Out: Sparrow, Spargo, Tomlinson

In: Harmes, Laurie, Schache

Laurie has had 2 very big games in a row. Deserves his chance. He and Harmes should replace Spargo and Sparrow. Not sure how Schache gets in (assuming they pick BB), unless its for van R. McDonald will get another chance. Another one.

They better come out breathing fire.

With all the talent on our list I couldn’t stomach another lukewarm performance .

We’ve seen two in 5 games so far where we weren’t switched on from the start and it really cost us.

Not sure that we're as talented as people assume. Take out Gawn Oliver and Petracca - great players - and we're nothing special. And clearly lack reliable forward firepower, apart from Fritsch. Can't see where its going to come from.

I think you forgot May, Lever, Grundy, Viney, Langdon to name a few more

I like the idea of Schache playing. He can play in defence, the ruck and has great upside in the forward line. What worries me is he is great on paper, but has yet to put his potential at AFL level on a consistent level. TMac was given a game on the back of 2 goals, Schache has kicked 4 goals today at Casey. Was he given a real opportunity at the Bullies given he was behind some good forwards?

Everything we dislike about BBB, not a contested aerialist, not good at ground level (although has kicked many this year), too easily out muscled, is exactly what is said about Schache. BBB kicks goals and I can’t argue with that.

Schache would have been handy given how we were outplayed by the bombers. He could have been the swing man we needed to stem the play. Can BBB, Schache and JVR play in the same forward line with Schache being the 2nd ruck/swing man. TMac should be dropped and  Gawn is too important to risk at this stage.

Shache is icing not the cake. His games at Casey have varied between okay and good. By comparison he didn't dominate like TMac did in the VFL game that earned him a recall. He couldn't hold down a place in the bulldogs team and was upset when JUH got a run of games at his expense.

Play him if you will but I'm not sure you'll get more than you would get from TMac on a normal day. VFL is a long way off AFL standard.

I'll leave this one to the selectors but I do agree that Gawn should not be rushed back which is something Goodwin might have done in the past

Brown for McDonald
Gawn or Schache for Melksham
Lever for Tomlinson

Petty to settle down back for the week

Mid/forward changes. I’d start with JJ in for Spargo. If Sparrow misses then Laurie too.

Schache has kicked almost 40 goals in his last 10 games at VFL level. He provides better value as a second ruck than TMac or JVR. He is performing at VFL and he  has not been the icing on top of the cake in these games. I have my doubts too, but I would like him to get a good run at it to prove his worth when TMac is struggling.

My new changes is drop all the players gladly sipping champagne on the news. Gather round sell outs can stay in Adelaide permanently.

Edit: or course, can’t be champagne, sparkling Murray tap water

After losing to Essendon. I will not take any game for granted.  We should turn up with same intensity for Richmond and Norf as we do for Sydney and other top teams. Schache in and Laurie.  Reward them.  Sparrow was supposed to be our next big thing and has drifted off.

This game has really knocked us down a peg or two. If we lose to Richmond, we could be out of the 8 going into round 7….

Gawny is not needed till the North game on Sat 29th. Debauched not very observant only 5 days between AnzEve and Round7.

But he also forgets that we have a 9 day break also. Let's be consistent Deb?

We have to be very careful with our selections during the 5 day period after the Tigs game.

If Max plays the Anzac Eve game surely He, Maysie etc are managed accordingly.

Richmond is in the bottom 4 for a reason.

They're not very good at full strength, let alone with a number of their better players out.

Sydney didn't have a backline against them and won by 8 goals.

Even if Gawn, Lever, Brown, Hibberd, Salem, Spargo and Sparrow are all injured and forced out of our side, we should have no business losing to Richmond. Not after a disappointing loss that should be spurring us to get real.

The extreme range of opinions on possible ins and outs reflects the early-season inconsistency of quite a few players, including some big names. But one thing for certain is that we cannot risk Max next week unless he is 100 percent ready to go. One other point I would make is that although Harmes is far from our most polished performer, we missed his hard-running pressure game when the Bombers took control in the second half.

We must not play Gawn.

Our opponent doesn't have two rucks like Essendon did. They don't even have one.

We have a second game five days after ANZAC Eve. It's not the right time to bring Gawn back.

If he's even fit for ANZAC Eve, hold him, and bring him back the following week against North.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
