10 years coaching in the west with a flag to his name. Like Goodwin, a philosophy based coach who doesn't like to swing the magnets around on gameday but believed in his system. I don't know what the overall feeling was among the fan base but the few WC members I know very well were right behind him until the very end.

He was up for the rebuild and seemed to do the best he could and up until recently it looked they believed in him. Don't know what happened behind the scenes but a good coach has lost his job and that's never nice. All the best Simmo.

I watched his post match press conference after our match and he showed alot of class. AFL coaches are pretty impressive individuals and I always find it interesting to listen to what they have to say and Adam Simpson is no exception.

Fascinating situation over there. 
The Club shut itself down over Covid. You could tell they had no interest at all. 
Since then Simpson has been unable to restart the engine, sporadically he got responses but it has been a complete clusterf$&@k

I would love to know the real reason they have been dead for 5 years 

I wonder if the Dogs will act on Beverage, usually when the first coach goes the next one isn't to far behind

Interesting couple of weeks, add in Hinkley if they miss finals.

Yeah during covid they didn't deal with it at all & just complained the whole time & never recovered. 

Surely Dean cox is the front runner. Done his apprenticeship & he may want to get away from longmire & getting yelled at.

I really hate the way coaches are usually shown the door, but apart from some uncomfortable moments in the press conference, it looks like this one was done with respect and class. 

I love the public face of the way Simpson coached. And for the longest period, the players were absolutely in sync with him. I liked the measured and intelligent way he spoke in public, the way he supported his players, and the stoic way he stuck to his gameplan and footy philosophy. And until 2020 the WCE game style was powerful and attractive. So, well done Simmo!

WCE could be in a worse mess after this (if that is possible), with sponsors questioning their association, players disgruntled, entitled or wanting to leave, supporters wanting instant success, and a new season of compromised drafting etc... due to the Tassie franchise. 

Cue the coaching merry-go-round. Hinkley and Nicks on very shaky ground, and Bevo not far behind (which I reckon is a misjudgment).

Dean cox would be a returning favourite son.  But then again they passed over sumich.  Th ok go tg  red Sydney tins and the wire success is a good model to follow.

Though access to a state of talent helps.

hope they suffer and are bottom for years. can’t see them recovering despite Reid

I was going to agree with you then i remembered the Scott brothers, Bomber Thompson and Neald. Not that classy when these people get to the top.

Point of difference!!

Simpson carried him self with dignity right to the end and did the ultimate team thing in taking the heat and drama out of this decision weeks and even months in advance.

That's a bit unfair given the premiership and six consecutive finals appearances to go with it, but taken on the last few years it'll do.

Is that a reference to a indie band known more for their videos than their music? 'Red tins and wire' is definitely their style.

Older players on big dough knowing that they are not going anywhere and happy to play out their days and younger guys on a third of the money trying their guts out every week creating a rift. There is talk that a few of the senior players refuse to socialise with or even speak to some of the young ones. Simmo has been piggy in the middle.

People blame the Tim Kelly trade but their recruiting from 2011-2020 was mostly disastrous.

From ages 21-28 it’s pretty much Barrass, Ryan, Sheed, Waterman, Allen.

And guys like Ryan and Sheed fell right away when asked to be meat of the team.

We have a bit of a hole from 23-27 on our list bought about by the trades for Lever and May, which is why fixing Oliver, fixing Petty, maybe even Spargo and landing a free agent or 2 soon will be important, and why the investment in youth this year has been paramount.

Danni Laidley has had her name dragged up as a possible replacement to help makeover the team.

McGovern was first drafted as a rookie in 2010 (with Gaff, Darling, Lycett a great draft) and Yeo a trade (a great one but not a draft pick in that draft). So yeah, still a very good draft but with Sheed's decline it's lost a lot of what it could've been.

Generally across the Simpson tenure they traded a lot of earlier picks for guys like Yeo, Redden, Wellingham, even gave up an asset in big Sinclair for Jetta and topped up with a lot of veterans too.

They were following the Hawks post 2008 model which is great if you've got a young core but just like Hawthorn it can take the depth out of your list the longer you do it for. The Kelly deal isn't even that bad, but it many ways it was a big straw that killed the camel.

Coaching and list management has to take the blame as well, they didn't give O'Brien much to work with, although he certainly had a string of outs.

They seemed to draft a lot of nice enough safe players without athleticism or edge.

This is the point lost by the media.

They managed the covid years deplorably.

Demonstrates how meritorious the Dee's and tiges flags were in 20 and 21.

No way did we bottom out. The finals performances in terms of club management by the Dee's was one for the ages.

Given Eagles performance you'd have to question Board competency. But no. Let's make Simmo  the fall guy.

Its a brutal assessment of his tenure and quite disrespectful. As bad as the last 4-5 years has been, to have it all on Simmo alone is outright criminal. The WA media should get a please explain as im sure their views dont represent the broad consensus. It is again this whole sensationalism to sell papers and get clicks - just where do these buffoons draw the line.

 

I will still maintain that a senior coaches lifespan in the AFL system is 5-7 years. Anything more than that is an exception to the norm, especially if you havent won a flag. Its similar to the average games played in the AFL. Many would do we well to get to 100 games - something like 2/3's dont even make it passed 50 games.
