Didn’t look up to it on debut. Looks a full preseason or two away from it. We rushed him on debut, and he didn’t look up to scratch, and subsequently, was dropped. Shown good signs on the weekend. But he’ll derive a lot of benefit from a proper preseason. Then it will be easier to see how good he is. He’s a young player who needs core work, strength, and pace work. Could be something in a couple years.

Not defending this, but explaining: Rising star nominations mid/later in the season are effectively on a ‘body of work’ rather than a single game. Darcy likely came very close to a nomination in earlier rounds and missed, and has now ‘accumulated’ one. Kolt can still get one, 2-3 more decent games may do it.

That’s unfair though because it shouldn’t matter what round it is, it should be even ie. every round it’s based on just that game. Otherwise the player who wins it in round 1 is the only player for the year who’s been judged on that one game, unlike subsequent winners.

Worse, the round 0 winner was out of 4 games….

But, doesn’t  really compromise the award though. Yes you need to be nominated to win, but an early/sneaky nomination won't win you the whole thing.

I think what his critics perhaps don't factor in is that he is given specific roles.

And far from goody playing favourites he's a best 22 lock because he does the jobs goody asks him to do.

Sparrow has always been playing the same role since he came into the team. I would doubt that people don't factor it in. A lot of people expect a player to have a 'break out' game where they magically improve by 20% and continue at that level forever.

Sparrow has slowly progressed each year until this year. He hasnt got better this year, and thats fine as every team would have Sparrow on their list as that defensive 4th inside mid.

I think most people see his potential and want him to progress past that role. It's right there for the taking with Oliver playing below his best and Petracca out. With his speed and power he could push to an A grade player, but he isn't. Rivers is pushing into that role as he is a smoother, smarter player.

Sparrow is a foot soldier. Albeit a good one. I want more from him. I'm hoping he continues his 5% increment improvement next year and this year is just a plateau.

The guy will leave nothing on the table. Some kids have impressive talent and don’t get the most out of it, others achieve success through sheer grit and determination. Sparrow is in the later group. He is still skilful but I’d say he is average in decision making and ball use and that’s ok - there is a role for him to play.

He didn't set the world in fire on debut but he wasn't alone in that game as we were smashed by the Lions. Pretty hard for a kid to come in and look up to it when the team was smacked from pillar to post. I don't like bringing kids in and then dropping them (not really a fan of how they've managed Brown either to be honest) I'd like them to get a block of games unless they are only brought in to cover short term injuries and there is no spots available.

Anyhow he's getting his chance now and I think showing he can contribute despite being such a youngster. No doubt he will only improve/become more consistent with a couple of preseasons under his belt.

His decision making can leave me annoyed at times. I think we are on the the same page. I'm not bagging him out. I've said all teams would have him. I've been happy with his slow but steady progress, but it hasn't progressed this year and I'm worried it won't. I get the impression that others think the same but just can't articulate their point of view.

I would like him to move into a full time inside midfielder and use his speed and strength to attack and accelerate away from the contest. Stop being the negator and start being the threat.

Its right there for him. He has the tank now. He has the power. He has the speed. He doesn't have the elite disposal but with the other things he is more than enough. He has got inside midfield time over others in the team.

I want more from him.

Jones set up a lot of very good GWS plays. If you watched the game he was great and well deserved. And as another mentioned he ended with 18 and a goal, 2 goal assists, 7 score involvements. And vs a much better opponents than Kolt did.

Not taking anything from Kolt, but Jones deserved the nod.

He will certainly be a different player next year with strength and endurance. I can see him and Trac swapping positions as 50/50 mid forwards. 
One thing I am really pleased with the last few months has been Goodwins willingness to give kids a taste of senior footy. This has been my knock on Goody for years that he hasn’t expanded the playing group. 
All of Kolt, Brown, AMW, Howes, Turner and Windsor will be regulars next year.

The Rising Star is a BS award

Virtually no one nominated after rd 10 has won the award.

It was originally the 1st yr player most likely to become a star and somewhere it morphed into a best first year player award. Two different things.

Why have an award where over half of the nominations cant win it?

Or where a potentially great player is not even nominated because on each particular week some rookie had an outstanding game.

And furthermore the suspension to Reid is a joke that he is ineligible. He is head and shoulders above the others.
