I think they might have mumbled something about the fact that CJ was tagging Williams... But I could have that wrong. He got a few touches... maybe 15 or so. But I kept losing my connection so I may have missed a few. The commentary wasn't scintillating. One of them was on the ball, but the other was making mistakes willy nilly. Kept calling players by their wrong first names, and making emotional noises like "OOoooooh how was THAT" and "Gee THAT was good" without actually telling us what was going on.

Buckley was quiet, but again may have been picking someone up.

Pickett was VERY damaging and led really well. Was taken on and off the ground a bit, but when he was there he actually played good football. No-one ever talks about his kick. It's sensational.

Frawley was only used sparingly. Didn't hear much about him.

Wheatley, they said, had a very good day. That worries em a bit. He's appalling at AFL level this year, but smashes them in the VFL week-in-week-out. I hope the players who regularly do well at Sandy aren't the same as him. CJ, Newton I'm looking at you.

Bizzell was a rock in defence. VERY good days football.

Neaves was in amongst it, but I'm convinced he's not the player we saw last year. Happy to be convinced differently though.

Garland, though young and prone to drifting in and out of the game, is looking right at home now. Seems to find plenty of it all over the place, and does good things whenever given the opportunity. And chips in with goals, which is good.

Holland got a lot of soft frees, but was VERY strong mopping up by all accounts.

Hughes got better and better as the game wore on, and finished off where Juice couldn't. I always liked him but have always been concerned about where he'll fit, and whether he's big enough. From what I understand he's been a bit down on last year early on this season.

Robbo and Newton I've spoken about. They were probably the pick of the dees, along with Wheatley and maybe Pickett. Holland and Biz didn't disgrace themselves either.

Thank you BRB made a fool out of me there. Newton not in the best, but Neaves is. BTW which Johnson is in the bests there? Was it CJ, or one of the brothers?

Juice chased hard all day, great effort for a big man. Almost took an absolute hanger, then winded himself big time.

Pickett played a good game

Ezra was a little quiet

Frawley got a bit of the ball

Robbo killed his opponent

Biz held his own, at times very frustrating

i thought Wheaters played an ok game, some like Biz a bit frustrating at times.

Chad was fantastic as always, but Robbo was BOG. Great first quarter goal. Kicked our opening 3 i think.

The bests in this seem a bit different to what everyone has been saying. No Robbo or Juice in the bests, Johnson (Chris?) B.O.G?... Holland and Bizzell named in there...

Hmmm... Who wrote this top 6?

Nice to see Neville B.O.G in the Ressies... maybe might actually get a game in the firsts one day...

Wheatley, they said, had a very good day. That worries em a bit. He's appalling at AFL level this year,

I'm a bit sick of the Wheatley bashing. In his games with MFC this year he was good with his kicking being a level above most of his team mates.

Thankfully the FD can form their own view. I think they like Wheatley and whilst he is not a matchwinner he is certainly solid AFL standard when fit.

I reckon you're wrong on this one DD.

I've not seen any of Newton last three games but 2.6 is not usual, he's a good kick. He's really starting to do well at VFL senior level now and while he'll struggle to get a go (with Robbo coming back and Dunn doing well) we are seeing consistent improvement. That's very encouraging and puts a lot of pressure on the FD to give him a go.

Thanks for the reports everyone.

Wheatley was fantastic today. A definate inclusion for next week, he is alot tougher than I've ever given him credit for, his shoulder was giving him trouble but he just ket contesting and getting the footy.

Robbo absolute monty to play next week.

Juice has IT. Robbo went for a screamer in our goal square in the 2nd quater, had the sit and flew for it like Robbo does, only to be out done by Newton who flew even higher, got his hands to the ball but just couldn't hold it. He took 2 marks today where he could have just gone back and had set shots (and most likely goaled) played on both times and missed from about 15meteres it just wasn't working today but the guy is an excitement machine. I've watched a fair bit of Sandringham the last couple of years and at times wondered why people say Juice has an attitude problem, today I saw it for the first time. I was standing in the pocket and he cleanly picked up the ball running flat out at the boundry line deliberatly kicked a grubba along the ground that just missed going through the big sticks. A lot of people would be wrapped they even got foot to ball, he was filthy he missed the impossible goal and he ended up kicking the fence right in front of me. I could see a look of fury in his eyes. The rest of the team started taking their zone (they're alot better at this than Melbourne). Newton was still furious about his point and didn't hold a position, Wheatley started yelling at him and trying to direct him, Newton yelled back at him to get fuc... After that he did get on with it and give 110% all day. Juice is really starting to believe in himself and will kick a a bag of 12 if he doesn't get the call up in the next few weeks. Newton and Russell Roberston really seemed to look for each other today they work really well together and lastly I have never been so excited about a Melbourne listed player.

Chris Jonhson so much talent such a waste. I will be surprised if he ever puts on the red and blue again, such a shame.

Garland really came into it in the last playing off a half back flank. From what I've seen he could be a really damaging footballer in the coming years. He could really complement a tough midfield of Mclean, Jones and Moloney.

Brock was there wathcing with Rivers and I hate to report was still limping.

Medhurst was out there for Williamstown and makes me wonder why Ezra Poyas couldn't make it. Give me the choice of the 2 and I'd take Ezra every time.

Thanks for the reports everyone. Glad to hear Robbo and Pickett played well, although what do you expected, they are far too good for this level.

Very worried about Brock still limping... surely not! :(

Newton swearing at an experienced senior player is not great but it shows passion, and he clearly has enough talent to play AFL. Hopefully he gets himself mentally right as well, because that is just as important as having the right skills.

I'm confident he'll play a few AFL games this year, and hopefully we sign him up for another 2 years before the season is finished.

G'day Everyone.

First of all, thanks for listening to the coverage... more on that later.

It was good day out there at Sandy, bloody good crowd, several thousand in attendence, bit like the good old VFA Days.

Was overcast for most of the day and the breeze favoured the Southern End all day.

The one thing I was suprised about Sandy was how small the ground was, but it did lead to fast football at stages which was good.

I apologise if Myself or Phil didn't get some names across, especially Sandy names in the final quarter.

We were positioned at the back at the Southern End grandstand, and let me tell you looking north in an overcast dark final quarter makes it very hard to tell who is who if you can't spot the numbers on the back of their jumpers.

Maybe we should have given Matthew Newton more credit, I guess we felt a little let down due to some very easy chances he missed.

Oh and with calling him "Roth" and "Bert" it was subtle humour (IE: Bert Newton from Channel Nine and Roth Newton - as business with a jingle about it's name).

I guess we got a little Williamstown biased in the final quarter, but that's because we were hoping for a closer game, we like to back any side that's down and making a charge - like Port did last week against North Ballarat.

The funny thing is over at "The Lulie Street Dash" Collingwood forum, that HATE my guts. Mainly for poking fun of Joffa, and having a crack at some Williamstown Supporters - who off air whinged to Phil that we were calling football loud near them!!!! (and the funny thing was I used to barrack for Willi as a kid cause I was born at Willi Hospital - Don't like them now after that had a crack at me in their forum - And I mean swear words included).

Thanks also to Andrew/Nasher one of the "Officials" here who thanked me for letting people know about the coverage :)

In wrapping up, we haven't got a Sandy game for several weeks, but I knew in the next fortnight or so one is being covered by Casey Radio 97.7 FM - I suggest you go to their website at www.3ser.org.au and send them an email to confirm when they are next calling Sandy.

Thanks again for all your feedback....

Good to see Brock and Jared supporting Sandy today - would have been better to see them jumping on a plane heading west! Very impressed with the way these 2 have so much time for the fans - just really nice blokes the pair of them. Jared spent a fair amount of time playing kick to kick with some of Byron's kids - geez there are enough of them!!!! I have to say I never noticed the limp that was mentioned here earlier.

Each to their own Fan... And I think i may have said too little about Wheatley. I'm trying to cut down on the long posts (and failing miserably). What I meant to say was that earlier this year I saw him play a game out of defence in which he looked better than Hird. He was faster, stronger, smarter and kicked 3 goals from about 60. Then he duly gets promoted and is actually a LIABILITY in the AFL. It's THIS that I was trying to point out. He's played good years in the AFL in the past, but not kept it going... and I disagree that he's a solid AFL player. Just disagree though.... I'll keep your comments in mind.

Great insight Wrecker, and thanks for coming on to mention his behaviour. And It's fascinating isn't it. When I read it at first i was thinking that he could be a problem. But the more I think about it, I wonder what neita would be like as a player if he was given ANY arrogance at all. Reiwoldt, Carey, Dunstall, Brereton... All smartarses... Would having a bull in our little china shop be that bad... just to shake things up? If you said to me you can have a great player, but you have to put up with him being a bit of a Dermie... I think I'd say bring him on...

My understanding is that Ezra's not having made it had little to do with talent or skill if you catch my drift.

No... I don't. Could you expand a little? Oh... you're not flirting with ME now are you? ;)

I'm a fan of Ezra's, and I'd like to know what you mean. If you're duty bound to keeep schtum, then I'd appreciate a PM...

I think that's a first... A radio commentator coming on to apologise for making a blue...

You'll go a long way, my son.

But seriously, you yourself do a fine job there. Shades of Commetti once or twice. I hope you take the opportunity to come on and advertise in the future. Now that we know who you are, we'll be sure to keep our eyes and ears open.

Cheers mate!

1611 generated a lot of discussion here so well done Peter.

I was at the ground myself and must say that in view of the poor season we're having at AFL level it's a revelation to get down to the TBO to watch the Sandy team going round. There are a few quality young kids coming through the ranks. James Frawley looks really good, a key position defender who moves well and does all of the defensive things nicely. Colin Garland wasn't on the ground for all that much time but he looked a genuine prospect. I like Chris Johnson and believe that he's not that far away from a breakthough. The two rookies Hughes and Neaves were also good contributors.

Then there was Juice who is an absolute freak. Missed a couple of sitters and missed a few attempts at hangers but the aspect of his gane that impressed me today was that he worked hard to get the ball and to stop his opponents when necessary. Could easily have kicked 6 but it was his general play around the ground that impressed me. However, with Robbo coming back to Melborne next week, it's unlikley that Newton will get a call up for Melbourne just yet.

On Paul Wheatley, he was fine today, linked up well and delivered the ball to advantage most of the time on a day where good disposal was made a bit more difficult because of the winds swirling around and changing direction. I wouldn't bag him on his performances this year. He's fighting to keep his place on the list, has had problems with his shoulder and, once or twice, seemed uncomfortable. He needs to be injury free to be fully effective.

Thanks to Wrecker and everyone else for their reports.

While everyone has commented on Newton, any impression on Johnson who has been listed by BRB as B.O.G? Wrecker why wont CJ pull on the red and blue again?

Medhurst has not made it and frankly his current contract with the Pies could well be his last. Poyas is a very good VFL footballer who wasa unable to bridge the gap to the higher level...period.

Disappointing to hear about McLean though.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
