AFLW: Rd 06 vs Adelaide

Recommended Posts

We fell asleep in the second and third quarter. Huge 4th quarter effort not enough to retrieve the situation.

Umpiring atrocious. Clown show, particularly in the 3rd quarter.

Zanker was magnificent. Best game in the red and blue for her.

Harris huge in the ruck in last but quiet up to then.

This loss means we’ll have to win the flag in Adeliade most likely (getting ahead of myself potentially but those were easily the best 2 teams in the comp playing today). We can do it but it makes it so much harder.

Anyways, great game and advertisement for AFLW. Pity about the result.

Go Dees

Once again, I’d make a case for umpiring determining the outcome of the game. Too many absolute shockers that went the Crows way. Still, we should hardly expect the W game to be better than the men’s.

Too many decent players down today. Our best were Zanker, Goldie,Hanks and Purcell.  We need Hore down in the forward line but I suppose having paxman out led to her in the midfield. Not too worried by result as you are always going to lose one.

Eliza West is in poor form which leaves too much for Purcell to do.

Backline top heavy as well, think we’ll see Chaplin in for Colvin (or Birch).

Half forwards and mids couldn’t get in to the game today. Pressure and possibly wind just messing with our uncontested game?

But we’re a run and carry side and if we don’t establish that game we just look hopeless at half forward going to bigger and we’ll positioned defenders

Hopefully North can do us a solid and take them down. They have the quality.

Zanker, great game today.

Goldy might be a bit hit and miss with the skills at times but really important with opposition big bodies around the ball.

She doesn't let up, love the way she goes about it.

Harris important in the ruck last Q.

Campbell needs to come back in next week to give us a bit more flexibility.

We have had it a bit easy so far this season so hopefully this is a bit of a wake up and not a trend.

The next few weeks will tell.

Disappointing result.  I reckon their bigger bodies got them over the line, but only just, and despite the fact we were too slow and reactive in the middle two quarters.
The umpiring was a disgrace.  I won’t say it cost us the game, but you could easily mount an argument that that was the case.

Mick finally took Mithen out of the middle in the final quarter, and put Goldrick in there.  Small wonder we started getting the ball in the final quarter. Lily was simply pushed aside by the big Adelaide mids for 3/4's.  We missed Paxy big time.

We fell into the old trap of insufficient ruck coverage, again against the best other side in the competition.  Pearce cannot run out a whole game, and we have to pilfer Harris from the forward line to cover.  Campbell should be an automatic in.  And we run the same silly tactic of playing the ruck a kick behind ( same as the mens side) when defending instead of rucking.  It meant Gillard had to take the ruck in the backline, leaving the Adelaide FF free to operate unattended.

Great game from Eden.  Especially against the best defenders in the league.  Even more so because we had to use Hore and Harris up the field to cover the other holes.

Such a disappointing performance for 2.5 quarters. Far too many passengers in such a big game, and some underwhelming coaching as well.

Playing down the grandstand wing all day was predictable and played into Adelaide's hands. Our centre square line up didn't work until the last quarter and our defence is too slow and reactive.

Zanker was excellent, Goldrick and Mackin worked hard, but not many others played well.

Gah to be honest, I felt that one coming even aside from the usual pre-game paranoia! Hard to go from weeks of poor opposition to a proper outfit like the Crows. We just didn't go up the level and couldn't handle their pressure and physicality. Once they had it in their control, we couldn't find a way to possess it and win it back to our terms. Way too reactive during the middle portion of the game and too many players had a down day at the wrong time.

It's almost a relief to have the streak(s) over, and maybe the players will feel that too on some level. We've seen what real opposition does to our game style, and will need to remember how to work through that (again!). Frustrating, though, that Adelaide won in exactly the way you'd have expected them to. It seems we wanted to back our game - next time we meet, we'll play it differently. Hopefully. I'm heading rapidly into 'loss we had to have' territory.

Positives:

That was the game we've known was coming for Zanker for five years now. She's had break-out games before but that was ultra impressive. Bodywork, positioning, clunking everything, kicking straight. The thing is, you just know she's kicking herself for the one she missed!

The fight back. It's all you can ask for when a team digs itself a hole, but it doesn't always happen. They put it all on the line but it was too little too late. Kudos to Goldrick, Gay and B.Mackin for their four quarters.

Matchday experience:

Aside from the loss, it was great to see so many Dees fans out there, especially the young kids. Could have done without the constant crowd rev-ups and blaring music. There were people near me and my friends who went to hang out in the carpark at halftime because the music was too loud! We have the best cheersquad in the AFLW, just let them and the actual game happening create the atmosphere!!

Sure missed Paxy today. And they might not be available next week since the mishap with the dog has resulted in potential concussion protocols being in place. ☹️

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
