GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

Recommended Posts

Getting within 5 goals of them at their home ground would be considered a win for us tonight. Let's hope it's not another blowout near 100 points.

Our season is over, we're now in rebuild mode and playing kids, but we don't want to completely shatter the morale and psyche of the players, as with a decent off season we can jump back up and be competitive next season. It's a fine line to tread to extract top draft picks without ruining the club in the process.

Flew in last night… Gonna to be a long night methinks. Already have some pre game drinks sorted at The Pineapple And Ze German Club… any other recommendations?
Its  not even midday and have seen around 10 people with their Melbourne tops on, biceps glistening in the warm sunshine up here ☀️

You make it sound so poetic. I’d say it’s late June and I’m sunburnt and wtf is up with that?! Do they even have a winter here?

Perhaps Sparra to run with Zorko ?

Chin with Ashcroft .
If Oliver tagged too heavily swap him with Kossy.    Is there a plan C or D ?

Berry's had the edge over Clarry for a while now if my memory serves me correctly.

I'd play Clazz up forward alot more, about 50/50.

His recent form is a mile off his usual level anyways so i'd just sacrifice it and ask the 2nd/3rd stringers to step up like Rivers, Sparrow (looked a tad better than previous games in the middle last week), ANB & a little from Koz.

Koz shldn't be playing more than approx 20% in the middle imo as it robs us of an extra goal or so and we lose the best i50 pressure guy when he aint there.  38% CBA% so far this season (vs 11% in 2023) is over kill for mine.

It feels like about 30 degrees here in Victoria as well.  Alas, that is in Fahrenheit.

Could be worse, could be Kelvin.

Our senior players have a real responsibility now - to augment, lead and encourage the young 'uns' coming into the side against all odds. These new players will benefit from the experience and the increasing identity with the MFC; it is hoped that they can grasp the challenge ahead, making good impact on our successful re-build and return to form. Go get 'em, boys!

Well if we get up tonight I will have had a great day, golf , kayaking and fishing in Narooma and just read there is doubt about BT’s future on CH7. Hopefully we find some form and cause a massive upset.

Agreed. Though it's hard for the youngsters to be enthused when they're dropped after debut games on limited minutes... The selection committee has been poor this season.

As for tonight, I'm hoping to see more promising signs from Van Rooyen. He's looked likely since returning from concussion, and with Payne out he will have less tall defenders crowding his path if the ball is moved with speed. He's a pillar of our future, so his progress will be one of the few shining lights going forward in this disappointing season.

Won last week, hoping we make it two in a row.

We got the jump on North and if we can get a good start against the Lions we will be right in it.

They have mental pressure on them as well, pushing for the eight, being favourites and at home. They could crack!

I reckon we have always been a better away from home team. One day we will dominate the “G”, till then these away games are important to win.

Play as a cohesive team, make it easier for each other, be clean with the ball, and fight for everything.

Expecting a return to our best, a season defining game!

Go Dees!

Wonder if Petty will fire up tonight... 🤣

Just kidding, he'll be loping around, thoroughly disinterested and completely [censored] useless!

this sort of comment does such a disservice to the ol' #8 yr username was inspired by

petty was huge in the last two minutes last week - pack mark following pup's big tackle, then great workrate to be last man back defensively as they pressed again in final minutes

i'd say yr the useless one, not the 24 year old premiership player

Our only hope is to make this a low scoring slog, now that Lever is back in.

If we let the Lions pile on a big score, we are absolutely going to get smashed.

I am desperately worried about our midfield getting pantsed tonight. We need a massive game from Viney and Clarry if we are any chance.

Crazy thing is... the ladder is so tight, if we somehow snatched a win tonight and got the job done against West Coast at home next week, that Saturday night game against the Bombers would become a big game again, and we could jump them.

Sadly with our inexperience and form we could lose all three, but I can dream. Ruining the Bombers season is one of the few things I can hope for in the rest of 2024.

Hopefully he gives more than 2 minutes tonight

Perhaps a full game down back will do the trick... 🤷‍♂️

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
