I'd bring Schache to play a defensive role on Alir.

He did successfully when he completely took him out of the game back in the 2021 finals series.

Huge blow this one as he is without doubt a crucial player in our structure

Big blow this and even bigger dilemma, who comes in for Petty. TMac and BBB no longer seem to have the mobility, Schache seemed to just get moved too easily out of the way. Perhaps it's time to give Smith an opportunity or maybe Melksham back as defensive forward, we seem to play better at times with a more mobile forward line. Max mainly forward, he'll get shots at goal but needs to kick straight. Time for selectors to get creative.

Dunno what people are freaking out over, petty was never going to be fwd come finals and it seems he is surplus down back based on how Goodwin has played him this year. Surely it’s better to get Ben Brown in form as he will be needed if we are going to push deep this year

Well Salem will be back in the side the following week despite what people may think.

The side is getting awfully crowded full of talent these days.

The final side for September is anyone's guess.

Goody spoke VERY positively about Harry as a forward tonight on 360. I think the club knows where they want him - forward of the ball.

I would give Smith a go. His upside is huge. We need to tap into this, or at least, give it a go. He's the sort of player that can bob up and kick 3-4. Plays tall and small. Versatile too if we need him to go back.

Got to be BBB HOWEVER ....... I would be verrry tempted to throw Joel Smith in!🤩 Please dont go with The Robotic turning circle!

What are people still seeing in this guy? I honestly dont get it.

I don't rate Joel Smith, but the FD clearly want to give him another go and Smith's athleticism is what we need at ground level. BB and TMac can't cover the ground or win the ball at ground level, so if either play the game this week, they'll struggle in this area.

Before he was injured Brown had 9 goals in 2.5 games. If he’s fit we could bring him in and make McDonald or D Turner sub for extra defensive cover. JVR can play Petty’s role leaving BBB as the deepest forward.

There is also Schacke and Smith who offer different dynamics. To make lemonade from lemons, this will at least show us alternative forward setups and how well they work.

If Petty being injured for a month derails our flag hopes…they didn’t exist to begin with.

From what I can source - now in his 8th year, Smith has played 28 MFC games for 1 goal and around 27 Casey games for 15 goals (inc. 2 'bags' of 2 and 1 'haul' of 3 - the only times he's kicked multiple goals). A very long bow to think he could do what I've highlighted in your post.

Premiership FF. Kicked 9 goals in the first 3 games. Seems a logical choice to me.

Think he meant Smith and I tend to agree. The only thing more surprising to me than Smith still being on the senior list is people thinking he can play key forward.

TMac will come in and if not him, Brown.

Maybe, but I think the quicker ball movement and current game plan would suit him well, particularly where we share goal kicking around rather than having one or two focal points

Please not Melks, Alir will carve us up on defensive rebound. With Smith I have not seen enough to know his forward 50 defensive pressure? Last time he was in defense I don’t think it went well IIRC. I do like the idea of speed.

My take is Jordan for Sparrow and Laurie in, Hames as sub. Laurie is showing signs i think now is the time to step up. Defensive forward pressure is required. I appreciate what BBB and Tmac have done for the club but truly believe we will get torched out of defense by Port Adelaide if we don’t have speed. Also Gawn and Grundy have been playing in the same half and it has looked great.

Left field idea, how about Rivers as a forward doing the Petty role and takes Alir. No Dixon helps us. I think Rivers is becoming a beautiful utility player.

We need to have another look at Oscar in the mid term draft, he was playing well at Carlton forward before he got injured.

So much sheer luck involved in winning a flag. This isn't necessarily going to stop us but it's a significant dent to our chances if we're honest He's a forward we robbed our backline for and played his best game last Sat. Now this. Jvr is still developing and we have been exposed up forward big time. Not great to say the least. Really it's up to Tmac and Bbb now. Maybe Smith.  Hmmmm.

Ps it's a good thing we fought for Jvr.

Edited by leave it to deever

Our flag hopes have been challenged by the loss of 2 key fwds in Tmac and bbb. So we use Petty as a successful alternative.  Now he's gone. Make that 3 key fwd options down.  It makes it harder. But maybe depending on Tmac and Bbb was the mistake in the first place or at least a big risk.

There must be something strange in the water at Point Lonsdale.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

  • POSTGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
