Referencing 2004 in 2024 is like referencing 1984 in 2004. Totally different games. The league is holistically much tougher (and better) now. Good teams don't lose like that. Fullstop.

You don't need to convince me that once in 75 years is not good odds.

We have a lot of ‘confidence’ players who are absolutely devoid of confidence.

It appears like there is something going on in the background or there is a huge disconnect between playing group/coaching.

We have been getting dragged over the line by individual brilliance rather than teamwork since the GF win

Absolutely. The stats from today have such a large element of unreality that its difficult to fathom the issues given the talent on the list, albeit with gaps.

Petty  - 2 disposals,  Midfield crushed,  and we now indisputably know we have the poorest attack in the AFL.  Certainly not contenders, even with a win against the Pies next week.

Fascinating second half of the season to see the response, esp from the Match Cttee.

Worst fear is bottoming put as some here may suggest. Worst time in AFL history to be that posiiton with Tassie coming in to suck out the talent.  Think GWS/Suns nightmare for us 15 years ago.

We are no hope next week. Im not a betting man but I’ll be dropping $10 on the pies to win by 40+ points.

No I was not serious.

Well Maybe about Maxie, he seemed to be distributing more out of the centre than some of on ballers.

Chasing our opponents is what we excelled at for about a decade a while ago. It was like a trip down memory lane.

Why haven't we managed to attract one good foot soldier from another club? List management have had a lot of praise, but have we managed to add anyone of use since Langdon? Bbb for flag year? We've lost plenty....

We've managed to paper over the cracks for quite a while, but you can only get away with that for so long. List has some serious holes and hard to say where solutions are going to come from, at least in the short term.  Almost time to start playing the kids, couldn't be much worse.

The cracks have been papered-over by the smallest handful of players across this season, not 'we' nor Goodwin. The game against the Eagles was proof. This game against Freo was ramifying and we will probably lose to the Filth by the same margin, next game. We have recruited well over the past few years but we have not developed those so annoited in the red 'n blue. The onus can now only be distributed to the 'handful' (ie: one player in every line) who are nearing exhaustion and frustrated out of their minds; simply, it is too late to make changes for this season, as well.

The flip flopping by Goodwin and our coaching staff on their decision to have a 2nd ruck is laughable, hearing Goodwin say how much he valued Grundy to nothing and backing Gawn as a solo ruck with a young Jvr & petty today…not to mention since Yze had left our mids have gone backwards is it Mcqualter our mids coach? This sums up were we are at & they have managed to destroy a list that should have won another flag

Lol yes, woke is the problem.. incredible analysis

It wasn’t a pointed analysis of today’s game. It’s a clear focus of the club and is prevalent throughout all club media produced. Like it or not, we are too nice on and off the field.

We need to become ruthless.

I had a great day today didn’t watch a minute and never bothered to check scores, the game is basically unwatchable these days and I’m pretty much done with AFL At this point, I didn’t get frustrated or angry and spent some quality time with the kids won’t bother renewing my membership next year or might just downgrade to country membership, I just can’t watch AFL Anymore even neutral games I get annoyed the love has gone, surely I’m not alone feeling this way

Another issue we have is that since 2021, with our older players now having kids and being married and our coach now being single, their private lives aren’t on the same page hence the coach has lost the players. Who does Goodwin have to enjoy life with now??

The Kolt needs to step up and step out with Goody!

Blissfully overseas and loving SE Asia. That is, until I opened my AFL app.

No idea how the game played out other than by reading stats but one thing stands out from the numbers - yet another smashing in the midfield.

Tell me again how good our midfield is.

And so our run in the top 8 comes to an end. 82 consecutive weeks by my count. I like stats and records so it saddens me that it’s over (would love to know if it’s any sort of record - @WheeloRatings?) but maybe it’s a blessing - time to get real about our midfield, our list and our fitness.

Petty must be dropped and given to Crows at end of year, he should never play in a Melbourne jumper again.

Sparrow, Chandler, Turner, McAdam must be dropped, Windsor & Woewy need a rest, bring in couple of young blokes.
Goodwin needs to go at end of year, give senior job to Chaplin or McQualter, or try to get Yze back from Richmond.

Could not watch game as at work.  Glad I was working (could not believe what I was seeing with the score board on phone)  Did a flu bug go through the club or something. This is  a bad dream I will wake up in a minute

It’s time for the club to become unsociable and show some toughness rather than increasingly focusing on the woke and feel good.

Yes woke, they're always awoke because of all the kids they're all having.

Time for a bonk ban.

Players with no kids are not woke so much.

Let's get Toby Green and Maynard in.

Tommy Raudonikis can coach.

Andrew Bolt for Ceo.

Probs solved.

One of the feelings that I keep coming back to is this. For most of my life as a Dees fan, you got used to the chance that no matter how terrible or good we were at the time, a result like this could happen. Forget 186, I remember being in my adolescence in 98 and being in reasonable form coming up against an ok Geelong team that was still sort of riding on the tails of those GF appearances list wise. They came out in that first quarter and smacked us, goal after goal after goal it was completely unprecedented.

You then have 186, another gane that I at least expected us to be competitive in but a witches hats like performance. Obviously the last game of Roos in 16.

We've been spoiled, yes spoiled. Since that 2016 game against the Cats we have almost always been in games, very rarely have we had the wanting to hide our face feeling due to our talent, system and competitiveness. It has always helped us % wise and really in 8 years to hardly lose a game by over 50 points is remarkable.

And then comes today, that old and dark feeling that on any given gameday a shellacking could happen. Yes, I thank the MFC for this run of not being bounced but this one certainly took me back.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
