Good changes so far, great to see Tomlinson straight back into the 22 (four weeks too late).

I suspect the final bench will be:

Melksham, Rivers, Hibberd, Jordon with Smith the sub.

I think Chandler will replace Spargo. Canโ€™t see us replacing Hibberd with him unless they want to put Bowey forward?

I think we have enough small forwards already, not sure Chandler is needed with Pickett and ANB in the team already (plus Woewodin).

Alternatively, Smith could be in the team and Hibberd the sub.

Grundy was named in the squad last week IIRC.  Pretty sure he'll be playing at Casey.

Good to see Taj Woewodin named in the starting line up.

He played majority forward last week but I'd like to see him play more midfielder time.

Has a touch of class that would be needed on the inside and out.

Hi all, can I please ask if anyone could give me a simplistic, approximate run down of what our likely draft picks are this upcoming draft?

Whats the deal with Freo's pick/final placing?

I know this is not the thread (happy with the changes by the way, would have been bewilderment from me if Petty was back in) but just throwing this little question out there?

Pleased for Tomlinson on a number of fronts.

he may be elsewhere next year. A great chance to enhance his employment.

play him for the next few weeks at least.

cannot think of anything more stupid than playing a guy who cannot last the game out

in a final, imagine if he breaks down in the first quarter because he was underdone physically. Tomlinson may not be the preferred player. But he will play the whole game.  Looking at the pies game.

I guess we will see what we see!!

Go Dees

Hope Laurie plays, deserves an opportunity to pass or fail at the top level. I think weโ€™ve found one in Woewodin. Good to see him staying in the lineup

This is a real danger game. Nicholls is one of the umpires.

You'd have to think that of the players on the extended bench melk rivers and jj are locks.

And surely chandler comes in for spargs.

Smith as sub

Hibbo and brodie cool their jets at cold Coburg.

All you need to know about the state of football journalism #2

So i decided to listen to the SEN Sanderson strategy slot on catch up.

First topic for discussion - Brodie Grundy.

Whateley played goodies answer to the the first question of the presser, which is about Grundy.

Goody notes the hysteria (his word) in the media and that Brodie will be back.

Chief hysteric, Whateley, doesn't bother defending the completely reasonable charge of hysteria.

And Sanderson basically disregards what he has just heard from the lips of Goody and says Grundy unlikely to return to the ones this season. I mean the senior coach had just said he will be back for pete's sake.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to say at least something like, well Goody was adamant he would be back, but i have my doubts?

5 more mins wasted on rubbish - remembering this is a segment supposedly about strategy.

They eventually get to the game and it is all about the Lions. Sanderson's take is they got on top becuase they beat us in the contest and clearances. That's it. That's where the analysis largely ends. And then goes on to say how good he thinks the Lions are and that they a real 'smokey' to win the flag (some smokey - they are third fav)

No respect for the dees effort to come back from 5 goals to win - the lions went too defensive apparently.

No talk about what we did to wrest momentum back - other than we won contested ball.

Fair dinkum, this is supposed to pass as analysis?

I very rarely listen to footy analysis outside of the Demonland podders. This is why.

Stop doing it to yourself, Binners! ๐Ÿคฃ

This.

Would also love it and think it'd spark us up.

With Hibberd coming back, Mcvee and Salem are a great pairing for run, carry and ball use coming out of D 50.

I think Bowey could be a real weapon centre forward and if not this season, I hope he is moved there next year.

I'm not saying this won't happen but Bowser pretty much ruled it out.  At least for this season anyway.

Looking like it could be....

Tomo for Petty

Bill for Spargs

Sadly, not the state of merely sports-journalism.

Iโ€™m a big supporter of the ABC, despite it being such a grind watching their increasingly-amateurish journalists struggle.

The Age used to be a tolerable read, but that was a while back.

Internationally, itโ€™s a complete mess as journalism suffers under the powers of mass consumption paired with minimal financial input (as has happened in my industry-music). While genuine journalists are asking themselves some big questions about the tenability of their vocations, they are being replaced by people who just want to partake in some vague version of โ€œentertainmentโ€.

But I always struggle when trying to recall any sports-related interview that gave me something resembling genuine insight, and wasnโ€™t just guarded, predictable musings from the same old script.

I think we need to exhume Jack Dyer and Lou Richards and get the coaches answering some of the real questions.

Yep, it is such a noble profession and so important to hear the truth and stories that need to be told. It's eroding very quickly and it's quite sad and disturbing.

Anyways..... Great to see Tommo named.

He did some nice things, but was completely lost in the zone more than once.

I thought he'd be dropped this week, but I'm glad they're persisting. Only one way to learn your way through a zone. It's to play in it more often.

It's not like small forwards at Casey are really pushing their case strongly.

I'd like to see it too, but I'd rather we started rolling him through the midfield first.

Right! Take a look at Garry Lionโ€™s interview of Cripps. He might have talked more than Cripps.

And whatโ€™s with interviewers asking questions and providing at least two alternative answers for the interviewee, who invariably decides that โ€œitโ€™s a both of both, reallyโ€?

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscrayโ€™s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last weekโ€™s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
