Buckley has been sitting on a couch pontificating for the last 3 years. He can stay there.

Longmuir would be a good option but 2 grand final trouncing's leave a big mark on his record.

If a change is to be made, go with an up and comer i say

OK. Now, across the same time period:

a) list all of the examples where changes of coach didn't bring about substantial or lasting improvement. You're cherry picking.

b) add in the changes in personnel/players and/or list development for those clubs/coaches for the years in question. You're ignoring other factors than just the change in coach.

If changing coaches was the panacea, how come with the Dees from the end of Daniher (2007) until the arrival of Goodwin (2017) when we had 3 coaches and 3 interim coaches, we never managed to finish higher than 11th - though most of those years we were lower than that?

Dew -> Hardwick

Cameron -> Kingsley

Clarkson -> Mitchell

Are you of the opinion there is never any point to changing coaches? Coaches should only leave on their own merits?

Goody is approaching the 10 year milestone

One kick off having what Goody has. Featured in a number of finals campaigns whilst trying to rebuild a list on the fly. Had a 5-2 head to head record against Goody.

Has openly stated he'd like to coach again and I know for a fact we had made an approach asking him about it not too long ago.

When posters say things like, "game has gone past him", it's bewildering. Like, genuinely. On what grounds do you make that comment?

He coached under Mick straight after retirement and then was a senior coach for almost a decade, falling short by a kick in a GF. And since then, has been in footy through the media, sharing his knowledge and insight into the modern game. Coaching is multifaceted, to say the games gone past him is just wild.

Personally, I think the group is ready for a fresh voice but a voice that commands respect, inspires and has players on their toes again before they even speak a word to the group. Someone with gravitas. Someone like Buckley.

I genuinely see us at a cross roads. I can't see our senior players maintaining a consistent spike in form before they retire under Goody. I think they're all too tired, too bored of the messaging, don't feel like they have anything to prove. I see all of this through a psychological lens separate from gameplan and list issues. I think it contributes to the in-fighting and arguing we see on field. It's all part of it.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this way. When the symptoms start repeating, you know there's something underlying and I think some of what we're seeing in performance, energy, vibe, confidence etc is due to Goodwin. And I think he needs to go.

1) Buckley is the same type of coach as Goodwin he is more a player relationships coach and lacks any real additive tactical nous

2) He has been out of the game for almost 4 years, which is a generation in football years

3) The 2023 CFC premiership list is largely the same list he was working with. McCrae almost immediately turned it around in 2022 after just a couple of months with the team.

If that doesnt have a warning label on it, then i dont know what will. I wouldn't touch him in particular with a 10 ft pole.

I dont have anything personal against, i dont mind his commentary when he doesnt have his Pies goggles on. But keep him out of MFC.

I just hope that the MFC doesn’t sit on its hands and leave Goodwin as coach for next season. Change needs to be made now in prep for next season imo.

If the M.F.C continue with Goodwin, sponsors might wonder ... a lot, Memberships will wonder even more !! Cut to the chase, He ain't the man to move us forward... PERIOD!

🤔

Definitely a reasonable argument.

Can't decide if for or against.

Not my go to though. I don't really have one but I'm leaning towards an up and comer..

Would have liked Ooze but that ship's sailed.

Definitely need a better tactician than we currently have.

I'd prefer the Hawthorn way, get a young and upcoming coach. Someone that wants to prove himself and the AFL his worth.

I think Goody, and a few other coaches need to be moved on. There seem to be a few issues with our gameplay and I think that would be bigger than Goody. He’s been great, but things haven’t changed. The same issues are still there and it doesn’t seem to be changing.

Sam Mitchell has a very elevated sense of self worth, I’d prefer someone a little less about themself

All of this talk about changing coach must be making Kossie a bit nervous; particularly if one of Trac or Oliver (or both) were to be traded out for picks. These are the people who he has a good relationship with, and it was those relationships that probably played no small part in getting him across the line.

How would he feel having just signed a 9 year deal, only to lose the people that he felt closest to? I hope that if things do head down that path, that it doesn’t have a detrimental affect on his game next year. I understand that such decisions must be made for the betterment of the club, and I know they’re supposed to be professionals and would be expected to cope with such events, and yes, I know that one player cannot be bigger than the game, but Kossie strikes me as someone who is quite sensitive and it could take him some time to get over such moves.

Just a thought.

Buckley is a walking disaster.

He quit Brisbane to play in a team that plays finals when they had the best list of all time.

He got rid of Collingwoods best players because they werent robots.

Was nicknamed FIGJAM for a reason.

I could go on about his off field behaviour but that would be inappropriate for deonland and have me blocked

So, after round five I thought Goodwin was done, and was honestly surprised at how the team turned around in the games after that. We've slid back again over the last few weeks, but short of a trainwreck of a second half of the season I'd say Goodwin will have done enough to still be in place next year, especially as the club will be loathe to pay him out of his contract.

That all said, I'm not sure I see the path from here. We've got a bunch of senior players on long term contracts who seem to be regressing or unable to adapt from the style we used in 2021, and a forward line that doesn't inspire confidence even on its best days, with noone at the tier below looking awfully convincing to me . Our lack of development of KPFs seems to go back a decade (can someone who has a better memory than me give an example of anyone we've drafted as a tall forward who's gone on to be good since the mid-2000s?).

This naturally isn't all on Goodwin, but his watch has gone long enough now for it to be a problem he owns. Same goes for the tendency of too many players to just throw it on the boot in hope, it's not a new issue and it's frustrating we saw so much of it against Port again.

I'm concerned we're going to end up stuck in no mans land where we have good enough players to paper over the cracks and win games, but not good enough to be a contender come finals time and just slowly fade down the ladder. It feels like the point where the club needs to try and do something bold at season's end to stop this, but experience says they won't.

Yep, very much the potential dilemma and why we need to act to get ahead of it.

Hesitate and flounder.

The reality is the window is shut. This list as is isn't getting within a bulls roar of a Granny.

Time for a complete makeover. Reality suggests only a half dozen or so current Dees will still be running around in red and blue in 5 years time.

Need to bite the bullet. The current setup isn't taken us far.

We haven't been proactive enough in list management since winning the flag.

Bit like repairing Grandpa's spade with a new handle and a new blade 😉

Just a few tweaks ??

We have been treading water and slowly receding for 4 Seasons, so i think that chance may have passed him by

I certainly hope 2026 is not another rinse and repeat

Goodwin should have been replaced after 2 straight set Final defeats…but instead his contract was extended

Here we are in 15th position

Would Kozzy be that naive to think Goodwin would always be there ? Doubt it. Pickett has feathered his nest, and we'll. Good on him.

If we do go down the track of untried coaches I would strongly be looking at Brett Montgomery from GWS.

Could probably teach a few how to kick while he's at it 😉

Mind you in 2023 they extended him before finals. Should have let him earn the extension by delivering in September.

I just hope he does what Longmire did put his hand up to say I can do anymore with this group, no shame and he gets the respect as our only living premiership coach which he’s earnt.

I won’t be surprised if he did something similar to Hardwick or Longmire.

Why?

Personally I’d prefer Goodwin over Buckley. If we’re to change coach get the best and most accomplished assistant and get Simpson in as Football Manager. Then bring in someone like Leppitsch. Our list is far from bottom 4. Goodwin has had his time and he must know he’s not coaching beyond 26. Feels like time to step down as I don’t reckon we’ll be sacking him.

But he won't

What’s the wrap on the up and coming coaches. I was a bit worried when WCE were really struggling to find a coach and ended up going for Mini purely as there were no other candidates that stuck out.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
