Average output from too many.  5 or 6 played very well but we are not playing at our best

I'm projecting through to September and the 3 teams we will need to beat to win the flag. Tonight's performance won't measure up in my view

The saints had the short break too but the Eagles are a genuine training run.

Credit Goodwin for playing Tracc forward and bringing in 3 fresh runners.

We also allowed the Saints to have a half forward and sat a defender back. In that way we did adsorb and didn’t allow them any easy shots at goal aside from when we coughed it up.

Defensively: 8/10 for coaching, selection, execution.

The ball movement all over the ground: 4/10 at best given the Saints surely would’ve been blowing from half time

GW$ sounds as if they struggled to get over Hawks.

Thought ball use going forward was generally much better, but by hand they were way cleaner, thought our decision making by hand was terrible. to me they seemed to be much better and faster when the ball was on the ground. Thanks to the back line they couldn't convert.

Do people expect we’ll be 100% efficient every week? I feel like a lot of people here need to reset their expectations a little bit.

The saints were up for it, high pressure. We will miss kicks.

Sure, the rucks are way off. Rivers kicking out of D50 is heart stopping. Spargo doesn’t get it enough etc etc. But we won against a good team in a high stakes game.

Plus.. there’s a system at play. Not everyone can get a heap of the footy.

Melksham played the Fritsch role nicely… and whoever said brayshaw needs to go back to VFL earlier… give me the spellest of spells.

Thought Gus played a good game. Was in all the right positions and influenced the contest. Turned it over a little as did everyone but did his job.

You can also spare me the talk about DE efficiency and if a certain someone wants to drop a link to an article on this subject for the umpteeth time then maybe they can better spend their freedom looking up the difference between effective and efficient in the dictionary.

Even if he had have played very well, we've still got deficiencies elsewhere

We are not going to win the flag with that sort of overall output.  It's enough to defeat average to good teams but the best? 

So, as always, it's all about the team, DS

It's not about any individual

For instance, Brayshaw was good early and finished off well but made a few non-costly errors early in the game.  But he can play better, no doubt

And he is not on his own because it's ditto for at least a dozen others including our 2 ruckmen

Overall Gus was good but jeepers those early handballs were frightening and for an experienced player they don’t make sense. Same goes for Riv’s early kicks.

Same goes for Gawn and Grundy’s entire night.

Really it’s probably indicative of just how little confidence we have in our ball movement due to lack of talent through the midfield (we don’t have good handball receive players aside from the wings peeling wide) and lack of confidence in the forwards.

Backline did some excellent defending but geez they have no idea how they want to move the ball. Credit to them for actually switching it a few times but no cohesive plan. And the panicking on contested loose balls is just embarrassing from all involved. 

With Tracc playing forward it was pretty much Viney and a VFL midfield and that includes both rucks. All our mids had a go but they just aren’t very good. Gus and JJ had some moments at least.

Forward line showed signs of life but Melksham still looks long odds to actually do anything more than a little cameo. Brown completely cooked after a half. Grundy’s a waste of a body down there and Gawn not much better.

To say a win is disgusting is quite frankly a disgusting thing to say. Sometimes you have to wonder why you bother supporting this team .

Not sure how your second half of your post is relevant to the first.

Chandler was average to bad for a few weeks. Found himself dropped tonight. Spargo - who was dropped before that - came back in.

Kossie has to be on just about his last chance, and for his own good. Go back to the VFL and have 20 and 3 and get his touch back.

Kozzie was poor in the first half and much better around the contest in the second half. Also remember he had Webster on him big chunks of that game who is a bloody good lock down defender.

Just close your eyes and imagine for a moment that for some of ANBs possessions, instead it's McVee having the ball instead. Reckon you can put another 2 to 4 goals on the scoreboard?  He's made around 600 decisions this year and I reckon 598 have been the right ones.  Weekly post, wasted playing a full game in the back line.  See you next week.

We really should have put the Saints away early

For fleeting moments we look terrific and then we lapse back to being just average

It's like we put our foot down for a bit and then ease off

But to win big the pedal has to be flat to the floor

All credit to the undermanned Saints. Imagine what would have happened if we had lost Petracca in the first minute, quickly followed by May and Viney. Yes, we were a mix of good and bad, but May and Petracca were awesome against pretty smart opposition. Two superb pressure goals from acute angles by the underrated Melksham. But what on earth does Goodwin do about Kozzie? On that showing he'd be lucky to be an emergency for Casey.

Each game you're looking for signs where you think we can compete come the pointy end of the season.

To me, the backline is doing very well, and that's it. May, Lever, Petty, Salem and McVee all did well again. The rest is a huge concern. We lost contested and uncontested possessions, the inside 50 count, the centre clearances, contested marks, marks inside 50, etc.

Steven May just looked confident tonight, and I reckon the performance reflects that.

Can at times look almost proppy, but if he brings tonight’s mental attitude weekly, he gives us so much.

Now can he go chat to his ‘brother’ Kozzie?

Looks almost disinterested.

What a woeful performance if they kicked straight like we did the Saints would have won. What a game by May hate to see how bad we would be without him. 21 is a distant memory. Not good enough to win the flag this year. Kossie must be dropped.

@Superunknown did you get on the saints @ $2.50 because of our importants outs and all.

The focus for Judd is getting 5 more kicks in his current role.

We lack class at half forward, that’s true. Woey has a little something, we know how good Pickett and Spargo can be. We want Tracc forward more. We miss Fritsch and we need to recruit some quality mid/forward.
