Kudos for club's Messaging

Well done to Max and Richo for recent media messaging strategy.

Max is representing the players admirably and interestingly was lead skipper on the interview front at yesterday's launch. With Bont running  second. Age's lead article was Max today. Face it he's way more interesting to the media anyway.

But...the clever component was Richo's sneaky aside to tim Watson last week that the Dee's are near the bottom of the hair testing ladder. Firstly we didn't know there was one.

Secondly upwards of maybe 16 clubs have more issues and by the media"s definition poorer culture than us. But no one is following this thread lest we find heaven forbid the Pies are top of the ladder.

Do you have a link to the Richo reference re hair testing ladder?  I can't seem to find any reference.

Pies are the greatest team ever and anything that does not fit that narrative is ignored. Can't have the biggest cash generator in turmoil. Dillon's bonus might be affected.

Tim Watson discussed it specifcally on SEN to Gary Lyon noting the bizarre openess of Richo and this being one of the interview highlights about the Dees he gleaned when discussing culture..  Last week he did a special interview for Ch 7 with Richo.

Tim's take was if the ladder exists, and it probably does, why is it secret?

Great observation and surprised/not surprised that media have not run with this.

It’s also subtle messaging to AFL ahead of any additional findings findings in Smith investigation.

My thoughts at the time exactly.  Richo doesn't do random. This was well thought out inside the Dees.

Its a case of now from us of  "...You know that we know...  beware lest you cast the first stone...."

Who supplied Ginnivan his white powder?

The discussion was  on SEN on 22 Feb  and its on SEN'd podcast for their Breakfast show.  Its a 6 minute clip of the show and Tim talks about the hair testing ladder just after Max's part of the clip around 1 Minute 35secs into the clip

Hopefully that works, it did for me. Found with Demon17's guide above. Worth listening too and no surprise not covered broadly in the media. Credit to Tim and Garry for referencing.

Garry's points are also correct. No point complaining (though we are right to be advocating for ourselves)

Speaking of media, why isn’t there a suggestion that the launch of a premiership film by the Pies tonight, a week before the next season starts,  a case of over-celebration/ drinking their own bath water?

Haven't listened yet - what's was Garry Lyons take?

It's been somewhat disappointing for one of our past greats in David Schwarz to go adding to the pile on without any real evidence to speak of:

https://wwos.nine.com.au/afl/news-2024-melbourne-demons-david-schwarz-clayton-oliver-joel-smith-troubles/15b35324-f219-45f1-8be9-49553ebbb778

BTW, from what I recall of the story of Schwartz's influence on club culture with gambling, he's the last one that should be having go at the club on this basis or blasting other player's for their off feild problems - apparently some forms of addiction and abuse are more forgivable than others.  Loved him as a player (On feild), but from what I can see, I think his contribution to the club since has been overly negative and critical at times, which is disappointing.

I think it's about time the AFL step up and defend the MFC a bit more on this one - but they won't, because they'd rather leave us as scape goat than deal with things than have more open and reasonable discussion that spoke about recreational drug use across the industry and comunity in general.

Yeah, nah.  Read the article it says he has no real knowledge to speak of, he's just assuming and adding to the pile on.  If he loves the place, he needs to learn not to be such a loose cannon and just adding to the external pressure.

If he's really concerned, why not get more involved and have a chat to Maxy or Richo?

The whole media is in raptures at the Pies flag. They would be happy for it to happen every year.

He would know more than he is letting on  David is still well connected at the Club.

I have no problem with him having a go, he isn’t lying. It’s been a very poor off season

To drink their own bathwater they would first need to have a bath.

I'm thinking we're ending up at an agree to disagree kinda place here SWYL.

If he's well connected and he cares so much, then why don't he have the info Richo had and/or isn't he talking the same tune as the leadership?

Max, Viney and Goody & Co are the leaders that took us to a flag and 3 top 4 finishes in as many years - something we never really came close to in Schwartz's time at the club.

I'll back them over anything Schwartz has to bleat on about.

I don’t really give a Flying Mate

Richo and the boys are Talking Club Talk ok, Media 101

Don’t underestimate the The Ox, he is able to speak unimpeaded. He still has very strong connections with the Club.
It has been a shocker of a preseason, don’t try and sugar coat it.

You are dealing alot in 'rumors' with these 'strong connections' here.  Who are these suposed connections?

Richo and the boys are playing a Team game, something the Ox didn't do off feild at his time at the club, so he should bit his tounge or get behind them.

I don't give a flying what the media say.  Media said we were metally weak wouldn't make finals in 2021.

I'll rate our pre-season, post seaon - based on on feild results, not media rubbish.

Excuse the naivety but what does ‘being near the bottom of the ladder’ mean? Is it that we have fewer positive results from tests or fewer tests in total?

Has it actually been a shocking pre season? Or has the media told you it’s been a shocking pre season? If you didn’t listen to the nonsense coming out of your tv and radio how would our pre season look?
Aside from Clayton’s troubles, what else have you got beyond accusation? A few injuries that have carried over from last year? We traded well, for need. We look fit. If it’s true we are down the bottom of the testing ladder it would seem it’s all a bit of a blow up. The media are not honest actors. They will do whatever they can to keep their jobs and create “entertainment”. The proof of what kind pre season we’ve had will be how we go this season.

I think David would know a lot about culture. Played with Travis Johnson and Daniel Ward and all three went broke as self confessed gambling addicts.

Plenty of others were seen regularly at racetracks and TAB’s.

Thankfully all three sought help and have turned their lives around.

Yes we have had a poor pre season in the media, but aside from Smith, nothing to do with culture and clearly agenda driven, unless you think a boy’s personal mental health issues are a club culture problem.

I am disgusted at the media treatment of Clarry and several media people should be ashamed of themselves. Michael Warner you are at the head of that queue.

How much have we heard about Carlton’s new recruit Elijah Hollands and his Court drug appearance? How much did we hear about Bailey Smith after an initial mention? Same for Ginnivan. There are plenty of other examples of bad behaviour in the AFL that gets little mention after the first airing if at all.

Certain clubs are treated differently by the media, why.

Yes we have our share of problems, but we are not pariahs, yet treated like one in the media.

There is an obvious agenda out there in footy media land and probably more one.

Garry basically said it's probably true that several clubs have far greater drug related issues (referencing the hair test ladder), but it's irrelevant because Melbourne has been exposed which provides the media sensational things to report on. The club complaining won't change any of that, all they can do is try to get better and point wins on the board. Thats our best opportunity for respite.

As I have longed believed, when it comes ot illicit drugs in sport, partaking isn't the crime, getting caught is.

Absolutely Correct. Winning is the only way to eradicate this pestilence.

I agree with all the above, but I think one key differentiator between Clarry and all those others mentioned is that he's got the most 'Star Power' of any of the aforementioned and to a certain extent that makes him a bigger story for the media to get their claws into.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either.
