PREGAME: Rd 24 vs Sydney

Fox have just announced the expected Coll vs Melb final will likely be on Thursday night. As was the case mid year, this means once again Melbourne will be the only team with a less than 12 day break,  meaning any concussed player will miss the next final. Why are we continually disadvantaged this way when it's not necessary?

Surely we can go to the AFL and complain. Absolutely disgusting. Friday night should be the go.

Tommo is travelling with the team up to the Sydney.

I thought they may have put Tommo into Casey so as to have an experienced backman there, and to make it more probable that Casey have a game when MFC have a bye.

As others have said, not much between him and Disco.

So with Tommo as emergency, there goes that theory.

I am not too concerned with that.

Our routine for a long break is 12 days.

A loss and we get a longer break than the opponent.

Win and we won't know what to do with our time (good recovery time going into prelim).

I know, one game at a time!

A concussion isn't necessarily the main issue.

I was hoping we didn't play Syd on a Sunday.  When I saw the round 24 fixture I thought it would hurt us as our most likely opp (Coll) would get an extra two days rest and they would always choose the Thrusday night to drive home that advantage greatly reducing our chances of winning the QF.

So I'm hoping that Lions or Port lose this weekend giving a fairer break for both teams especially vs Port.  I have no fear of playing at the Gabba or AO and winning!!

What a load of rubbish. I'll be in the air so won't be able to attend or see it if on a thurs night.

Every week, an AFL  player misses a game with concussion. As Jaded said, for the sake of a change to a Friday night it takes it out of the equation.  How concerned will you be if Trac gets concussed tomorrow and can't play first final?

Who is "they"?  Are you saying that Collingwood (not the AFL) decide which day they play their first final?

Yes, Coll.  As the top team they choose when the game is held after AFL 'consultation'.

Ditto whoever finishes 2nd, altho less of a say, which is why the Petracca non goal hurts us - we should be second and have that right.

Tommo is clearly better than Turner at both VFL and AFL Look at the stats!! He may be the future but Tommo is the present

Don't think the FD have necessarily chosen one over the other Kent.

Probably more likely match ups and they want to give Disco as much exposure as they can at AFL level to get used to the step up plus try and start gelling with May, Lever etc in order to have him as ready as possible if needed for finals.

Again if match ups warrant or one of Lever or Tomo go down (spit spit ...dashes salt shaker over shoulder)

He was also in vn form against the Lions so he put his hat in the ring.

I honestly find that hard to believe, Luci.  Do you have a source?

Not a written one but it has been the practice in the last few years where the AFL 'consults' the top team eg  In 2021 we had the choice of where to play the QF - part of the privilege of finishing top.  We chose AO even tho the next game would be in Perth and may have reduced travel time.

If we have a concussion we may be able to lobby the AFL for a Fri or Sat night game.  Coll will choose what is best for them and their members so I'm hoping we don't finish 4th.  I would rather an away QF where we have a better chance of winning than an away PF where we start behind the 8 ball with a short 'bye' pre the QF and weekly games thereafter.

I also doubted Laurie's credentials on what I have seen at Casey and the result....? Plays 1 game and gets dropped! Yeah right! I maintain my stance mucking around in round 24 with experiments is not conducive to successful footy! In my eyes Turner has shown little at Casey to have got a game at this stage! Would have preferred getting a game into T.MAC and swinging Smith back!

That addresses the "where" but not the "when".  I'm sure the AFL schedules the actual games.

Your example is also based on a COVID year where the MCG wasn't an option.

I still don't believe that any club can choose what day they play on.

Stats are irrelevant. Turner hasn't even played a full game yet. What a ridiculous strawman...

The point was the AFL consults the top club and it has privileges.

I believe last year Geelong chose the Saturday night as it would help more of its members get to the game vs a Fri or Thur night.

I'm sure you're right, mate, but that seems ridiculous that the top team can basically potentially manufacture a shorter turnaround for their opponent. Hugely unfair, despite the fact they've done the hard yards and won the minor premiership during the H&A season.

It also doesn't make commercial sense.

Surely more ppl will be able to get to a Friday night final vs a Thurs night and also watching as many won't have work the next day, kids can stay up .

Fair enough Luci but, in the absence of any supporting evidence for your belief, I remain unconvinced.

Crikey ds, not sure why you would be surprised...we all know that the AFL pulls out its 'special herbs and spices' whenever it suits them

It isn't a 'manufactured' shorter turnaround per se.  The turnaround will always be two days diff for a Coll/Dees QF regardless of when it is played.  It is the round 24 schedule that creates the diff which is why I'm disappointed we play tomorrow and not today.

Playing after the Pies, PA and Brisbane has it's advantages

It does seem odd to take Tomlinson as an emergency when he should be playing at Casey.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
