Maybe something will be done, I’m not sure we’d be informed of the outcome either way. The sad thing is it seemed to me that the other (mostly long-term) cheer squad members weren’t as affected as I was. They’ve seen way worse. They’ve had food and drink (and cups of urine!) thrown at them. They’ve been spat on more times than they care to remember, another reason why sitting close to the aisle is not ideal. They once had a Collingwood supporter make his way to them from three bays away solely to punch one of our boys in the head! And this wasn’t in the 70s when it was anything goes. These things happened in the last decade. I guess I’ll soon be as hardened as the others which is good, but it’s also sad since Friday night changed something. It almost broke my spirit. Almost.

Anyways I really appreciate having Demonland, somewhere to feel support from people who understand, as opposed to everyone else in my life telling me I should rein in my involvement with the DA. A huge cyber hug to you awesome ppl. 💕

How the actual feck is this type of behavior allowed at the football? Or anywhere in a lawful society?

I am beyond confused why anyone would put up with that.

It was always rifraff looking for a blue. All the cheer squad would support each other. That group feeling was unreal, rough at times but a bond.

This still happens, MD. Cheer squads are incredibly close and share an awesome bond. As you say it’s the other supporters who give us grief. Packing up on Friday night sucked so much. We’d lost the match, it was raining heavily (still) and everything weighed so much more through being waterlogged. We were wet through and had numb hands which made zipping up flag bags etc. really difficult. All this while having to listen to their theme song and their supporters celebrating. But this was almost enjoyable compared to the feeling of fear during the attack.

We keep backing our ‘system’ to win, but this relies on us keeping the ball under control and more in our forward half.  We dont seem to have ‘gears’ to shift our style, or responses to the Port model.  Why letting a midfielder keep racking them up against us, why not changing our midfield strategy or mix until after half time, why not changing the kick in or Exit strategy when all they are going to do is smash max, knock the ball 10 clear and have players in the zone to rapidly belt it back.

10-0 clearances in the last, about 10 minutes in their forward half in a row, zero effective exits. Reliance on the same old champs to rise and keep us in it.

One quarter of football our way and we almost Pinched it.

lots of lessons, mainly for Goody and the team.  Gotta be better under the pump of a charging pressure team.

You arnt suggesting they might beat the Pies are you?

I am more concerned about Carlton...they have a chance there because like Goodwin their coach was a good player on game day but can't coach on game day.

Pies and Cats are just losses to chalk up

That was nearly us last night. Our system is such that we held up well enough defensively despite the ball living in our back half, and whilst they missed some shots, 8 of their behinds were from 45+ metres out. They were taking low-ish percentage shots.

I don’t disagree with your sentiment, but the 4 point score line was flattering in the end. Port should have sewn that game up in the first half if it wasn’t for poor kicking in front. They did nail some 50+ set shots, so maybe it evens out.

Other than here on Demonland, have you seen any coverage of our game which suggests that the scoreline flattered us? Or that we've been found out, or that we're no good or that we can't win the flag?

I haven't.

As I argued in the post you quoted, I believe too many Demonlanders have unreasonably high expectations and treat losses like evidence that we're fatally flawed.

Craig McRae regularly talks about needing to play the minutes to beat the Pies. Port had to play the minutes to beat us. Despite bringing elite pressure all game and having Butters play his career best game, they were an errant Fritsch snap away from losing to us.

Think back to 2018 and 2020 when we would dominate stats but fail to capitalise on the scoreboard, and lose games as a result. Demonland back then treated that as failure. Now, we're being beaten in stats but finding ways to either win or keep the game close, and Demonland treats that as failure too.

Thank you Titan. Teams have to play out of their skin to beat us and guess what…we will lose sometimes. That’s the game.

The game is never sewn up against us in the first half though. Port was never going to sustain that effort for 4 quarters whether they built a lead or not. We had our chance to beat Brisbane needing one too many perfect passages in the dying minutes, and we would've had our chances to beat Port, had they got a big lead with better accuracy. How come Collingwood is the only team that is "always in it" even down by 5-6 goals? Are their close wins flattering?

All credit to Port for their 4th quarter. But I don't think anything changes had they kicked straight in the first half. Our run would've just been delayed and we would\ve been fighting against Port AND the time clock. That game was always going to finish a 4 point margin. We could've played better and Port could've played worse. You win some, you lose some. Adelaide Oval is always a hard place to get the win 🤷‍♀️

Not sure if others saw First Crack, but David King made a big deal about our players lack of “Flying the flag” for Max given the way Port targeted him. Basically said Max was “left on an island” and no one came to help him. Wrapped it up by saying he was really disappointed and not something we would have done in 2021.

I was yelling at the tv on Friday about exactly this. It’s another reason Friday was so disappointing

Based on the TV coverage this is what we saw. Would be keen to hear from someone at the ground though - did no one stand up for him, or did we just not see it on TV?

Not hardly even seen it at any game attended. 

I don't get it...seriously.  

 

On reflection, with Sparrow out Harmes should have come straight in to play the same role (or ideally tag Butters) but instead we had Brayshaw spend more time in the middle which he simply is no longer up for.

This also meant that the backline structure changed out with Brayshaw out of there as well.

Similar to playing Petty forward, we upset the backline structure to play him there while Ben Brown languishes at Casey and poor Disco got monstered by Casboult.

I can't help but feel the coaches are getting too cute with team selections and it is throwing the balance off at times.

Simply put… for the love of our club.

We have one DA member who was suffering a thyroid issue. At one point last year she was terribly ill for a few weeks but never missed a game. Her sons had to almost carry her to her seat. Naturally ppl asked her why she didn’t watch the match from the comfort of her home on TV. She said that while her physical health was very poor, her mental health would’ve plummeted had she quit going to our matches. This applies to many of us.

BTW, I’m not complaining about what happened on Friday night, nor am I expecting sympathy. I just needed to share with Dees people ‘s all.

This happened last Saturday night while I was looking at the timetable at a bus stop in Adelaide since I needed to get to the airport to come home. An old bloke sitting on a bench behind me says, “Did you win?” I said “No.” He said “Who did you play, the bulldogs?” (Mind you he was wearing a Port scarf and jacket.) I said “We played your team.” He said “No ya didn’t ya dimwit. WE played Melbourne!” I said “Yeah, and we lost.” He says “But who did you play, dopey?” At this point I spun around and said “We played PORT ADELAIDE!!!” He realised then that I was a Melbourne supporter. (From the back he could see my red and navy jacket and the yellow hertz logo on the arm so in the dark he thought I was in Crows colours.) He said “Oh, I thought you were Crows. I do beg your pardon. I’m terribly sorry.” I said “Now you can apologise for calling me dopey and dimwit and generally being rude to me!” And he did. 😁 Then I said “And while you’re at it, you can apologise for all this rain and for shops shutting at 5pm on a Saturday!” Again, he did. 😆 He was a lovely old gentleman but clearly his hate for the Crows turned him into a grumpy old curmudgeon. I clearly frightened the nastiness out of him. Nobody else at the bus stop (mainly in Port colours) said a word. I think they learned from the old guy’s experience. 😁
