There's no way Smith is being picked as a forward.  Some of these suggestions are laughable

Goodwin has mentioned him in multiple press conferences. As I've said previously, I don't rate Smith, but let's see what happens.

From what I’ve seen he leads hard, jumps at the ball and tackles when it’s on the deck.

Obviously decision making isn’t great and there’s still way too many times where he has that costly pause before he does something, but at least he has the physical tools.

Our best footy this year has come when Petty and JVR do enough to keep defenders honest and contribute at ground level. If that’s the job it’s starting to look more suited to Joel than one of the old guys who can’t move. Although I suspect Goody’s next move is back to Melk for similar reasons.

I reckon JVR and Chandler are one more quiet game away from getting dropped, if they aren't dropped this week.

Chandler was tremendous through to the North game (aside from the Brisbane and Essendon losses) but his output and influence has waned significantly since the GC game. I was surprised he had as many as 13 touches and 5 tackles last week, which should at least see him selected this week.

JVR is only having cameo moments and he had a really poor game last week. I could live with a 10 possession/2 mark performance given his inexperience but it was the costly free kicks he gave away.

I would consider BBB for JVR on the hope that he's one of those players that plays better at AFL level due to the better service on offer.  On the other hand, perhaps he's genuinely cooked as an AFL player, and both parties might have to have a chat before he goes on for next season.

Having watched Casey last week the disposal coming his way was fine. he's done. can't get his hands below his knees. Happy to be proven wrong on this one though as he's just what we need atm.

Chandler’s good games have stored more than enough brownie points to guard against being dropped this soon.

I’m not sold on the JVR-TMac combo but if we’re dropping one IMO it should be TMac.

This is where the debate is but who replaces him? Smith... not the same type of player

Do you play JVR in the TMac role and then play Smith or BBB in the deeper forward role.

To win we need 5-6 goals from the small forwards (Kozzie, Chandler and Spargo) and the same from the three tall forwards. Then you get the remaining 4-5 from Petracca and the other mids giving you 15 odd goals.

If one of these three groups fail you need someone to kick a bag by themselves. Realistically only Fritsch and Kozzie are capable of that effort.

In my OP, a young forward line needs guidance just like a backline does. For that reason i'm leaning towards Macca or Melksham to be in. I would like to see Melksham in the following week as well to maybe play his hundred against Collingwood and win. He and  Hibberd are tough and they equalise other teams tough players. For that matter so is Sparrow. Grundy will be ok.

I'm also looking forward to having Clarry in the box this week because he will make a contribution at ground level like we probably will not experience before..

Que?

Not picked full stop?

Or not as a forward despite training as a forward over the preseason and playing forward at Casey for half a season?

I've seen one poster on this thread state that Woewodin will debut with no attribution to anyone or anything official. I've then seen other posters say that he's playing but don't know whether they're basing that on the statement in that post or whether something has been announced. So, simple question: Has the club stated anywhere that Woewodin will be playing?

I have heard Shane won’t be doing his Assistant Coach duties at Wesley College vs Trinity on Saturday as he will be in Melbourne.

This isn’t from the horses mouth, but source is pretty good, so I suspect Taj will debut

As a forward.  Just because he's played forward at VFL level for eight weeks doesn't mean he's any good in that position.  Also, AFL level is big step up from VFL

I'm still confused.

You said he is no chance of being picked as a forward, implying he is a chance to be picked in another role (otherwise the qualifier is not needed).

If Smith plays it'll be as a forward. The club gave him another contract and sent him to the forward line. They did that because they think that's his best chance of having an impact at AFL level. I'm not sure I agree with any of it but that's what's going down. Tonight's selection is intriguing. I think it's likely TMac will stay and the only changes will be Sparrow and Woewodin but we'll know soon. If TMac does play and has a howler and Smith kicks a few for Casey again then next week may see him in the big league.

If we have to resort to Joel Smith as a forward we've got big problems

I have gone on Record NUMEROUS times here suggesting that he is more a pure forward that CAN play. Severely hampered by injuries he is kicking goals at Casey. I would prefer him to T.Mac and maybe even JVR. The other one who should come in is BBB.

I also think T Mac survives.

Remember it was he that slotted that tremendous 50 metre goal in the driving rain at the 18 minute mark of the last quarter when none of the others could hit the side of the barn. A two goal game was a serviceable performance.

If our forward line stinks the joint up on Saturday, then Smith will probably get a chance as and we'll continue to bemoan Petty's absence. That will be the 7th different combination of key forward in 12 weeks.

They main reason they beat us last time was because Steven May was subbed off mid game.

And the last time they played at the G they could only manage 2.2 to half time of a semi final and were pathetically overwhelmed.

I’m backing our fitness to run over the top of them and Gawn to expose Darcy going forward!

There's little at Casey.. perhaps they will get desperate and try Joel Smith up front

Bowey out allows Sparrow back in

Could well be no change

I'd actually hope that JSmith gets a run up forward ... a swingman for BBB during the game - or down back (somewhere) where he was morphed into backman territory - due to the short-term loss of Petty. Sparrow - straight in - plays tough and is rilly handee looking at the sticks.

We also didn't have langdon and Petracca was sick the whole game and played majority up forward.

Was listening to the Footyology podcast this arvo while working and they mentioned Fremantle scalped us last year at the G.  I was fuming that they didn't remember this context!  Granted, couldn't argue with their statement that our season went into a downward turn after this game...

True. But if you recall in our 21 year. Gawn was ticking off teams he wanted to get back, which is an aspect I love of his leadership. He values the history and his own recent experience.

Expect a big game from him and a few others, I reckon we’ll be out for blood and No oliver may give a few hungry kids a chance to have a crack at the top job.

They did scalp us (I forgot Petracca was crook and langdon didn’t play).

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
