Yes, the umpiring was very average, but if we turned up to play at the start of the game, instead of the 2nd qtr, we wouldn't have this thread.

That's true, but also if the umpire on just 2 occasions did the right thing, we would have one goal more from the rubbish dangerous tackle disallowed goal and they would have one goal less, from the incorrect ruck out on the full to Pittonet, who was the one who hit it out and giving them a goal.

That gives us a 2 goal win.

That is ignoring multiple other incorrect decisions, which of course can happen in a game.

Here is the real question though, in each of the last 3 games against the Blues, all won by them by less than a goal, how many controversial decisions went our way instead of Carlton's.

I have no doubt the crowd affects umpires and that is a fault with our game.

As soon as #22 turns up, you know where not getting any 50/50s it’s like 10 vs 90!

But it wasn’t umpires that cost us the game, it was a combination of Carlton starting hot, playing very well , and the ball falling in their laps in first quarter.

Love how he goes on AFL360 and tells us how hard his job is and then pleads for umpires to not be abused, yet is absolutely derelict in his duty when he has to make any important calls.

I don't understand why unlike us, the umpires came storming out of the blocks and gave the blues 11 frees in the first quarter to our 3 and then only awarded 8 more to them for the rest of the game.

I also didn't get why for 3 quarters of the game they completely ignored htb and then decided to pay it non stop.

The htb particularly frustrating because we were not getting our tack to es rewarded.

It must be hard for the players when one rule comes and goes in the course of a single game.

Also the dob seems to be a coin toss . One which blues got the benefit of at least three times and one seemingly influenced by who has the most supporters.

It's hard not to think the umpires had a Carlton win plan last night.

That Jvr free for dangerous tackle was a shocker and umpires need to be better than that.

I found myself saying in the first quarter that the umpires don't need to find a free kick in every contest. But they did a good job in trying.

Appalling clear bias, NB #22 who always screws us, but we did lose it in the first quarter.

11 Frees to Carlton. In one quarter

The one that gets me is when Curnow comes flying through, collects Rivers high and he has to go off with the blood rule bleeding from the head and it's no free kick to Rivers.

The AFL are supposed to be protecting the head, not their favourite players.

Free kick total for 1st Qtr incidental?

Can we make this a weekly thread? With the "not why we lost" or I'm not a conspiracy theorist" but . . . proviso.

What about a "we withdraw our services thread" As i understand all clubs have to participate in each years fixture?

Did anyone see what happened to clarry on the wing? He gave away a free kick then gave the Carlton bloke an almighty spray. So something must have happened first.

There's one certainty in footy.  The umpires will make mistakes and supporters will continue to think it's targeted.

Get on with it, poo happens.

That free kick agatnst JVR in the last quarter was probably the creme del la creme of umpiring boo boo we will see this year. Then again we were playing carlton.

There is no question the umpires have been told to let the game go and as long as the ball is moving the AFL is happy.

The incorrect disposal rule doesn't exist, get tackled drop it play on, get tackled try to dispose of it and you get pinged.

The common sense in the deliberate oob doesn't exist, pay a free kick get the ball moving.

Tackle someone spin them 360 as long as the ball comes out play on.

Minimise stopages make the game faster for TV.

Umpires just have so much going on, add this clear AFL instructions and they just have no chance

It was two words INTEGRITY and IMPARTIALITY, and he repeated it many times in the interview.

As soon as I hear that, I know there isn't any. If there was, no need to mention it. Bit like 'at arm's length from Government', which means 'we interfere all the time'.

still no word from afl on jvr tackle

same on their media site

social media and other footy sites going crazy on it. majority view was great tackle, no free. as for staging, very mixed

definitely needs clarity from afl ... waiting ... waiting ............

Not sure about that. I think he meant attempting not to be swayed by the crowd.

Some games just go against you .

We started horribly. But Carlton in the wet could not miss a goal.

The ball bounced their way.

They got the benefit of doubt from umpires.

It just happens.

It was that peanut with a hair band. He was mouthing off as well last year to our players.

I have never seen Max so angry as he was last night after a free was given. I think it was down near the goals. I was waiting for one of the players to go ape at the umpire. I thought Harry was going to get penalised at one stage.

Agree with you, but I have absolutely no doubt that different players are umpired differently.

Take Oliver and Cripps as examples.

Clarry is pinged for holding the ball or throwing in an instant, while Cripps is given an eternity to dispose and throws the ball without penalty regularly.

I say that from years of watching both play.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist when it comes to umpires. But I agree that some individuals appear to be adjudicated differently to the majority.

I've long thought that Cripps is a protected species

I think the issue is the cumulative effect of a number of poor decisions or non decisions that went against us on the night.

The umpires certainly put their whistles away late in the game especially when we were getting inside 50. To scared to make a decision.

As a club a please explain should be sent to the AFL for clarification of a number of decisions and/or non decisions.

As Demonland has many. many passionate Dee posters and readers we should have some influence (won't call it clout) with the club.

My understanding, and I stand to be corrected, is the umpires review every game and the errors are identified and feedback is given to the umps.  It may be that the club gets a report on this that they keep confidential. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a "we were wrong" from Laura on the JvR decision.

I do agree that different players are umpired differently.  Ginnivan is a perfect example.

I can't trust myself to judge the umpiring as I can't take off my red and blue goggles. I wonder what neutrals thought?

I thought the JV lack of intent when he was sslung kicking it was a shocker; Rivers getting hit in the head and no free was not a good moment for the umps; but JVR dangerous tackle 50/50 and tbh I would like the umps to err on the side of caution in these situations...

Glad you asked; they were terrible

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
