I get the Windsor pick but this one has me scratching my head 

Not sure with the existing small forwards and the addition of those two above this was a pressing need

Maybe they think he can evolve into a midfielder

    Our existing small forwards are B graders except for Kossie.

    We don't really have a medium forward that can play midfield besides Trac, I reckon it makes sense

    Tholstrup isn't a small forward. He's 188cms and plays high half forward. In time he'll become part of the midfield rotation. Consider him a forward half player.

    He's shown great ability to be a link up player in a similar mould to ANB. The hope would be he's got attributes to become more explosive and impactful.

    If I was a winger or half forward at the Dees I would be very nervous about my spot in the 23. 
    Caleb Windsor  and Kolt Tholstrup look by highlights and footy info a whole new standard of ( other than Kossie and Lingers ) for our team. 

    Caleb an all day runner and ball carrier plus goal finisher who will light up the other wing at the G and Kolt a totally X factor half forward/ mid in time with a license to excite annoy and embarrass the opposition.

    Like the  idea of Kolt crashing the blokes that Rooy has missed. Bit more weight on both and they will be cherry ripe for the fight. No more boring connections or forward thrusts!

    Two more  gems in the Jason Taylor tradition!

    Welcome aboard Koltyn Tholstrup at 186cm (6’1”) and 86kg you are already AFL size another young bull at the Dee’s, love it.

    McAdam is a legitimate goal kicker with X factor. Billings recruitment is a headscratcher. Both are 28yo, so we still need to look to the future.

    Billings cost nothing, has great experience and good skills.

    You need a squad of players to win a flag. And multiple 18yo's won't cut it

    Welcome Koltyn. Can’t wait see how you career develops at the Dees. 
     

    Just compared his profile to Humphreys from last year. Although not exactly a like for like there’s a lot of similarities. Both mid/forward types  tough and hard at it, have scoreboard impact, power, kicking penetration and good marking ability. JT clearly had a type in mind. 
     

    Unlike others I think Koltyn is a a very good chance to make an impact next year. Already has lots of experience playing against seniors and is already in great physical shape. Doesn’t seems like much will bother him. 
    Had an injury interrupted season last year, good preseason and  I don’t see why he can’t push for a spot early next year.

    The same thing was said about Grundy. Every list spot is valuable, and we already have a bunch of experienced players who'll struggle to be best 22.

    Billings hasn't played well for 2 years. What makes you think he'll return to his best?

    I'd suggest we identified wing and half forward as an area we really need to improve. Maybe it's about *gasp* forward connection.

    We don't know what will be available at the draft so we traded for Shane McAdam who can play as a medium forward, take marks and kick goals. He's 28 and hopefully will have an immediate impact. But he has a ceiling that we know. We also pick up Billings cheap. It's a dice roles. If his body holds up we know what he offers at his best. 

    At the draft we pick up two kids who we hope can have impact in the short term, but realistically have 3-5 years before they hit their straps, like all kids.

    Tholstrop is a high half forward, with great endurance and agility, like ANB, but also super strong in the contest, a better kick. His ceiling is a player that is a bit of an ANB/Petracca hybrid.

    And we add Windsor, a winger with burst pace and great skills. Plus the ability to kick at pace. He'll start in the rotations, HFF, HBF, wing. I expect they see him as an upgrade on Jordan with potential to take Hunters spot on the wing.

    It would be hard to compare with so many AFL affiliated clubs in the VFL, and only 2 in the WAFL. 

    The AFL affiliated clubs in the WAFL don't dominate, and the Eagles 2s didn't win a game this year. At VFL level, non-affiliated clubs like Werribee and Williamstown performed well this year.

    It makes so much sense to get a half forward with grunt and connect.  We don't have one of those with BOTH attributes. Also, Langdon has been nothing like his pre-rib injury form, which might be the kick in the pants he needs.  Anyone can run all day but you need to be damaging as well.

    I'm listening to SEN WA this morning and hearing the interview with Koltyn Tholstrup. Koltyn is overwhelmed and very grateful to come to the Melbourne Football club. I have no doubt he will play senior Football next year 2024 and will have an immediate impact.

    These two are now coming into the peak of their career in terms of age and experience. 

    They certainly won't be around forever though, and both still have significant question marks over them IMO.

    Probably a good thing Adelaide took Curtin. Takes the heat and desperation away from chasing Petty.

    I hope Sestan can take the next step. He's not small, 188cm, can take a good mark, is hard at the contest, and certainly knows where the goals are. I hope he can put in a good uninterrupted preseason.

    Because we have an elite midfield and elite defence, and need a much better forward half cohort. We've gone about addressing that by giving ourselves options.

    Koltyn is explosive, McAdam has x factor, Billings has ball use, and Windsor has run, carry and ball use to keep Hunter and Langdon honest on the wing, or play half back and allow a Bowey or McVee to play higher up the field.

    One thing to remember is he was playing high half forward as he was playing WAFL seniors. If he was playing Colts he more than likely would have been playing mid and been picked as a mid. Playing seniors in that positioned showed he has real potential to develop into a somebody who can play both positions at a high level. Anyone that can do that well is a real game changer.  ie Dusty, trac, Danger

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors.
