emails to members. Will listen if I get a sec but no promises.

Former great player makes emotional rant supporting the club. - Demonland outpouring of love to former player.

Former great player makes rational critique of where the club is at. - Demonland want him burnt at the stake for heresy.

Until Trac and JV come out and say that their future is at the MFC, I couldn't care less about Garry Lyon's opinion piece.

It was SO great to see him in full pro-club mode for first time in a long time and he spoke perfectly I wanted to hug the TV!!!

umm, you might have cared more if Lyon had made a 'rational critique' on why both of them were leaving.  What I mean is that you have to give some weight to him making comments which pleases Demonland.

Would've been nice if he had a crack at McRae as well. Don't just go the easy targets Gaz, call them all out

Watched it. Just because he spoke about his/our club, and not footy in general, does not make it "emotional".

A more definite response to the deliberately malevolent rumours would have been appreciated, but only if he knew for sure. His put down of Clarkson was sharp and destructive.

Otherwise it might have been better to shut up and let the club and players do the talking.

I like Gary. He shouldn't commentate on dees games though. he overcompensates way too much

The point I'm making is that Garry Lyon has often been ridiculed on Demonland when he "rationally" criticises the club. And it's the same people who ridiculed him then, are in love with him now.

yeah, I get that point.  The point I was making, perhaps obscurely, is that that is no reason to discount what Lyon said as meaningless.  Of course, we won't know till we know, but I'd much prefer Lyon to say what he said than echo Morris et al.

True. I’ve been critical of Garry because in his attempt at appearing impartial, he tends to lean towards criticism rather than support for Melbourne. Therefore, while it’s no sermon on the Mount, it’s worth way more in this context.

For mine, his response on last week’s show (12 Aug) which was raw and unfiltered and came only a couple of hours after the grub Morris ‘broke’ the Tracc disgruntled story, shows Garry’s passion for Melbourne perfectly.

If anyone can get that grab from last week’s On The Couch it’s worth a listen.

🙋‍♀️ that’d be me. Not so much on Demonland but in general I have bagged Garry for his overcompensating when it comes to impartiality.

This isn’t me and others “in love with him now.” It’s me and others giving credit where it’s due.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
