Liked McVee - played well but most importantly played his role in a system that was under pressure.

Laurie I'm happy to wait and see.

Baker I have no particular feelings about except that we clearly haven't made any big error letting him go.

Similar note - I'm sure everyone is happy for Sam Weideman. I don't think there was ever any doubt about his 'sincerity' as a demon and footballer, it just didn't come together for him and sometimes you just have to change the scene. Happy to see him kick 40 for the season and still wouldn't feel hard done by.

But I just can't bring myself to feel stressed about our depth when we've got Jefferson, Adams, Turner, Woewodin, and Van Rooyen and a few others all brewing from just the last two drafts.

McVee when he got done for HTB.

One of the very few poor umpiring decisions I can recall from the game, which is a good sign.

The other that sticks in my craw is Petty not being paid for that lingering high tackle that was inflicted on him.

Petty initially ducked which caused Naughton's arm to go over the shoulder. It was the correct call even though the lingering nature made it look unusual

I thought he got tackled while still down picking the ball up.

My read was that Petty got tackled high while picking the ball up, then did a head duck motion to accentuate it, which the umpire saw as his prior opportunity. He would have got out with a free kick his way if he didn't overdo the contact.

How do we react if he kicks a goal?

He kicked a goal. I was happy for him and Hannam to get a chance with the Bullsogs.

i'm still not convinced on laurie, the eye test, he is yet to pass it. will go straight out this week to make room for our 4 ins, and i wouldn't even give him the vest. given a game purely to see if it sparks something playing on this stage compared ot vfl as it does for some players but in 3 years has rarely knocked on the door. also needed to give a few debuts so we had some sub options throughout the season of which laurie may now feature heavily but long term ANB and spargo are so far in front and it concerns me a little given where he was drafted

Just like to take this opportunity to let the armchair experts who canned Baker during Demonland debates know they were wrong.

About a quarter of posters felt he should be given more games but the majority whined about his disposal among other things.

Picked in the first 5 games & playing ok demonstrates he should have been given a go in 2022 (along with several others).

Given a go ahead of who?

Who would he currently be getting a game ahead of at Melbourne? We can’t even fit half the promising kids who are dominating at Casey.

Good for him. Wish him the best.

I won't comment about other posters opinions of Oskar's on here (mainly because I don't care that much). But in terms of your last statement, I think you're assuming a bit too much.

I saw a few Casey games in person last year where Oskar performed well. He certainly took the next step in his development and was fairly consistent from what I saw and the reports all year. The one thing I did notice often was his running/tank potentially wasn't up to standard. With wing being his best and most suited role that would be an issue but who knows if there were other reasons he wasn't selected for starting 22 last year. Also, unfortunately, there were others the coaching department preferred playing his wing/flank role they preferred. JJ, Brayshaw, Sparrow and the likes were and are just more complete players at this stage I think.

Baker was actually de-listed after the trade period ended. Clearly, the acquisition of Hunter who would be considered one of the better and proven wings in the league played a part. Also with JJ and the others already mentioned it would seem Oskar might have had go even further down the pecking order and there just wasn't room for him with new players and draftees coming in.

I'm glad he's getting his opportunity at the dogs and hope he can continue to play well. But I just don't see him playing in our best 22 this year with the amount of depth we have.

I watched quite a few Casey games last season and it was very clear to me that although his running was good, he has a turn of pace and he got a decent amount of the ball, his kicking wasn't up to AFL standard. He continued to butcher it all season. Our collective kicking skills have improved so much IMO he wasn't up to making our first team.  I have to admit the little I've seen of him this year he seems to have considerably improved but there's too many ahead of him now. Jordan is a better player and deserves to be consistently playing but I fear we might lose him because there are too many ahead of him for the roles he plays for us.

Appreciate the sentiment, and I liked, and still like, Oskar as a player

However, the key issue is Depth

We have genuine depth on our list in the last few years - it means guys will miss out

Unfortunately Oskar didn’t cut it ahead of Langdon/Brayshaw on Wing, or many other running HFF or HBF that could cycle through the wings

I'm glad we have depth, as much as it means good players will miss out and leave...

Haha come off it.

Couldn't get a game for 2 years and would be kicking the dew out at Casey had he remain on the list.

Tell me exactly who is getting a game in our current line up?

Only getting a game at the doggies because Bevo was stupid enough to get rid of Hunter without no direct replacement.

Here we go. Who is getting dropped?

Same for the Jordon lovers now; who is getting dropped?

Some of you just don’t know how to follow a good team.

Struggled with the contest, looked like he picked that aspect up a bit last year but in the end it was better for him to move on. Even though he was moved on.

Like Hannan, in the end was only depth and was pretty deep down the pecking order.

Seems like a decent kid, so...good luck to him, he's played more AFL games than me and probably anyone else on here.

Good on you for having a go, Cranky. Nevermind that this bump is one of the more dopey bumps in modern Demonland history.

l like Oscar as he seems like a passionate guy with an air of self confidence ... hope he makes it ... at the same time can we change this thread to 'McVee & Laurie'

In lieu of?

McVee has been the highlight of the season for me so far. Came from nowhere and he has been amazing, excellent ball use and game awareness.

You totally missed the point. Which was that Baker was good enough to play AFL in 2022 and if the selectors had rested injured & non performing players & given Baker, Dunstan, Chandler, Bedford & others some well deserved games then maybe we would have done better in 2022.

  • 4 months later...

I think the player really missing out of this conversation is Toby Bedford.  I know hindsight is a great thing, but I always saw him as a talent with abbilty that was close to cracking it and I'm sure would be getting a game this season with us.

Conversely, while he's racked up some big stats and maybe even some great games at Casey, I've yet to see Laurie look like making much of an impact at AFL level.  Doubt he'll get picked again this year, so I think it will need to be a big off season for him this year and him needing to reinvent himself to find himself a role in the side.  If he doesn't, I think he'll suffer the same fate as Baker.

In retrospect, I'm actually quite frustrated that Laurie was picked to be the sub last week, as even any of Grundy or Tomlinson or even Schache would have given us a whole lot more output than what Laurie did and if neither are selected in the main team, I hope they are at least sub over Laurie.  I think it's pretty much a given Bradshaw will be replaced by Jordan this week as I think we can be pretty confident he'll give a solid/reliable performance even if his best is not as outstanding as some of his peers that have kept him out of the side.

Nothing against Laurie personally, it's just my observations of him over the past season when he's been given game time.

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
