I counted 12 steps on Rivs goal kicking run - rough rough call that ultimately cost the gane

Correct.  No way too far.

Though Petty and Langdon had chances to bury it

Petty and Langdon  missing easy shots that would have put us nearly 5 goals up lost it for us

Not really.  If Petty kicks the goal the ball goes back to the centre and the future takes on a different path from that point onwards.

You really actually have no idea, Fritta who I have been critical of recently played a very solid team game tonight and played as a defensive forward on Andrews.

And you claim you coached

ANB was tripped over the line and they got that last goal from it. WTF.

We don’t help ourselves though by not kicking a goal in the last AGAIN.

Lol he absolutely wasn't tripped over the line.

And watch how it doesn’t even make the news cycle. Instead they will chose to focus on Mays spoil which didn’t even touch the knobs head.

Surely Jeffo time. Petty must be dropped if he can’t kick.

A certainty to most.. except Simon Badloss

I'm one eyed but the ANB over the line was obvious in my one eye

[censored] off, umpiring criminal & playing Petty again cost us 0.4, he is sooo underwhelming

We had a crack, some good young kids

Was to angry

I'm not a Goodwin basher, he got us a flag and generally speaking has turned us in to a good H&A team in his tenure.

But he needs to be MUCH better with his use of the sub. I doubt K.Brown could have saved the game for us two weeks in a row, but we were clearly getting steamrolled in the last and he waited until there was about 4 minutes left? Why not inject the fresh legs earlier? Did he not take some learnings away from last year's final?

Some of the umpiring though, sheesh! Rivers run too far? Free against for blocking when May marked on the wing (and didn't May let the ump know about it too), May mark not paid, just a few of many BS decisions.

I'm not a basher of Fritsch but nate, you've gotta at least look like you're chasing your opponent, especially when the ball is on the wing! You can get away with it when you're hitting the scoreboard but when you've been quiet for a few weeks these "efforts" stick out like dogs balls l.

Intensity definitely at a level we haven't seen since the Geelong game.

Physical or mental? Gotta be both...

Mate he wouldn't have looked out of place at the MCG on Wednesday night, it was that blatant.

There were far worse decisions made on the night.

Disappointed to lose but bloody impressed with our intensity and contested footy. Strangely feel more upbeat compared to last week which is just a mindset thing I guess. Keep playing the kids.

A good effort when we all thought we will get owned. I was happy with our midfield performance in particular. We smashed them in contested possessions and won the clearances which is a great sign without Trac and Salem.

But bitterly disappointing to once again [censored] the bed in front of goal. It’s cost us games, finals and probably another premiership and it’s infuriating.

Also a massive massive [censored] you to the AFL and the absolute hacks they employ to umpire our game. That Rivers goal should never have been disallowed. They absolutely cost us a win tonight and if we were a club that stood for anything we would question this one sided display. But we won’t. And so continues the endless cycle of [censored] umpiring costing teams games.

2024 can get in the goddamn bin.

PS- great game from AMW!

PPS- all you Clarry detractors can eat my shorts

Always the same. Play slow = lose. Every time I see May hanging on to it in the goal square my heart sinks. Just sucks all the energy out of us. We are not batteries, we are human. Get the energy up and it gives you more energy, not less.

We must be the dumbest team to never learn from it.

The lack of composure from so many of our players was just not good enough. Should have won that by 3 or 4 goals. Langdon and Petty missing regulation shots at goal, 4 times between them.

i said to my family we have to take all our chances in the last, miss and we won't win.

When Petty missed at the top of the last you could tell it was game over.

The result was predictable after that.

The only forward who looked like kicking straight was Kozzy.

And again, we stopped to a walk in the last. I can only assume it's the combination of too few doing the heavy lifting.

AMW a really solid debut I thought. Clarry and JVR early were brilliant, but JVR fell off a cliff in the second half.

And finally, May should be told long kicks only from the kick outs or only take the absolute no brainers short. Far too often it's him turning it over from the kick in this season.

Such a disappointing result. A brilliant second quarter, some good patches in the other quarters, but our inability to take regulation shots on goal and convert them has cost us one flag and will see us miss the 8 altogether this year.

Sorry, also Viney was incredible.

The fitness of the team is starting to actually show. I wonder if the pre season program was changed.

Don't worry we'll peak in September, just won't be playing unfortunately

We result failed to stop their chip possession game in the end.

From the back half they kept chipping,  forcing us to man up and wear ourselves out defending.

They were then  able to keep moving the ball quickly into their fwd line all night.

We knew they'd play that way but we couldn't stop it.

Great effort from the boys

Disgraceful importing yet again. AFl got what they wanted

And the dumb thing is he had 2 lose team mates in front of him had he attempted a bounce handball

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
