But the central ball movement definitely got us some scores in the first half.

Compare that to the Hawks atm. They don't fumble at all, it's incredibly impressive. They also stick and break tackles. If we did that our game would look very different. I'll keep saying it but it's all about the off season. Some fresh faces and a revamped fitness program.

All [censored] aside...and purely about what is best for us ( mfc ) going forward. Is Simon NOW the best choice....not whether he can tie shoes laces, be matey...rock a beanie.   Is he the best coach/strategist  that we need ??

It's not a person per se..but about who can take us forward. 

We're not even stagnating..... the trend is downwards. Simple as that. 

We owe no one anything.  All are commensurately remunerated. This is a professional game.

Time to kick it up a notch.

It's about winning/flags etc...   not back slapping niceties.

I’ve argued earlier that I don’t actually buy it. Our lack of scoring on Saturday wasn’t for want of trying. It was for want of ability. We can’t move the ball quickly because we can’t kick or handball quickly when under pressure. We tried. We failed.

These guys are muck rakers and nothing more. Look at the ensemble, you wouldn’t [censored] on them if they were on fire. 

That hit on May is one he takes 90 times a game. Imagine we dragged him off every time he got tackled. He barely flinched. He got up rubbing his rib cage. 
Did anyone watching this game live thought he was injured in that incident? I don’t think he did either. 
The fact we took him off and subbed him out, when he was walking around in only mild discomfort, speaks to the fact that we have changed our management and were taking no risks  

Do we remind Kane about how Port handled their captain’s hamstring this season?

Without having a dig at the die-hards on here who would refuse to entertain a trade of any sort involving one of our premiership players, I think it might be needed if we're going to see serious improvement and evolution to this side. 

As others have pointed out, the AFL is a competition that is embedded in the entertainment industry and if we want to continue to 'grow' our club and inch closer to a 'big' club like many hoped post Grand Final, we're going to need to seriously look at how we want to play as a side. 16,000 and 17,000 supporters to home games in consecutive weeks is reflective of the type of football we play. It is boring as bat-[censored] and whilst some supporters might be happy with our game against Port, I see it as nothing more than a desperate damage control effort from Goody and co. 

Nobody wants to watch that [censored] and I can almost guarantee that our high-end kids and stars don't want to play in games like that. Petracca has said as much publicly. 

Unfortunately, this is where we see ourselves after investing so heavily in players with attributes that suited a game-plan that Goody believed would stand the test of time. And from this, the demonlanders who delve into stats come up with all sorts of statistics that will justify their views about why we're performing the way we are. 

I've said it all before but it's down to list imbalance completely and wholly. With a game-plan now in transition and some key personnel out, all is being revealed and the cracks that have been there for so long are now gaping holes. 

Posters can hold me to this, but I sense we will lose next week by 50+ given what I've outlined above. Gold Coast are a highly skilled side and I think we got ourselves up for some faux 'pride back in the jumper' type of stuff against Port. I think our levels of enthusiasm and interest are dropping off big time. 

Hard calls need to be made in the off-season, it can't come quickly enough and we need a serious look at how we want to grow this club going forward. I think we're on the edge of needing to move a Fritsch, Viney, Oliver (perhaps not based off of this year's form) on for some fresh air, youth, enthusiasm, new life. I think supporters need to take a long-term view of this club. 

Footy should be fun. For players and supporters alike. You want to come and watch exciting football. The MFC are anything but that and we haven't seen it since the 21 finals series which should tell us all something. 

I still think we have a capable core with some serious weapons but we absolutely need a serious change up over the off-season with an injection of skill, composure and a new found love of actually playing the game. Goodwin has got to get the memo that spitting out the same words at pressers and to the players is just soul destroying and just sucks all the life out of the supporters and players. 

We need to reshuffle our coaches/ bring a couple of fresh voices and ideas in. We need another injection of high end talent from the draft that will help inspire our older stars just as Windsor and Tholstrup have done at times this year. We need to address our game-plan and list imbalances and explore the options of off-loading an experienced player for a player that will help correct some of our execution downfalls. A courageous but necessary inquiry if you ask me. 

All is not lost. 

But this joint needs a whack around the ears. Otherwise we are at risk of more than just missing out again next year. We'll be at risk of stars wanting to leave, supporters dropping off even more which will have huge implications for any growth model we've set. Still without a home base whilst every other club seems to be upgrading the million doller facilities they've had for years. We will be left behind, make no mistake. 

If supporters think this is hyperbole, you're living on planet X. 

The competition is constantly evolving and we better get with the picture next year or watch this space. 

 

Great post, thanks for sharing it. Anyone who loves the club should be willing to examine it honestly and appraise them as highly paid professionals.

The club obviously won't fire him, but we're trending downwards so he'll damage his goodwill, legacy and career prospects if this continues.  He should consider bowing out with his head held high and the gratitude of demon's fans before it gets really bad. 

That's the part of your post I disagree with.  He has had enough time to learn and has had enough years and chances for someone who is so well paid in such a privileged position.  He's a decent bloke who led us to a flag, but we need new leadership and vision to improve.  He was the man.

People will see what they want to see. I see a coach I want at the club in Simon's press conference today.

Excellent press conference today.  Goodwin showed honesty and reflection.

Clearly there’s frustration in the way the season has gone.   The loss of Brayshaw , injury to Trac and the decline of Oliver have really hurt us.  

 

He explained the ANB decision and as much as he could about the personal circumstances.

17 coaches fail every year, maybe only 16 as someone usually gets praised for improved performance, likely Mitchell this year!

While I don’t necessarily think Goodwin is a great coach, he has taken us to a flag, and multiple finals. 
Last year we were very close, had any one off Melksham not gone down in the last game, Brayshaw hit in shoulder rather than head, and Grundy used in the finals, I think we may have won another flag.

Even the recent efforts against Port, GWS and the Lions, particularly Port with a weaker and ill team losing by a kick have been solid efforts and well coached. Dogs was disappointing and we don’t seem to be able to match up to Freo at all!

Many Swans supporters don’t like Longmire, for 10 years Cats supporters said Scott only won one flag that was gifted to him! Then he won a second in a 14 year period! Coaching is a ruthless business, Goodwin might not be the best, but is a long way from the worst!

When you judge this years effort look at what happened pre season and injury wise:

- Brayshaw retired, was in our best 5 players last year

- Smith suspended, almost the perfect sub, providing cover in multiple positions forward and back

- Oliver limited pre season, winner of two coaches award best player in league, four B& Fs

- Trac missed half season

- May missed 5/6 and played multiple with broken ribs

- Petty disrupted pre season never 100%

- Salem pre season disrupted

- Bowey, Lever in season injuries

- Spargo missed the season 

Oliver and Trac are 2 of top 10 players in the league when fit, almost impossible to replace, May is one of top 3-4 backs in the league.

The fact we’ve been in the mix this season is a testament to Godwin’s coaching!

Hahaha I agree, just poking fun. Gawns presser was especially corporate and quite foul. This Goody inspires much more confidence.

Goodwin spoke very well this morning 

I have always worried that “Contest & Defence” has been too much of his Coaching Philosophy. Yes both aspects are very important, but attacking and our forward 50 has always been the poor cousin. 
If he can get the mix right with the right players, he will be a Senior Coach for a long time. But he has got to make that change, and i believe he needs to be a better Coach on Matchday…

But it was refreshing to hear him speak this morning 

He knows big changes are needed, we will have a lot of Cap Space this year to spend on new Faces 

I enjoyed Simon’s presser today he is after all a football person, a realist he knows and understands the “smell” in the air as all intelligent leaders do.  He addressed a number of critical matters in an honest, forthright and open manner, even a bit aggressively. He has signalled that he is up for the fight and welcomes change that will benefit and improve our football club. We will need to be braver and open to the changes that may flow through the club over the next six months and stop overreacting to any negative or misleading press releases during the process. As WayneWussell pointed out when the sky was falling in, we need to get a grip and back our club.

Goodwin out...fish rots from the head! Board can follow him as well....Roffeyy to close to Goodwin the call needs to be made start fresh get buy in on a new program direction with all the players! 

I think Goody is on football classified tonight for those who can stand the [censored] media contingent.

The Curious Case of Simon Goodwin

 

He’s stubborn in his beliefs.

Inflexible when it comes to gameplan.

Barely shows emotion in the box.

Has unshakeable faith that the process will win in the end.

I’m not talking about Simon Goodwin..I’m talking about Neil Craig.

Remember Neil Craig before he came to the Demons? He was the coach of the team nicknamed the “Crowbots” due to their persistence on playing a single brand of football regardless of the in-game situation.

When I see Goody i see the below:

• He's stubborn when it comes to his football philosophy.

• Inflexible when it comes to the gameplan.

• Not a match-day specialist coach.

• Barely shows emotion in the box.

• Has unshakable faith in sticking to the process regardless of the situation.

It's quite clear to me now that Goodwin's coaching philosophy has been moulded by his experiences with Neil Craig.

Craig's "Crowbots" were drilled to play a certain style (mainly numbers behind the ball with superior gut running)and never to stray from this for any reason. If you jump on the Bigfooty website, you can read threads on Neil Craig that sound exactly what we are saying about Simon Goodwin 13 years later. Whilst Craig is without question Goody's greatest influence when it comes to coaching philosophy (as well as personally)  it is time that Goody's takes a leaf out of the Malcolm Blight playbook. I mean he only coached Goody to 2 flags in his first 31 games. I'm not saying that he suddenly throws Steven May forward a.k.a Shane Allen in 97' but he has to step outside his comfort zone of process/ stubbornness and for the rest of this year and next thrown in some creativity/ uncertainty into his coaching. 

Looking at Simon this might be a tough ask as it isn't in his demeanour to be outgoing or coach with flair. It's just not in his DNA. His body language suggest he's gone back into his shell as right now the process the club has invested in isn't working. You can see it in the coaches box every single time the camera cuts to him. His face has the look of "What do I do now?" before turning and quietly talking to an assistant coach. 

 The Goodwin / Craig combo worked as Goody was a workhorse who would prepare harder than anyone  at the club to drive him to success & Craig had the tools methodology that worked for him. Our team has too much natural talent to be stripped away but it nearly has.

The Crowbots made the prelim twice  in the first 2 years but never reached the same heights under Craig. 

So where does that leave the Dees right now?

• A team prepared to run harder & play quicker than anyone else but at the cost skill and execution. 

• A team that has been drilled to stick to the gameplan no matter what.

• A coaching staff that lacks creativity at selection & game day.

• A senior coach who shows no emotion in the box. 

So Goody for the sake of your career...be less Craig and a little more Malcolm.*

*and maybe put Joel Smith forward to crash packs. Couldn't hurt!

I am MORE convinced than ever that Goodwin is NOT the man to take us forward. We need a new coach!
