What does this prove? Nothing.. Just because you're a contender doesn't mean you're vulnerable to conceding big scores.

Sometimes it's a good thing to have games where you do concede big score because it gives you the opportunity to reassess your team defensive structure. Not even a bad thing if Carlton failed whatever test you're thinking of. Geelong are just a bloody good side with a strong offensive and forward structure.

Simon Goodwin has been on record in stating this over the last few years.

It’s not the fact that Carlton gave up 20 goals, Carlton’s defence is horrible at the moment. They’re in the bottom 10 for points against. No premiership winner in the last 20 years has been below 6th for points against. I know they’ve got some players out, but even Adelaide has conceded less than them.

Melbourne is 1st for points against. I’d almost be willing to bet that we wont give up more than 80pts against Geelong. If we take our chances and kick accurately we’ll win.

geelongs talls will cause us great problems if we continue to just try to kick to Max all the time.  I did like the fact that  couple of time people kicking out started to go left then turned and went right, through richmond out players out of position. I would like to see more of that than kicking it to contests between Max and geelong talls all the time. the bigger problem is their run and carry, if we dont man up across the ground we will be in trouble as players leave their man to cover someone free which leaves their players open. The game against richmond was the first time i saw most of the players manning up. Unfortunately a few of our forwards did not man up and that essentially just got the richmond players passing to these open players. if we can fix this and make every kick a contest that will really help us. As for Petty, yes he has had an injury interrupted season, be that as it may we should not be playing players who are not fit and ready. He unfortunately does not look fit or ready, I wish he was. Fullerton looks like a possible replacement, and i would like to see hunter in again, billings also probably needs to find a little more form.

I hope Geelong continues to get hyped up and goes in over confident, the win against Brisabane is probably the best win they have had, a few of their other wins were not so impressive against much lower teams. We should be beat them, ideally i would like to see us [censored] the buggers, but happy just for the win.

The facts are you gave 2 examples of 20 goals against the Premier from 7 years ago. The other example you gave is actually from the 22 GF, so yeah the Swans weren't winning it that year giving up 20 goals ...

I literally gave an example from last year.. 

Binman said Carlton aren't being contenders by conceding 20 goals which in fact they actually didnt last night. 

They conceded 18 so I gave examples of past contending or premierships teams that have done this midway through a season.

Had the pleasure of attending the Geelong vs Carlton game and Geelong move the ball down the wing with serious pace and arent afraid to come back inboard. Their wingers and flankers are all quick and they don't do slow entries that our backline would feast on. Gawn will destroy Stanley in the ruck and around the ground but I reckon Stanley will get dropped/rested. We are going to be in for a lot of hurt if they can get their run going against us.

Previous few games the Cats have gone with Stanley taking the centre bounce then moving back to CHF.

Blicavs took Tracc at centre bounce and then the ruck contests b/n the arcs.

Hawkins takes the ruck contests in the fwd 50

 

They jump into Max at every chance,  switch the ball constantly asks chip their way into their fwd line

It’s not in my book but wanted to highlight a massive fixturing inequality. With 5 day breaks we don’t have a main training session, so to work on tactics, game plan etc is reduced.

Interesting comparison. BTW Menegola is no longer on their list.
IMO 7 of our 'outs' are hurting us cf only two of theirs (bold).
IMO the form of two of our players has dropped significantly as has two of theirs (red)
IMO three of our 'ins' have improved us cf 4 of theirs (green).

I'm not sure there's much point to this comparison.
Our midfield and backline should win on Sat night.
It'll come down to whether or not we can make the most of our forward 50 entries.
I wouldn't be hanging my hat on Petty improving. As a beckman he had experienced players around him - May, Lever, Salem, Hibberd and Gus.
As a forward he has Fritta as the only experienced (tall( forward.

Just my two bob's worth. I don't think we'll win, but I do think we'll learn enough to beat the Blues.

Wouldn’t worry to much about Stanley, he is absolutely cooked, have never seen such a big bloke get pushed around and fall over so much in my life

No change for mine. Petty on notice. His one wood is his marking.
No co-incidence that his best performances correspond  with him taking a high number of marks (>8). 
On his day he can out-mark any of the Geelong defenders albeit Stewart and TdK strong in the air. I don't think he'll have either of them. Currently no-one to take his spot.
Billings going ok. Will get better IMO.

Sometimes I think we place KPIs for the Dees on other teams. We like to (or have in the past) keep teams to 60 or less. That desire presupposes the kind of dead slow, brutal, contested game that we would grind out 70 and win.

Geelong and Carlton use more of the field than we have and have great structures to maximise their excellent forward lines. 

So when they are off a little bit they give up scores or runs of goals. 

When we are off for a little bit we are losing 7 goals to 2 at 3 qtr time…

Makes comparing trendline of form on goals scored by good teams a foolhardy endeavour.
