It's funny isn't it.

It's now completely accepted that teams are nor going anywhere near a flag without an elite defence.

Footy media bang on about all the time. And every year the brownlow gets, rightly in my view, for being a midfielder award

And then all the media awards go to mids. Coaches award too I guess, but al least defenders get votes.

And then a top 50 from the head footy writer at the hun doesn't include the best defender in the best defence in the AFL.

And has Moore at 22 and weitering at 36.

Curiously he has Tom Stewart at 19. A gun no doubt. Better than Moore, weitering and may? Big call.

Stewart is by far the best defender in the league atm. May probably better 2-3 years ago but given age, degrading agility and the butter fingers, Stewart  has him covered.

He's certainly a gun, but not sure he's by far the best tall defender.

Agree he has Moore and may covered, but I rate weitering very highly.

Stewart you are kidding me right? He doesn't play on anyone. He's a rich man's Lever. May is easily the best defender in the comp. He plays on someone every week and kills it. He's better than Weitering 2. Weitering will probably surpass him in a year or 2 but not now. Moore is the most overrated player in the league another one who plays on no one.

Nailed all of them.

Succinct and spot on. Esp on Stewart.

May is my first pick for the Dee's every day of the week.

In May's most recent game he comprehensively beat the game's current best forward (and IMO in the top 5 of the entire competition).

He's clearly in the conversation for best tall defender in the league, along with Weitering, Andrews and Moore, and should be in anyone's top 50.

I think the ESPN list is a much better reflection of the league.

Yeah, that's a fair point.

As is Werridee's point that May, week in week actually has a direct opponent and usually that is their best forward.

I mean how would Stewart  go head to head with Curnow or Hawkins?

I completely forgot about Andrews. Like Stewart. Moore and Lever he also zones off and intercepts, but i think is probably better one on one than those three players. But no may.

And May can also zone off and intercept when required.

So, i'm sold. May if not the best key defender in the AFL, none are better.

And any top 50 that does not include May is an assessment of the author not May.

No sorry, Stewart is not by far the best defender in the comp. May was ranked No.1 among the league's top 50 players for one-on-ones defended last season. Here's a key stat for you, May has lost only 13% of his defensive one-on-ones in the last two seasons, 23 out of 173. May proved what a champion defender he is in the finals last year.

Butter fingers? What an insult!

“Probably”???!! May was probably better than Stewart 2-3 years ago… Probably…LOLZ.

I’m gonna guess that by “degrading” agility you mean “declining” or “diminishing” or the like. Regardless, his agility is not a problem.

And “butter fingers”????? That’s just straight-up wrong, as well as disrespectful.

There must be two Steven Mays running around coz the one you’re describing isn’t the rock-solid defender who plays for us.

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had
